Chapter 471

Author: Aurora Wells
Trey snatched the phone from her hand and glared coldly.

“Every time something happens, you run to my brother? You think he’s just sitting around waiting for your calls? Amy, the size of your ego is unbelievable.”

Amy froze.

She stared at Trey in disbelief. “You… you yelled at me? Mr. Wynn never yells at me.”

She looked utterly devastated, covering her face like she wanted to cry but was forcing herself not to.

Dolly and I exchanged looks—neither of us had expected this side of her.

Trey sneered. “My brother holds his tongue because he still shows you a little sympathy. But me? I don’t owe you a damn thing.

“So cut the act. Give it back, now. Or things are going to get ugly.”

He was clearly losing his patience.

Instead of backing down, Amy grew even more stubborn.

Tears streaming, she began dumping the contents of her bag onto the floor.

“I didn’t take it! I swear I didn’t! How would I know Miss White had something so valuable in her bag? I’m not a thief! Wuuu…”

I looked at the mess

Miles’ voice turned cold. “Why did you give it to Eve?”Trey stammered. I suddenly spoke up, “Because Trey’s going abroad with Tina. He asked me to keep it safe for him. It wasn’t a gift—something that valuable, I wouldn’t dare accept.”Miles glanced at me. I held his gaze, forcing myself not to look away. His expression finally softened. He looked at Amy. “Amy, did you take it or not?”Amy shook her head, eyes full of hurt. “No. Sir, you have to believe me. I really didn’t take it. I won’t take something that expensive. I know I’d go to jail if I did.”Worried he still doubted her, she added, “My mom used to be called a thief all the time. I’d never do something like that.”Miles seemed to remember something. He let out a sigh. “Get up. The floor’s cold.”Amy blinked, then quickly wiped her tears and stood up.But after sitting too long, she stumbled as she rose and fell straight into Miles’ arms.He reached out instinctively to steady her.Her tanned face flushed deep red, and she l

I asked, “Who was it?”Dolly was so anxious she started stomping her foot. “It was Amy! No one else came in. There’s no way the nurses touched your stuff.”As she spoke, she rushed off to get the bodyguards to chase after Amy.I sat frozen for a moment before quickly calling Trey.My voice was a mess of panic. “Trey… T-Trey… come quick. The brooch is gone.”Trey paused on the other end. “What? What do you mean gone?”I was so distraught my voice cracked. “I don’t know! I left it in my bag, and Dolly said… she said it was Amy…”Trey immediately tried to calm me. “Don’t panic, Evelyn. You’re still at the hospital, right? I’m on my way. I’ll help you find it.”I hung up, pressing a hand to my chest. This was the first time I’d ever lost something so valuable.Regret hit me hard. Why hadn’t I locked it away? Why had I been so careless?A while later, Dolly and the bodyguards came back with Amy.Her face was flushed bright red. “It wasn’t me! I didn’t take it! I swear I didn’t!”Dolly looke

Dolly gave me a sharp look, her expression screamed utter disappointment. We returned to the hospital room, and sure enough, Amy hadn’t left. She was peeling fruit, slicing it carefully into a bowl.Dolly’s eyes landed on the hand that had just wrung out a filthy mop now holding freshly peeled fruit, and her expression turned complicated. She quickly snatched the knife and bowl from Amy’s hands. “Miss Lane, your hand’s injured. You should go rest.”Amy glanced at me apologetically and said shyly, “I’m fine. Miss White, you’re back from your checkup? What did the doctor say?”I brushed off the question with a vague answer and started trying to ease her out. “Miss Lane, Miles won’t be coming today. He’s tied up in meetings at the office. Maybe you should head home for now?”Her face fell instantly. She lowered her head, looking wounded. “Is Miss White bothered by me being here? I just wanted to help.”I winced inwardly. These were the kinds of situations I dreaded most.I really didn’t

She wrung the mop out with one hand as she spoke.Watching her, I felt a chill run down my spine.Hospital mops were filthy, and she didn’t even hesitate before squeezing it barehanded.Even the nurse couldn’t hold back. “Miss, you really shouldn’t touch the mop with your hands. What if there’s a stray needle stuck in it?”The words had barely left her mouth when Amy let out a sharp breath.I quickly motioned for the nurse to check.Sure enough, a shard of glass tangled in the mop had sliced open Amy’s palm. The nurse rushed to get hydrogen peroxide and disinfectant.I sat there in my wheelchair, watching Amy sit on the sofa with a pale face as the nurse tended to her. What was there to say?I let out a long sigh and continued watching silently.A while later, Dolly finally arrived. She stepped in, took one look at the wet floor, then at Amy’s hand wrapped in bandages and her temper exploded.“Miss Lane, what are you doing?” she snapped, her voice rapid-fire. “There are janitors here

Julian’s expression twisted with sarcasm. “You’re afraid Miles will find out?”I stayed silent.Silence meant yes, and Julian’s face turned cold.He tossed the bouquet onto the grass. “Forget it. I just came to see how you were. Since you’re fine, I’ll go.”I still said nothing. He took a few steps, then suddenly turned back.I sat in the wheelchair, watching the complicated look on his face.In the end, I softened. I sighed. “Julian, we’re divorced. You should go back.”He hesitated, standing right in front of me. “Eve, I saw the news these days. You seem… happy.”I didn’t confirm nor deny. After all, if I told him I was happy and doing well, wouldn’t that only make him angry? Then I found myself laughing inside. Was I really still worried about how Julian felt about me?I spoke slowly. “Julian, you should go back to the company. They need you.”His eyes flickered, but then he said flatly, “Whether I’m there or not doesn’t matter anymore. The board doesn’t care about me.”I frowned
