Prologue
Have you ever been afraid? People are afraid of many things, sometimes just the idea of fear itself is enough to make you afraid. What was I afraid of? Nothing, at first. Then the fear came hurtling across the landscape towards me and it sucked me right in. I was afraid of only one thing. Me. I was never afraid of the dark, even as a little child, because I was blessed, later I called it my curse, but I when I was still young and innocent, I was blessed. My mother loved me beyond what is normal and my father was always there, right beside me. They loved each other completely, I looked at them and I wanted that for myself. I was raised in the clowder knowing my place in this world. I was the future Alpha and hopefully I’d be an Enforcer too, my father was my hero, the strongest man I knew. We had a large extended family but I was never spoiled. They taught me right from wrong and they taught me respect, but they also taught me never to back down, to stand against the world if I had t

“Griff!” I opened my eyes and turned onto my back. It was the first day of the last year of school. Last night had gone on late and I still had a slight headache throbbing at the base of my skull. Mac, Jett and I had gone out to the woods, the deep woods, to drink and spar. Alcohol didn’t affect us as it did humans but enough consumption could lead to foolish actions. I groaned as I got up when I heard Finley’s footsteps outside my bedroom door. “Are you up?” she asked as she pushed my door open. “Geez mom, some privacy,” I said as I stood in my underwear. Her gaze never wavered as she looked at me. She was a beautiful woman, weird and complicated, but she was my mother and even if she couldn’t physically beat my ass, she’d tase me. Oh yes, you read that right. She tased my dad too, a few times, and then she laughed as he lay spasming on the ground. “Why can’t you sleep in pajamas like normal people?” she asked me. “Normal? In this family?” I asked her and she smiled at me. “Ye

I watched Travis for about a week and during that time I found out everything I could about Samantha Cartwright. He hadn’t made his move yet although I saw that he started being nice to her friend, Jennifer. Samantha walked to and from school every day and they lived in the lower class area of Newport. She always had a book with her and she was one of the top academic students of the school. She never wore revealing clothes and opted for jeans, sneakers and hoodies in the winter and jeans and modest tops in the summer. She didn’t partake in sports although she did go for long walks, sometimes only returning after dark. Her parents didn’t seem to be in the picture and she lived with her older sister who was rarely home, which meant she was basically by herself. “What’s going on with you?” Damon asked me one night after dinner. “Just school stuff,” I said. Damon had brought me into his office because my father really knew me too well. He was an expert in reading people but with the

I dropped Mac and Jett at the packhouse and left without going inside. They both looked at me questioningly as I reversed the truck and drove down the tree lined lane back through the woods. I wondered briefly how long it would take before my phone started ringing. I knocked on the front door for a second time when I heard soft footsteps coming from the staircase and falter in front of the door, like they were waiting for me to knock again. “I know you’re standing right in front of the door Samantha,” I said and I could hear her intake of breath. She wasn’t expecting that one and this time I did smile. “What are you doing here?” she asked through the door. “It’s cold out here, come on, open the door,” I said to her. She unlocked it and slowly opened the door just slightly so she could look at me. She looked pale and sweaty at the same time like she had a fever and I just looked at her bundled up figure as I put my hand against the door and started to push it inwards. “Are you goi

‘Not going to school today’ – Samantha. I saw the text as I headed out of my room with my backpack and found Mac and Jett already stuffing their faces. I didn’t have much of an appetite and they both noticed as I pushed the half full plate away after taking a few bites. “What’s up with you?” Mac asked me. “Samantha,” I said and they both looked at me. “Bare your heart brother, I’ll be your Dr. Phil,” Jett said as I glared at him. “I went back to her house last night,” I said as Jett interrupted me. “Ah true to your rep brother, you move quickly,” he said suggestively as I smiled and shook my head. “Don’t be an idiot, Jett,” Mac said to him. “Anyway, she has no heating in the house or food,” I said and Mac stopped eating. “What?” he asked me as he looked at his plate. “That’s not right,” Jett said. “I thought she lived with her sister?” Mac asked. “Yeah but her scent’s very faint, she hasn’t been there in at least a month,” I said to him. “Is Samantha going to school today?

