NICHOLAS

As big as my home was, I had no personal office. Well, the house belonged to my father before me. My late mum made sure to convince my dad not to build an office there because she wanted our home to be a place he could let go of all the worries from work. After I inherited the place, I had been tempted to create an office out of the several empty rooms but at such times, I remembered mum’s words to dad.

Therefore, I made the library my workroom. It was accessible only to a selected few to ensure not only my privacy but the confidentiality of the things I worked on there.

I was seated, deep in thought even though my eyes were fixed on my laptop. My thoughts were disrupted by the barging in of Susan. I could tell it was her just from her footsteps. I didn’t raise my head.

“I didn’t ask for you. Why are you here?” I asked calmly as ever.

“You did that purposely, didn’t you?” Susan asked weakly. She must have been crying. I raised my head to confirm that fact. Her eyes were reddish in color, proof that she had been crying indeed. However, I was not one to be gaslighted.

“What did I do on purpose? Keep it short and simple. No emotional blackmail!” I told her.

“Everything…” She replied. “I could have been in the back seat today. I could have been in May’s place. I… Do you know how I felt when you told her to call me for help whenever she was in need? It made me feel live… her slave.”

“You are not her slave!” I replied sharply. “You are an employee of mine and helping May out when she is need isn’t a favor. From now on, count it as your responsibility.”

Susan kept quiet. I glanced at her and when she didn’t respond, I continued.

“Also, let this be the last time we talk about this. You have started to overstep your bounds,” I said frankly. “Now let me know tomorrow’s schedule.”

“I will send it via mail,” Susan began to walk away.

“Stop!” I stood up and watched her turn back. “You will tell me my schedule with your mouth. That, as well, is part of your responsibility. You get paid for that.”

“Our wedding will be announced tomorrow. Susan will assist with the preparations, don’t worry,” I said enthusiastically as the food was being served. May only nodded. She didn’t seem as excited as I was.

Mama had a big smile on her wrinkly face.

“Dinner is served,” Mama said excitedly. “This evening’s selection has been curated with your condition in mind, Miss May. We shall begin with a light garden salad dressed in lemon vinaigrette. It is rich in folate and iron.”

I remained calm and watched.

“The main course is grilled wild salmon atop a bed of quinoa and sauteed spinach. As for dessert, a warm apple crumble made with almond flour and a touch of cinnamon would be served,” Mama continued. “Ah, it has no refined sugar. It is naturally sweetened.”

“How sweet you are to everyone but me!” I finally commented.

“I’ve been serving you since you were nine years old, young master. Don’t tell me you’re jealous!” Mama said jokingly.

“I am jealous,” I replied. I frowned playfully.

“Then…” Mama began to look serious. I dropped my fork and gazed at her. “How about you get pregnant, young master?”

That woman! I would have laughed so hard on normal circumstances but for some reason, I wanted to remain composed in front of May. I could see May blushing.

Mama excused us soon enough and we ate in silence. The dining room had no humans except us and when I was full, I decided it was time to talk. May was a slow eater. You know the normal picky princess, she gave off so much of that vibe.

“I’m sure you know already but our contract marriage must never be exposed to anyone. It will affect both of us if it is revealed!” I warned.

“I am aware,” May replied. She was going to talk but I watched her hesitate.

“What do you want to say?” I asked carefully.

“We are going to sleep in the same room, aren’t we?” May wanted to know. It made me blush. Well, I wasn’t surprised. Girls were always attracted to me. If May wanted me that badly, sex with her wouldn’t be bad.

“Well, we have to. That way, no one will notice,” I replied slyly.

“Then, I need you to watch your hands,” May replied.

“Yes,” I replied absentmindedly. When I realized, I ended up shouting, “What!”

“I don’t like you,” May continued. “Even though I am pregnant with your child, it changes nothing. I never slept with my boyfriend… sorry, ex-boyfriend that I dated for several years. Don’t think I will start with you.”

I sighed.

“That’s fine,” I replied as if it didn’t matter.

“I’m done,” May started to walk away. She stopped and turned back now. “If we were going to use the same room, why did you design a new room for me in the first place?”

“I didn’t. Mama did…” I replied as I stood up too. “I will walk you to my room.”

“Our room,” May corrected.

I led her into the room and she looked around. May didn’t know this but she was the first woman I brought into this room. Of course, Mama and a few maids had been here for cleaning up but she was the first woman I brought by myself. Not even Susan had entered.

“I thought we had nothing in common. However, it seems we both like Winchester. You have his paintings everywhere,” May said, admiring the paintings on my wall.

“Oh, it was painted by Winchester?” I gushed.

“Didn’t you know?” May asked curiously. She had piercing eyes and it felt as if she could see through me.

“Well,” I said nervously. “I randomly picked the paintings. I don’t know Winchester. I’m not that interested in art actually.”

“Then we have nothing in common!” May said firmly and turned away from me.

That weird feeling in me began to erupt. I felt as if I just got rejected.

