"Fuck off out of my mind, bird boy."
"How can you expect me to do that when you've bought the most beautiful prey to school for show and tell?"
"Do you want me to transport you to a different dimension, Talon? Don't bloody test me."
Talon Greyson, the last eagle shifter in existence, smiled from his spot in the library. Having the powers of all eagle shifters who have ever lived made Talon one of the strongest prey-driven shifters at the Academy, but even he knew not to push Mossimus too far. The elven king was a real force on campus, and it was no surprise that he would be the guardian for Ruby Hunter, the one who was destined to save them all.
"Oh, great, can you tell Caleb and Wolfe to back the fuck off or Ruby will get suspicious? One's practically humping her leg, and the other one is looking all broody and shit. If she sees him in the air before she's ready, I don't know what she'll do."
"Oh no, can do, sorry, amigo. I am in the library across campus, doing as I'm told, by you earlier, don't tell me the dog and demon didn't listen to you, I am so surprised."
There was a loud whirring sound in Talon's ear, and a sudden wave of dizziness overcame him. He shut his eyes to balance himself until he felt blazing heat burning his feet. He opened his eyes to the horrifying sound of sinners screaming and flames as tall as the mountains blazing around him.
Talon was lost for words and impressed all at once. Moss had sent him into the bowels of Hell while being across the other side of the Academy, that wasn't easy magic to do, yet he'd done it without letting Ruby know something was going on, that was some feat.
"You win, Elf King. I'm on my way."

I could see her, but she couldn't see me. In my natural form, high above the clouds, my eyes zero in on my Queen. I would know her scent anywhere, have smelt her exoticness through a hundred lifetimes, and each time she is reborn, my possessiveness grows. One beat of my wings and I could decimate the entire Academy; one strike of my talons could tear through a dozen men, but one look at my Queen and I am slain, completely at the mercy of the keeper of my heart.
From my vantage point, Ruby looked tiny, and if it were anyone other than Mossimus or the four shielding her with their magic, I would think nothing of sweeping down and picking her up, flying away to safety.
But I have to bide my time, as Talon, Wolfe, and Caleb have; only the Elven King will know when Ruby will be ready to receive us. In the meantime, she will be put in a studio apartment attached to our quarters and guarded by the strongest magic the four factions combined can provide. Ruby has to be the one to seek each of us out, to befriend us, and place her trust in us all completely.
I have read the prophecy. I know her body is made to take us all, but looking down on her now, Ruby is a speck on the battleground called Earth, and we are the four swords she wields in battle. I only hope my Queen can master all five disciplines in time for the dark war ahead.
I fly a little lower, seeing others advancing on Ruby, and it's all I can do to stay in the skies and not swoop like I want to. I ease up slightly, recognizing Wolfe's heat signature, and Caleb is just below me but also watching from the sky, technically not breaking Mossimus's silly rules, but wanting to get a look in before Ruby becomes everyone else's for the day.
Once she's inside and the gates have closed, I know she's safe within the magic layers of the Elven Kingdom, aka the Academy, and I can breathe a little easier. I have just enough time to find a place to transform into my human form before the first class of the term starts.
unknown.I watched as she entered the grounds that would become her grave. So cheerful and innocent on the arm of the Elven King, everyone thinks she's the savior, but I know who she really is, and I would see her blood fall before the four unite with her. We, the keepers of the shadows, have been waiting in the dark for so long. This slip of a girl could not be allowed to close the barrier we've been slowly tearing down for centuries. One gun, four rounds, and Ruby would choose who goes where. Poor souls, they don't know we exist; they won't even see us coming.I have studied each of the four in detail. The wolf shifter who wears his heart on his sleeve like a big, fluffy toy is the easiest target for sure, as long as I can separate him from his pack. The eagle is cunning, not so easily fooled, and he shows caution, preferring his own company, a habit I need to break, and I can be very persuasive when I need to be. The Dragon shifter will be a challenge, centuries old and wise even b
After declaring that he needed to attend to something else and gaining assurance from Ruby that she would stay in her apartment until he came and got her for the last period, Moss left, carefully closing Ruby's door.At first, she just stood there, letting her mind absorb the enormity of being here, without her parents. It was weird, but Ruby didn't feel lonely, at least not yet. Her apartment really was something out of her imagination, and she'd be happy just standing and looking at everything for the rest of the day, but last period was homeroom, where introductions would be made, and Ruby wanted to be prepared."Shower time." She announced to the air, jumping as an automatic voice responded, "Shower, on, temperature setting required." "Um," Ruby had no idea what temperature she had set her shower to, so she replied, "Normal, please."In a matter of minutes, the voice told her the water was ready, and the heated towel rail was on for her uniform and towel while she got clean. It wa
It was an apartment that looked like someone had gone through her mind, picking everything she loved, styles, textures, shapes, and designing the apartment of her dreams. Everything was perfect,"Pinch me.""You'll have to come to me for me to be able to do that," Moss chuckled. Turning around, Ruby found him still waiting at the entry; he didn't follow her into her new home. She furrowed her brow, oddly displeased. "Please tell me why you're still outside- you're not a vampire, are you?" She joked, and Moss chuckled, " No, definitely not a vampire, but it's school rules that nobody is allowed into anyone else's quarters unless invited. "Well, isn't that very forward-thinking?" Ruby grinned, "Come on in then."Ruby's composure lasted long enough for Moss to enter and close the door before she let out a loud scream of excitement, running around and touching everything from the coffee maker to the nearby capsules in all the different flavors she loved."This is mine, and that is mine,
She has spunk, my little mate. It was cruel of me to push an ecstasy spell on her. I overdid it a bit, and would be answerable to the school dean and the elf king as well, but I'm not sorry. I learned what I needed to, and Ruby Hunter wasn't strong enough to handle me. Why would they pair the four strongest bloodlines in the world with a human who can't even deflect a small love spell? I try to control my disappointment and put on the stupid uniform. It was tolerable to be in the Academy purely because of the decadent apartments we have, carefully tailored to each individual's rank and status, but the uniform was not flattering at all. My wings felt all cramped even though magic ensured the uniform fit around everyone's shapes and sizes, with a glamour making us all seem "normal."Talon, Wolfe, Storm, and I were in the top-tier housing; we took up the elite section of the Academy, and our apartments were arranged in a circle, with a vacant single apartment in the center. This can't be real.Moss had arrived right on time this morning, in full Academy uniform, looking better than any male had a right to, and, not for the first time, she wondered how she had such a hot best friend. Saying goodbye to her parents was a blur, and Ruby couldn't remember much about the drive there, beyond the fact that she was flipping terrified.Driving to the outskirts of town and parking in the car park was when the real panic set in."I don't think I can do this," Ruby whispered, and Moss quickly took her hand. " It's all going to be okay, I promise," and a calmness started to seep into her bones. "You deserve the best in life, my friend, and I'm here to make sure that happens."Once they were out of the car, Ruby went to the boot to gather the large suitcases she would need to lug to the dorm she was put in, but sensing what she was doing, Moss grabbed her hands. " It's a private school for a reason, honey, we have people to do the mundane things while we grow our big b
