Emily's POV

A scream tore out of my throat before I could stop it.

I scrambled backward, yanking the blanket up to my chin so hard I nearly fell off the edge of the mattress. My heart hammered wildly. “Oh my God… oh my God…”

Alex stirred, annoyed. He cracked one gray eye open, then the other. No panic. No surprise. Just mild irritation, like I had interrupted his sleep. He pushed himself up on one elbow, the sheet slipping down to reveal his sculpted chest and abs. He ran a hand through his messy hair and let out a long sigh.

“Relax,” he said, voice rough with sleep. “It’s just sex. We were both drunk. No need to act like the world ended.”

His words landed like a slap. I clutched the blanket tighter, tears already burning my eyes. “Just sex? Alex, I… we…” My voice cracked. “I was a virgin.”

He shrugged one shoulder, completely unbothered. “Well, you’re not anymore.” He reached for his phone on the nightstand and checked the time. “It’s almost nine. I have practice at ten-thirty.”

I stared at him, disbelief mixing with the shame churning in my stomach. This was the guy my brother trusted most. The hockey captain everyone wanted. And right now he looked at me like I was just another Saturday morning complication.

“Julian,” I whispered, horror creeping into my voice. “If he finds out… Alex, he’s your best friend. He’ll kill you. He’ll kill both of us.”

Alex leaned back against the headboard, still shirtless, scrolling through his phone like we were discussing the weather. “Yeah, he’d be pissed. So keep your mouth shut.” He glanced at me briefly. “You’re not going to tell him, right?”

I shook my head quickly, too stunned to speak. My hands trembled as I tried to keep the blanket wrapped around me. Every inch of my body ached with reminders of last night. Flashes kept coming — my fingers digging into his back, his low voice in my ear, the way I had cried his name like he could fix everything Lucas broke.

I felt sick.

Alex swung his legs off the bed and stood up in nothing but black boxer briefs. He walked to the dresser like he did this every weekend. He grabbed a bottle of water and some painkillers, then tossed them onto the bed near me.

“Here. For the headache.” His tone was casual, almost bored. He didn’t ask how I felt. He didn’t say sorry. He just threw a clean t-shirt and sweatpants in my direction. “Put those on. Your dress is… somewhere.”

I caught the clothes with shaking hands. The shirt smelled like him. That same scent from last night that had made me feel safe for a few stupid hours. Now it made me want to cry.

While I struggled to get dressed under the blanket, more memories flooded back. The desperate way I had kissed him in that dark corner. How I had whispered, “Make me forget him.” The way his hands had felt on my skin. How I had clung to him like he was my only lifeline.

And now he couldn’t even look at me properly.

I finally managed to pull his oversized t-shirt over my head. It reached mid-thigh. The sweatpants were way too big, but I tied the string tight. When I looked up, Alex was already in jeans, pulling a hoodie over his head. He checked his phone again.

“Practice,” he muttered to himself, then glanced at me. “You good to leave? I can call you a cab.”

That was it. No “are you okay?” No “last night was a mistake but I’m here if you need to talk.” Just… a cab.

Tears spilled down my cheeks before I could stop them. “I can’t believe I did this,” I whispered. “I ruined everything. Lucas, Julian, my own life… all in one night.”

Alex paused near the door. For a second I thought he might say something kind. Instead he exhaled through his nose, looking slightly impatient.

“Look, Emily. We were drunk. You were hurting. Shit happens.” He shrugged again. “Don’t overthink it. It was one night. Move on.”

His cold words cut deeper than anything. I felt cheap. Used. Like I was just another girl on his long list. The quiet painter girl who threw herself at the campus playboy and got exactly what she deserved.

My phone started ringing on the nightstand. The sound made me jump. I grabbed it with trembling fingers.

Julian’s name flashed on the screen.

“Oh no…” I whispered.

Alex looked over, his expression hardening. He crossed his arms over his chest. “Handle your brother. And don’t make this weird.”

I stared at the ringing phone, my stomach twisting into knots. Julian’s cheerful voice would be on the other end, completely clueless that I had spent the night in his best friend’s bed. Completely clueless that I had given my virginity to the one person he would never expect.

I let the call go to voicemail. I couldn’t speak to him right now. Not while I was still wrapped in Alex’s clothes, still smelling like him, still feeling the evidence of last night on my body.

Alex watched me silently for a moment. No sympathy in those gray eyes. Just that same detached look.

“I have to head out soon,” he said, grabbing his hockey bag. “Lock the door when you leave.”

He paused at the bedroom door, then added without turning around, “And Emily? Don’t catch feelings. I don’t do that.”

The door clicked shut behind him.