NICHOLAS As I left the place, I was boiling in anger, not at May but at myself. I just got what I deserved. Why would I hold onto May who was disappointed in me? I should have never followed her in the first place. I must have been crazy. I got to the garage and Kelvin saw me. "Aren't you leaving with Miss May?" Kelvin asked me carefully."Bring her back safely," I replied. "If anything happens to her, I'm holding you responsible. Make sure she comes back to the mansion!" "Yes, boss," Kelvin responded. I got into my own car and drove off. As I drove, I had several thoughts. Several scenarios played in my mind but nothing frightened me more than May following Conan to his place after dinner. That should never happen. We were legally married. But... I was also involved with Vivian and Lydia. What if she wanted payback? The contract didn't state that she couldn't be with other men. If I could have sex with Vivian, she was also entitled to do it with Conan. This was driving me crazy

MAY I had noticed Nicholas's car behind my trail ever since I left the mansion. Kelvin also confirmed it. He had been a driver for years and he could tell when he was being followed. Nicholas's disguise to enter the restaurant was a funny one. I could tell who he was right from his figure. So when Conan began to say much, I stepped in right away. “Don’t badmouth my husband. He is right there,” I pointed to Nicholas. I could see the shock registered on Conan's face as I said this. Nicholas turned and smiled uneasily. I smiled back at him naughtily."Oh, he came with you," Conan managed to say. "Come and join us, honey. Come here," I gestured to Nicholas. He looked so nervous as he came to sit with us. Conan was the same. The waiter came over and served us. "I have heard a lot about you, Mr. Nicholas. I was going to see you in the next few weeks. I never knew I would get the opportunity just like this," Conan said slyly. Nicholas simply kept a smile on his face. "I haven't heard a

NICHOLAS “In a nutshell,” May interrupted. “You pulled strings to get Lydia the appointment.” Wait! Did I do that? When did I do such a thing? What was May saying? “No, that never happened. I never knew her name until today. How could I promote her to the housekeeper? The decision was made by Mama without my involvement,” I answered quickly. However, I could tell that May did not believe me. She must have thought I was only making excuses. Well, I would have thought the same if I were in her shoes. “Anything you say!” May laughed it off. She sat on the bed and began to take off her heels. Afterwards, she laid on the bed, laughing wickedly. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that she had a murder plan for me.“Hey, you believe me, don’t you?” I asked just to be sure. That was purely unnecessary. “Why would I believe you? Do you think I have a pumpkin instead of a brain?” She asked. I was officially fed up. I had no way to convince her anymore. Just as I decided to continue, I heard her

MAY The drive helped me calm my nerves. I did some thinking on my own and realized that I might have feelings for Nicholas. That was the only reason I would be so annoyed about Lydia. This wasn’t the plan I had when I accepted the contract marriage offer. I had to do something about it before I fell even harder. “Fall for him?” I muttered to myself. “What did you say, Miss?” Abby asked. She thought I was talking to her. “Please focus on the road, Abby,” I replied dryly. Both of us were on our way back to Nicholas’s mansion. My phone rang and I stared in shock at the familiar number. I could feel my heart beating hard as I thought about what I should do. The caller was Conan, my ex-fiance. I rejected the call uneasily. Abby remained focused on the road. I eased into my seat and sighed. I was bothered by the mere idea of Conan calling me. What was he doing that for? Did he want to apologize for cutting off our engagement just like that? Oh no! Conan would never do that. He

NICHOLAS I was unsettled. Ever since May caught me kissing Lydia, I had been worried since then. I couldn't concentrate on anything and I blamed myself. I shouldn't have done that no matter the situation. But I was more worried that May might get the wrong idea. I didn't come back to the room that night so I could give her space, it wasn't that I went back to Lydia. Vivian entered my office, holding some documents. She had a smile on her face. I stared at her as she dropped the documents on my table. "The stock prices are rising, boss. It appears your PR went well," Vivian told me calmly. She showed me her iPad and I could see that it was rising indeed. On a normal day, this would be enough to get me so excited. However, nothing of such was happening today. "Okay, I understand," I simply replied. I could see the shocked expression on Vivian's face after I said this. It was her own turn to stare at me. One would think she was scanning my face. "Boss!" I heard her call me. "I am

MAY I clenched my fists. I thought I could fake a smile but my face didn’t cooperate with my slyness. She was dressed in a different attire, one that I had never seen since I got to the mansion. The maid stepped backwards as she came forward.“My name is Lydia and I am the current housekeeper. For the next two weeks, I will take up the duties of the butler and manage the maids until Mama comes back. Nice to meet you, Miss,” She smiled at me. Just by taking one look at her, I could tell that she was an opportunist. She was smiling so confidently, not minding that she was caught with my husband last night. What an effrontery. “Whose decision is this?” I asked calmly. I was so close to having an outburst. I had to control myself but it was getting harder every moment.“It wasn’t Nicholas, don’t worry,” Lydia replied.“And how dare you call my husband by his name! Are maids supposed to do such discourtesy?” I asked angrily. I was genuinely upset.“You can leave,” Lydia told the maid be
