MAY
It was a king sized bed so there was enough space for both of us. We stayed further apart and I turned to peek at him at times. The thought of him touching me while I was asleep almost made me run wild. Well, he didn't look like one to do such a thing anyway. Even at that, I couldn't get any sleep. I struggled between nightmares until it was morning. Nicholas was up first. He was coming out of the bathroom when I woke up. “Good morning, sweetie!” He told me as he hung his wet towel. “Good morning…” I muttered. “I'm not your sweetie though!” “Get used to it. We will have a lot of guests today,” Nicholas smiled. At that point, I thought he was just goofing around. It was shocking to find out that I really had so many guests. Many people wanted to see Nicholas so he strategically threw a party that same day so he could introduce me to the world. “You are so pretty!” That must have been the hundredth time I was hearing it today. Nicholas had guests from home and abroad and some of them had gifts for me. One of them in particular, an Asian lady left an impression on me. “Everyone calls me Madam Kang! You can do that as well,” She told me confidently as she raised her glass. I clinked glasses with her and smiled politely. “You are from South Korea, right?” I asked, trying to initiate a conversation. “Right! I lived part of my life there and the rest in France. I am fluent in six languages including French, English, Chinese, and Korean. What do you think?” She smiled. I felt like telling her she talked too much. I asked a question, she gave too much information. Now, why was she asking what I thought of it? “It is wonderful. To be fluent in so many languages is rare,” I muttered. I had to appease her ego. “Everyone says that too!” She blushed. “I am pretty successful, you know. I co-own one of the best fashion brands in Asia and Europe. The brand is growing pretty well in America so you'd get to know us soon enough.” “Oh, is that so?” I cut in. “Yeah, we are growing pretty well,” She replied. One more “pretty” from her and I'd growl in annoyance. It was a nice thing that this beast-like frustration of mine was concealed within. “How did you start your business?” I really didn't want to know. It was just something to keep the conversation going. She turned to me and looked pretty serious as she would say. “I had similar opportunities like you!” She replied without beating around the bush. “I'm not sure I understood that…” My voice trailed off. “My ex-husband is Roberts Greene,” She began to narrate. “He was a multimillionaire then. I married him for my career actually and well, he funded it pretty well. He was the building block of my fashion company. Man, he loved me pretty much!” “What happened?” I asked. “What else would happen?” Madam Kang laughed. “Of course, I got a divorce and left with the majority of his fortune. I heard he became depressed and wrapped up his business.” “That's sad,” I meant that. Madam Kang tapped me and made me look into her eyes. Her gaze seemed dangerous but I didn't look away. “Don't feel pity for men!” She told me. “You have a billionaire and famous husband which means you will have access to more than I did. You are pregnant too, is that correct?” I nodded. “Very good!” She smiled. “That means your child will inherit whatever fortune you didn't get from him originally. You have better luck. All you have to do is be ruthless.” What in the world was this woman proposing? I couldn't wrap my head around it. “Ruthless?” I asked. “Don't you want to become a billionaire too?” She asked me fondly. “I am sure you are a wise lady. Be ruthless and calculative. I will be rooting for you!” Madam Kang left me high and dry. I wondered if what she meant was that I should rob Nicholas of his fortune the way she did with her husband. Would Nicholas even allow me to do that? Impossible. It was a contract marriage anyway. “Sister-in-law!” I heard from behind me. I turned only to find a tall, good-looking young man behind me. He had brown hair with a funny looking moustache that made him different from the rest. One of the waitresses passed and he picked up a glass of champagne. I stared at him, dumbfounded. Was he Nicholas's brother? He must have found out I was confused because he continued, “My name is Austin. I guess my brother didn't make mention of me at all. Nice to meet you!” He offered me a handshake and I shook hands with him smiling politely as I had done all through. Out of nowhere, Nicholas appeared, pulling me towards him. I was so shocked that my glass fell, shattering into pieces. All eyes in the room must have fallen on us. Nicholas looked alarmed. He was breathing hard as he stared at Austin. I could sense the bad energy between them. Austin was so calm with a smile while Nicholas was the one who looked disgruntled. “What are you doing here?” Nicholas asked, keeping his voice down. “I had to see my new sister-in-law. Did I move out of bounds?” Austin wanted to know. A waitress came by to clear the broken glass. Austin winked at her and she only nodded. “You should leave now that you've satisfied your curiosity!” Nicholas told him, his voice sounding grumpy. He grabbed my hand firmly and led me out of the room. He didn't let me go until we were in a private room, away from everyone's ears. “Why did you do that?” I shouted at him. “You made me feel embarrassed and I'm sure your brother felt bad too!” “Stepbrother,” He corrected. “You think I would have that monster as my real brother!”NICHOLAS As I left the place, I was boiling in anger, not at May but at myself. I just got what I deserved. Why would I hold onto May who was disappointed in me? I should have never followed her in the first place. I must have been crazy. I got to the garage and Kelvin saw me. "Aren't you leaving with Miss May?" Kelvin asked me carefully."Bring her back safely," I replied. "If anything happens to her, I'm holding you responsible. Make sure she comes back to the mansion!" "Yes, boss," Kelvin responded. I got into my own car and drove off. As I drove, I had several thoughts. Several scenarios played in my mind but nothing frightened me more than May following Conan to his place after dinner. That should never happen. We were legally married. But... I was also involved with Vivian and Lydia. What if she wanted payback? The contract didn't state that she couldn't be with other men. If I could have sex with Vivian, she was also entitled to do it with Conan. This was driving me crazy