“Honey, I’m home!” Jett yelled as he opened the front door. “Oh shit sorry, is she still asleep?” “She’s in the kitchen douchebag,” Mac yelled back as Jett laughed. I heard some muttering and low curses and fifteen minutes later Jett joined us in the kitchen just as we started dishing up. Samantha hadn’t said anything else but she was sitting at the small table just looking at us. “We’re making you some soup as well,” I said as I handed her a plate which she took with shaky hands. “Why?” she asked me. “Again with the questions?” I asked her as she looked down. “What he meant to say was we’re here to look after you, you’re Griff’s girl now and that means you’re part of the gang and we look after our own,” Jett said. “He didn’t mean ‘gang’ as in mobster gang,” Mac said as I closed my eyes briefly. “Are you in a gang?” she asked him. “No,” we all said in unison. “Oh,” she said. “Eat.” I looked at her until she took the first bite before continuing to eat my own food. By Sunday morning Samantha wasn’t as terrified of us anymore and she had laughed a few times as well. I could tell she still felt weird about the food in her house and waiting for the other shoe to drop. I hadn’t made a move on her, nothing, not even touching. At this point I was just being her friend and making sure she was eating and looking after herself. “What time are we heading home?” Jett asked me as we finished cleaning up after lunch. “Probably just before dinner,” I said to him as I closed the last cupboard. “I gather you’ll be spending more weekends here,” he said. “Maybe, why?” I asked him. “Thought I should leave the tv behind, I gave Sam the password to our N*****x,” he said as he sat down. “Yeah, leave it,” I said to him. We headed back to the living room and stopped short as we heard Jennifer and Samantha talking in low voices, probably thinking that there was no way that we could hear them. “I don’t know Sam, I mean what does he want for all this?” Jennifer ask

We turned onto Samantha’s street and I parked the truck in front of her house. I looked at it and I just knew she wasn’t there. She was showing me that she wouldn’t just jump when I told her to jump. “Why are you leaving?” Mac asked me as I started the truck again. “She’s not here, she’s showing me she’ll do what she wants,” I said and took off in the direction of our school. We came across her five minutes later and I parked the truck right next to her and her eyes widened slightly when she saw us. Jett was hanging out of the window and she kept walking so I let the truck roll forward. “Hey Sam,” Jett said, “where are you going?” “What do you want?” she asked him. “Didn’t Griff tell you we were picking you up?” he asked her. “Yes,” she said. “Ah showing him who’s boss, I get it,” he said with a laugh. “Get in the truck Samantha,” I said through the open window. “So you can order me around some more?” she asked and I parked the truck. “Get her in the truck Jett,” I said. “N

“Hi,” Samantha said as she opened her front door and let me inside. “Hey,” I said as I shoved my hands in my jeans pockets and stood looking at her in the living room. “I never slept with Rosco,” she said suddenly and I sat down. “I didn’t think you did,” I said to her. “Then why are you mad at me?” she asked. “I’m not mad at you, I’m beyond pissed off with Rosco,” I said to her. “Okay, I just wanted to clear the air with you,” she said as she sat down opposite me. “Why?” I asked her. “I shouldn’t like you but I do. You’ve just been nice to me,” she said and couldn’t meet my eyes. “You like me?” I asked her and she gave a soft laugh. “Yes, but you also scare me,” she said and I could feel the honesty in her words. “You don’t ever have to be afraid of me,” I said to her and she looked up. “You’re scarier than Mac or Jett,” she said. “What happened with you and Rosco?” I asked her. “My parents had just left and I was alone, my sister was never here so I went to a party with

“Morning sweet cheeks,” Jett said loudly as he jumped out of the truck and opened the front door for Sam as she waited on the porch for us. “Morning,” she said as she frowned at Jett and climbed inside the truck. Things were a little awkward between us after that kiss because we’d both responded to it. If I hadn’t left last night I’m not sure what would’ve happened but I knew it was too soon. We didn’t talk on the way to school and I wasn’t sure what to say anyway. “Give us a minute,” I said as we parked in the parking lot and I turned to look at Mac and Jett. “No fornicating on school grounds,” Jett said as Mac smacked him behind his head and laughed as they climbed out. I smiled as I turned back and looked at Sam. She was looking down, toying with the fraying material of her backpack. She was nervous, I could tell and she wiped her hands on her jeans. “About last night…” I began to say as her eyes met mine. “It was a mistake right,” she said. “What? You think it was a mistake
