ARIANA

The twins are at Maxwell's for the weekend, and the house is quiet in a way it almost never gets to be. Today, it’s just me, the garden, and the low hum of the staff somewhere inside.

I'd forgotten Mason said he was coming. The Bindy meeting is still sitting heavy in my chest, and I've been out here an hour, reviewing documents from the logistics branch of Bindy business, to keep my mind from wandering somewhere I don't want it to go.

Then my phone rings. It's Durrell's assistant, Greg.

ARIANAHe doesn't tell me it'll be fine, and he doesn't offer empty reassurance dressed up as comfort. He just pulls me into him, one hand at the back of my head, and the other holds firmly yet gently against his chest."You have to keep living," he says quietly, against my hair. "No matter what. You don't get to disappear just because he might be gone for a while. Think of him as okay, wherever he is. And when the time is right, he'll come back."I don't know why those words settle me the way they do. Maybe because they don't promise anything false. Maybe because he isn't trying to fix what can't be fixed, he's just standing here, letting me fall apart without flinching from it.I'd been cautious around Mason once, for reasons I couldn't fully name even to myself. I can't remember exactly when that caution started fading. Maybe it was the phone calls, the tea, or the way he never pushed, and never once made me feel managed. The way he always seemed to appear exactly when something i

It's Durrell's assistant, Greg."Mrs. Chase." He never quite gets used to calling me anything else, not Ariana, not Cox, always something formal and careful. "The purchase is complete."I straighten. "The shares.""Yes, ma'am. All outstanding board positions Mr. Cox identified have been acquired." A pause, like he wants to make sure I understand the shape of what he's about to say. "Your total Cox holding now places you second only to Mr. Cox."I sit straight on the low stone bench at the edge of the flower bed. "Second only t

ARIANAMason's suggestions arrive like weather, quiet, unannounced, and somehow always correct.I don't tell my office team where the ideas actually come from. I simply frame them as mine."I think we should approach the second contractor through their insurance broker instead of legal." And then I watch three people who've been stuck for a week suddenly find a door they hadn't noticed. It works. Every time, it works.Chris hasn't said anything, but I've caught him looking at me a beat too long after I hand down one of Mason's suggestions, like he's doing arithmetic in his head and the numbers keep landing on the same answer. He's smart enough not to say it out loud. I appreciate that about him more than I've told him."Where did that idea come from?" he asked once, mildly, not really expecting an answer."Does it matter?""No." He went back to his screen. "Just curious who's smarter than me."I laughed, and let it go, and so did he.***Mason calls most evenings now, not always abo

ARIANAThe twins' birthday is in six days, and somehow that's the only date I can hold onto with any certainty right now.Everything else keeps slipping.Durrell should have been arguing with me about the cake by now. He'd have pretended not to care, sighed about it being "just a cake," and then somehow ended up choosing everything anyway, the frosting, the color of the balloons, the exact shade of blue Thea likes best this month. That was always how it went with him. Complain first, control everything second.Instead, it's Maxwell doing it. Nowadays, Maxwell and Mrs. Florence are deep in some group chat with Mrs. P about party favors and cake flavors.A level of cooperation between the two households that should feel like relief, but mostly just feels like Durrell is being replaced one detail at a time.Thea comes home from Maxwell's smelling like someone else's laundry detergent, chattering about Mrs. Florence's biscuits before she's even out of her car seat. Ethan has started ca

SELENEMy breath catches, and our eyes meet. Neither of us looks away, and the room suddenly feels smaller.I am the first to break eye contact. "When we get home, we'll discuss this.""Why not now?""Because you're in a hospital."He smirks. "I'm still capable of having a conversation."I look at him. "And because you need to recover."He gives me a knowing look. "Or because you're thinking about running to the Tucker twins again?"My eyes snap back to his. "What?""You heard me.""Are you seriously doing this now?""I'm just asking.""No, you're provoking me.""Perhaps." He shrugs.I stare at him. "It seems you lack the emotions to understand how I truly feel."His expression becomes serious. "Don't mistake restraint for ignorance."I say nothing and just stare at him."I know exactly what love is," he continues. "And I know exactly what it isn't." His voice is quiet now. "Just because I chose to make sacrifices for it doesn't mean I never felt it."I study him. There is no arroganc

SELENEIt has been a week.A full week since Victor collapsed on the jet and nearly died before we could get him to Niveria. He is alive, and out of danger. And, according to the doctors, he is extremely lucky. But Victor doesn't seem impressed by any of that. He is more interested in Durrell."He's fine," I tell him for what must be the tenth time.Victor looks at me from the hospital bed. "You don't know that.""Neither do you." I remind him.His jaw tightens. "The Kravens have him, and you say that like it's reassuring.""It actually is." He gives me a look, and I sigh. "Beatrice said they won't harm their own blood.""Beatrice also said a lot of things." "Then trust the part that matters." He looks away. "The Kraven death sentence on me isn't a joke."I study him. "No. It definitely isn't."His eyes return to mine. "Then you understand why I can't sit here doing nothing.""You almost died.""I know.""Twice. Your heart stopped twice." I fold my arms. "And you're still more worr
