There was a sudden pause on the other end of the call, followed by joy.

"Zoe, you finally agreed!"

Then her voice shifted from excitement to concern.

"Zoe, why did you finally agree to my request? Last time, you said you'd never consider it. Tell me the truth. Did your father treat you badly again? Was it so bad that you had no choice but to leave??"

"I knew he wasn't a reliable father. I insisted on taking you with me when we severed our bond. But he strongly refused. He promised he'd take good care of you and Alex."

"And now? Is this what he promised? Zoe, tell me what you've been through in that den. I'll stand up for you!"

Yes, I was the only female pup in our den, so my mom cared about me the most when she severed her bond with my dad.

She wanted to take me with her, and she begged me to go.

But my dad wouldn't let me go. He held me tightly and promised he would take good care of me.

Even Alex cried while hugging me, saying he couldn't stand to be apart from me.

So I stayed behind, turning down my mother's love—just because I believed in theirs.
