All six of them could’ve served as a horny woman’s wet dream. It would’ve been hard for any woman to pick just one.

They were big, muscled guys. Blond. Dark-haired. Redhead. Bald. All shades of complexion—tanned to pale, honey-colored to brown. And their eyes seemed to hold a sort of paranormal glamour. Their gazes lured and teased, haunted, and sometimes I would swear they glowed.

Camille approached their table.

The gorgeous men had been in deep conversation, but when she arrived, they went silent and focused on their silverware. This was new. Usually, they smiled and told her a few jokes. Sometimes, the blond one with the blue eyes even flirted, kissing her hand and bowing as he left.

Wasn’t his name Finn? She cracked her head.

Regardless, this time was different. And it was because of the new guy, Mr. Dark and Dangerous with the intense stare. Suddenly, their forks and knives were more interesting than her. In fact, the only one that turned her way was Mr. Dark and Dangerous.

“Hello. I’m Camille.” She pulled out her pen. “I was told you wanted your usual. Plates stacked with steaks. Medium rare. No sides. No onions. No peppers. Anything else?”

Mr. Dark and Dangerous deep voice held an edge as he spoke one word. “No.”

“What would you all like to drink?”

The others didn’t turn her way.

O-kay.

He answered for them. “Large glasses of water, please.”

“No beer or soda?”

The blond one, Finn, had been watching his fingers as he tapped out a beat. At the mention of beer, he turned those lovely blues her way. “Beer does sound good. Make it three."

Someone kicked him under the table. The silverware and old vase of plastic flowers shook.

“No beer.” Mr. Dark and Dangerous frowned. “The waters and steaks will be fine.”

“Okay.” She walked off, but not before hearing Mr. Dark and Dangerous groan in annoyance and tell his friends, “She smells so good. We don’t come here anymore, or I’m going to end up fucking her and then eating her afterward.”

A few of them laughed.

She was glad that none of them could see her face flush.

Maddox

The waitress’s scent drifted toward him, promising such delights. He yearned to bury his face in her hair and lose himself in the fragrance. His cock grew hard.

He reached down with his hand under the table and changed its position in his jeans.

His fangs threatened to pierce through his gums and reveal themselves. The waitress walked off and he ogled at her lush ass.

“Want!” Dire, his wolf twisted and groaned inside of him. He never had a human trigger such a reaction. Usually, his beast and him found human women too soft and fragile.

“Want now!” His beast howled.

No, not this one. She’s human.

His nostrils flared, inhaling Camille's scent some more, her pheromones tantalized. They reminded him of Clary sage mixed with fresh ginger.

The Clary sage exuded a sweet herbal aroma while the hint of ginger added a lemony, earthy, root-like fragrance. His body drummed with hunger. And food was the last thing on his mind.

She was the lamb, and he was the hungry wolf desperate to eat her.

He licked his lips.

“Want!” Dire roared in his head.

No!

He forced the beast to calm down.

“She smells so good.” He formed his fingers into fists on the table and glared at his pack. “We don’t come here anymore, or I’m going to end up fucking her and then eating her afterward.”

Several laughed.

Finn remained silent.

Why was he acting weird?

Every being had a certain odor about them. Scents held memories. A woman with the right one could entice his beast and have him thinking about her all night.

“Want!” Shut up. She’s human. He scolded his wolf.

Usually, he trusted his nose. A werewolf’s sense of smell dominated all shapeshifters and even other moon-touched. It was a hundred times greater than any creature walking this earth, including vampires.

Their olfactory system was different. While the humans’ and witches’ systems consisted of the nose and the nasal cavities, shapeshifters had sensors on their fingertips. And it didn’t matter if they were in human or beast form.

Therefore, they were able to use their noses and hands to find other pack members and avoid any enemies. Just from the scent alone, he would know the age and gender of the being.

“Want!”

Although she’d disappeared into the kitchen, the waitress’s scent remained in the air. He inhaled and studied the fragrance.

She was a young one. Thirty, definitely female and most certainly a human. Not one drop of moon-touched blood inside of her.

“Want!”

I’ve got it. Enough!

Something was off today. Never had his beast found a human woman’s scent pleasing. They had different pheromones than shapeshifters.

But a human's scent was much more different for a werewolf. With the right one, the scent could trigger addiction or even a mating response.

He inhaled the waitress’s fragrance trail.

She was more than ready to breed. She would be ovulating in five days.

He gripped the edge of the table, instantly yearning to fill her with his seed.

A dark growl left his throat.

The pack studied Maddox.

Finn curved his lips into an awkward smile. “She has that same effect on me.”

Inside his chest, Dire bared his fangs.

“Relax, Finn.” Maddox clenched his teeth. “She’s human and not for us.”

“But if she’s causing a reaction in us wouldn’t she be for us?”

Finn’s question pissed him off and Maddox didn't understand why a mere human woman was making him feel this way.