I sat there alone in his big, empty bed, wearing his clothes, tears streaming down my face. The reality of what I had done crashed over me like a wave. I had lost my virginity in a drunken haze to my brother’s best friend. A guy who didn’t even care enough to pretend he felt bad about it.

My phone buzzed again. A text from Julian.

Julian: Hey sis, heard you got pretty wasted last night. You okay? Want me to bring breakfast?

Emily's POVA month later My stomach twisted the entire walk from the parking lot to the restaurant. Julian walked beside me with his usual easy stride, one arm slung around my shoulders like old times. He had been so excited when he picked me up, talking nonstop about how the team had “big news” and that I needed to get out more after that rough night at the club.“You’ve been hiding in your dorm too much, Em,” he said, giving my shoulder a gentle squeeze. “This will be good for you. The guys miss seeing you around.”I forced a small smile and nodded, but my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. I shoved them into the pockets of my oversized cardigan, hoping he wouldn’t notice. Every step closer to the restaurant door made my heart beat faster. I kept replaying that morning in Alex’s apartment — his cold sigh, the way he barely looked at me, the casual way he told me not to make it weird. Now I had to sit in the same room with him and pretend none of it ever happened. The restaurant was

Emily's POVI left Alex’s apartment still wearing his clothes while my brother kept texting me, completely unaware I had just slept with the guy he warned me about the most. The morning chill wrapped around me as I gently closed the door to Alex’s apartment. I moved like a shadow, careful not to make any noise. His gray t-shirt hung loosely on my frame, reaching mid-thigh, while the sweatpants I’d rolled at the waist kept threatening to slip down. My own black dress and heels were stuffed into a cheap plastic bag I’d found under his sink. I felt ridiculous, exposed, and utterly humiliated.I practically ran down the stairs and ordered a cab outside his building. The moment I sank into the backseat, my phone exploded with notifications.Julian: Em, Kara told me you got really drunk and disappeared. Where are you? Julian: I’m getting worried. Reply or I’m coming to your dorm. Julian: You better be okay, sis.I swallowed hard and turned my phone face down. Kara had obviously fill

Emily’s POV Alex was carrying me through the pulsing club lights like I weighed nothing. One strong arm wrapped under my knees, the other supporting my back. My cheek pressed against his bare chest, still warm from where I’d collapsed into him moments ago. The bass vibrated through his body into mine as he moved through the crowd. “You’re really drunk, Emily,” he muttered, voice low near my ear. “This is a fucking mess.”I tightened my arms around his neck, clinging harder. “Alex…” I whispered, my lips brushing his collarbone. My voice came out soft and broken. “Make me forget him. Please… touch me like you mean it.”He stopped walking for a second, right at the edge of the dance floor. I felt his chest rise sharply under my cheek. His grip on me tightened.“Emily,” he said, warning clear in his tone. “You don’t know what you’re asking. Julian’s my best friend. You’re his little sister. This is crossing every line.”I lifted my head slowly, meeting those stormy gray eyes. The club

Emily’s POVMy legs felt loose and heavy at the same time as I stumbled back toward the bar. The music pulsed louder in my ears, each beat slamming against my skull. Kara’s warning from moments ago still rang in my head, but I pushed it away. “Another one,” I told the bartender, slapping my hand on the sticky counter. Kara appeared beside me instantly, grabbing my elbow. “Emily, stop. You’ve had way too much already. You’re going to regret this so badly tomorrow.”“I need it,” I mumbled, grabbing the fresh cocktail. The glass felt slippery in my fingers. “Everything still hurts, Kara. Every time I close my eyes I see him kissing her. I just want it to stop. Her face softened with worry, but her grip stayed firm. “This isn’t the way. You’re not yourself right now.”I took a long gulp anyway. The sweet liquid slid down easily, but my stomach twisted in protest. The club lights blurred into streaks of blue and red. My head felt too heavy for my neck.Kara exhaled sharply, running a h

Emily’s POVMy body moved on its own, hips swaying harder than I ever had before, arms raised like I could push the pain out through my fingertips. The bass thumped inside my chest, matching the angry beat of my pulse. Sweat clung to my skin. The black dress rode up my thighs with every sharp turn, but I didn’t care. “Emily, slow down!” Kara shouted over the music, grabbing my wrist. Her curls were sticking to her forehead, eyes wide with worry. “You’re going to fall if you keep spinning like that.”I laughed, but it sounded wild even to my own ears. “I’m fine! This feels good.” It didn’t feel good. It felt like fire in my veins and ice in my stomach at the same time. Every time the lights flashed across my face, I saw him again, Lucas’s hands on her waist, their mouths locked together like they couldn’t breathe without each other. The image wouldn’t leave me alone.I pulled away from Kara and danced harder, throwing my head back, letting my hair whip around. The alcohol made ever