MAY I had noticed Nicholas's car behind my trail ever since I left the mansion. Kelvin also confirmed it. He had been a driver for years and he could tell when he was being followed. Nicholas's disguise to enter the restaurant was a funny one. I could tell who he was right from his figure. So when Conan began to say much, I stepped in right away. “Don’t badmouth my husband. He is right there,” I pointed to Nicholas. I could see the shock registered on Conan's face as I said this. Nicholas turned and smiled uneasily. I smiled back at him naughtily."Oh, he came with you," Conan managed to say. "Come and join us, honey. Come here," I gestured to Nicholas. He looked so nervous as he came to sit with us. Conan was the same. The waiter came over and served us. "I have heard a lot about you, Mr. Nicholas. I was going to see you in the next few weeks. I never knew I would get the opportunity just like this," Conan said slyly. Nicholas simply kept a smile on his face. "I haven't heard a
NICHOLAS “In a nutshell,” May interrupted. “You pulled strings to get Lydia the appointment.” Wait! Did I do that? When did I do such a thing? What was May saying? “No, that never happened. I never knew her name until today. How could I promote her to the housekeeper? The decision was made by Mama without my involvement,” I answered quickly. However, I could tell that May did not believe me. She must have thought I was only making excuses. Well, I would have thought the same if I were in her shoes. “Anything you say!” May laughed it off. She sat on the bed and began to take off her heels. Afterwards, she laid on the bed, laughing wickedly. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that she had a murder plan for me.“Hey, you believe me, don’t you?” I asked just to be sure. That was purely unnecessary. “Why would I believe you? Do you think I have a pumpkin instead of a brain?” She asked. I was officially fed up. I had no way to convince her anymore. Just as I decided to continue, I heard her
MAY The drive helped me calm my nerves. I did some thinking on my own and realized that I might have feelings for Nicholas. That was the only reason I would be so annoyed about Lydia. This wasn’t the plan I had when I accepted the contract marriage offer. I had to do something about it before I fell even harder. “Fall for him?” I muttered to myself. “What did you say, Miss?” Abby asked. She thought I was talking to her. “Please focus on the road, Abby,” I replied dryly. Both of us were on our way back to Nicholas’s mansion. My phone rang and I stared in shock at the familiar number. I could feel my heart beating hard as I thought about what I should do. The caller was Conan, my ex-fiance. I rejected the call uneasily. Abby remained focused on the road. I eased into my seat and sighed. I was bothered by the mere idea of Conan calling me. What was he doing that for? Did he want to apologize for cutting off our engagement just like that? Oh no! Conan would never do that. He
NICHOLAS I was unsettled. Ever since May caught me kissing Lydia, I had been worried since then. I couldn't concentrate on anything and I blamed myself. I shouldn't have done that no matter the situation. But I was more worried that May might get the wrong idea. I didn't come back to the room that night so I could give her space, it wasn't that I went back to Lydia. Vivian entered my office, holding some documents. She had a smile on her face. I stared at her as she dropped the documents on my table. "The stock prices are rising, boss. It appears your PR went well," Vivian told me calmly. She showed me her iPad and I could see that it was rising indeed. On a normal day, this would be enough to get me so excited. However, nothing of such was happening today. "Okay, I understand," I simply replied. I could see the shocked expression on Vivian's face after I said this. It was her own turn to stare at me. One would think she was scanning my face. "Boss!" I heard her call me. "I am
MAY I clenched my fists. I thought I could fake a smile but my face didn’t cooperate with my slyness. She was dressed in a different attire, one that I had never seen since I got to the mansion. The maid stepped backwards as she came forward.“My name is Lydia and I am the current housekeeper. For the next two weeks, I will take up the duties of the butler and manage the maids until Mama comes back. Nice to meet you, Miss,” She smiled at me. Just by taking one look at her, I could tell that she was an opportunist. She was smiling so confidently, not minding that she was caught with my husband last night. What an effrontery. “Whose decision is this?” I asked calmly. I was so close to having an outburst. I had to control myself but it was getting harder every moment.“It wasn’t Nicholas, don’t worry,” Lydia replied.“And how dare you call my husband by his name! Are maids supposed to do such discourtesy?” I asked angrily. I was genuinely upset.“You can leave,” Lydia told the maid be