Post Vampyre slaughtering, blissfully unaffected as he chauffeurs me back to the Southwest pack. Lightly tapping his long fingers against the steering wheel to keep rhythm like a connoisseur. Would it be insulting to openly manifest my shock? Do I care about offending Zane?Yes. And yes, since I’ll be alone with him in this car for the next few hours. At the mercy he may not have.“Is this Bach?” I ask, with no real clue what Bach sounds like. In my previous life, back when I was a Human financial reporter whose idea of a mightily stressful time included judging the ripeness of watermelons or having to sneeze while driving, I gravitated toward pop.“Why didn’t you shift?” Zane asks instead of answering. His eyes never leave the

I do, surprisingly. In fact, I’m less concerned with what he feels, and more with . . . “How can I tell if someone is my mate? I want to know if I feel the same about you.”He waves the question away. “You don’t.”“How do you know?”“If you did, you’d be aware.”“That’s not true. Maybe the signs are there, but I’m missing them because I’m only half Were.”“You couldn’t miss them.”My throat is dry. My stomach, heavy with disappointment. Did I . . . ? No. Come on. I don’t want a mate, whatever that means. My sex drive’s cobwebs have grown their own cobwebs. I’ve always needed bucketloads of time alone. Plus, I’m still figuring out what I am. This isn’t the start of anything.Except.“I do feel . . . very safe. Here, with you,” I confess, retreating inward for a moment, groping at my unintelligible body and my tricky mind for clarity. Zane’s presence is cumbersome, and I feel like I’m stuffed too tight by him, but I am experiencing a stunningly quiet moment. No anxiety. No choking dread

“Can you . . .” I swallow. “These biological changes you mentioned. Can you control yourself?”The meaning takes a minute to sink in. When it does, I half expect Zane to resent my question, but there’s no trace of defensiveness in his firm tone. “Always.”It makes it easier to believe him. “So, basically, you just want to . . . ?”“Correct.” He nods casually. Yes, I would love a cup of Earl Grey. Yes, I’ll respond to a brief survey in exchange for a ten percent discount on my purchase. Yes, I do want to f—“I hope I don’t sound conceited, but . . . how is it different from the reaction of most Human men I’ve met?” I cringe the instant the words are out.“God. I do sound conceited. I’m sorry. I promise I don’t walk around thinking that my face launches a thousand erections— ”“You’re the most beautiful woman that I’ve ever seen,” he says simply.Like it’s not a big deal.Like he’s complimenting my taste in socks.Like I could resemble the reflection of a wart on a doorknob, and it wo

“You and the Vampyre are close, right?” he asks, full of that calm that borders on indifference. Is he making fun of me? “She explained what a mate is?"Slowly, I nod.“What Seraphine is to Lucien, you are to me.”Oh.Oh?Oh. “Is this a, um . . . terminal diagnosis?”His lips twitch. “No cure, I’m afraid.”“I see.” I clear my throat. “Well, this relationship sure escalated quickly.”His words surprised me, but the way the corners of his eyes crease in amusement shocks me tenfold. His laugh is a deep, warm chuckle that makes my heart stumble. “You have no idea, kid.”I cross my arms. “Should you be calling me ‘kid,’ given the situation?”“I’m not married to it. What would you prefer?”“Well, there’s always my actual name. But if you insist on a nickname, I’d prefer something with a bit more . . .”“More?”“More teeth.”His eyebrow rises. “Root canal?”“No. Come on, you know what I mean. Something that inspires fear.”“Real estate market crash.”“Okay, maybe less fear and more . . . aw

I’m sure it’s the start of every epic love story: a girl, trying to turn on a laptop and jabbing the power button with increasing violence. A very big man in a plaid shirt, leaning cross armed against a doorjamb, staring skeptically at her.The ego-pulverizing embarrassment of making a less-than-excellent first impression on someone your friends love and respect.Zane appeared in Lucien’s driveway a couple of hours ago, Lucien’s little sister in tow, triggering the family reunion that’s currently going on downstairs. It involves Daisy being bubbly, Seraphine pretending not to adore her, and Lucien pretending not to be awestruck by Serapine’s inability to successfully hide her adoration. It’s cute, and it deserves some privacy.Seraphine is at her best. I may not be at my worst, but I’m still a definite work in progress.I spent the last two months imprisoned in Vampyre territory. I was certain that my abduction would end with my spleen being fed to the raccoons, meaning that this is

Panic bursts anew in my chest. I shake my head violently. No. No.“Well, then.” His eyes soften, and he lets out a half-resigned, half-amused sigh. “Better make use of that rock in your hand, killer.”It takes me a beat to understand his meaning, and to realize that the Vampyre’s hold on my wrist has loosened. Twisting my arm free and stabbing the jagged edge of the rock into his stomach takes so little effort, it’s almost anticlimactic.“What the— ” The Vampyre doubles over. I’m about to hit him again, but he bounces back and slams me to the ground. He lifts his knife above his head, aiming for my throat. “You fucking bitch— ”He stops with an abrupt gasp, as though in the grip of a sudden illuminating revelation. He stares down at me, eyes bulging, mouth wide open, and I almost expect him to . . . apologize? Then, after coughing up a small rivulet of mulberry-colored blood, he loses his balance. I observe his descent, horrified, as he collapses right by my side, face-first into a pa
