I swore I’d never let anyone distract me from avenging my father’s death—not love, not friendship, and definitely not Rylan McKnight, the infuriating boy who seems hell-bent on making my life miserable. But digging into my father's murder uncovered a strange, supernatural world I never knew existed; and Rylan might be the key to my survival... Or my downfall.

The alley was dark, and the air was cold as I pulled my coat tighter around me. My heartbeat raced, my lips trembled, but my feet kept moving, leading me toward the shadowy figure ahead. A part of me whispered that he was the one, the man I had been searching for my entire life. Suddenly, a strong scent filled my nostrils, accompanied by the sound of boots behind me. My breath hitched as I spun around. A tall, ominous man stood there, his face hidden behind a black mask and a hoodie pulled low over his head. I glanced over my shoulder. The shadow I had been following had stopped, giving me a chance to catch up. Yet the masked man’s scent lingered, pulling me toward him with an irresistible force. “Stop,” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sudden gust of wind. The man reached for the edge of his mask as if to reveal his face. Then I felt it, a tap on my shoulder, followed by a faint, distorted voice calling my name. “Wake up, Maya!” White light blurred my vision as I opened my eyes to find a figure leaning over me. “You’re running late for your lectures, Maya. Get up!” my mom snapped, shaking me awake. Reality hit me hard as I swayed my head around. My heart still pounded in my chest. “You’ve got a lecture at 10 AM. Look at the time!” she said, pointing at the wall clock. “It’s five minutes past nine, and you know the transit takes 15 to 20 minutes to reach campus,” she grumbled, pulling clothes from my closet. “Go shower now and come downstairs for breakfast.” “Mom!” I groaned, slamming my fists on the bed. “I told you I didn’t want to go to college. I asked you to withdraw my application. You just ruined my sleep and my chance to see the face of the jerk who keeps haunting my dreams. I was so close!” “Enough, Maya!” she snapped, turning to face me. “I’ve had it with your nonsense. Get into that bathroom, freshen up, and get ready. You have ten minutes.” She slammed the door behind her. I grumbled under my breath as I dragged myself out of bed. *** My shoulders slumped as I stared at the campus building. Frustration and anger bubbled inside me. I had been so close, and now I was stuck here. For what? To study? What was studying compared to my investigation? “I hate this, Mom!” I muttered, clenching my fists as I stomped toward my department. Distracted, I collided with someone and fell flat on my back, my books scattering to the ground. “I’m so sorry, miss. Are you okay?” a deep, captivating voice asked. I looked up to see a man offering me his hand. Our eyes locked, and for a moment, I was lost in his forest-green gaze. “Your hand, miss?” he said, snapping me out of my daze. I batted his hand away and scrambled to my feet. “Watch where you’re going. Or get glasses if you need them,” I snapped, my irritation flaring. He tilted his head slightly, making my heart skip a beat. “You bumped into me, remember?” he said, his tone sharp. “Watch your steps, or maybe get glasses yourself.” Before I could retort, he turned and walked away. I clenched my fists, grinding my teeth. If looks could kill, he would be six feet under. Then he pulled on his hoodie, and my breath caught. My mind reeled as I stumbled back. The figure from my dream, the scent that had pulled me toward him, it was him. “Him... That’s him,” I whispered as he disappeared into the foggy distance. My phone buzzed, my mom’s name flashing on the screen. “Ugh!” I groaned, spinning on my heels and marching to class. How would I find him again? Did he study here? Was he a professor? Questions flooded my mind as I stared out the classroom window, the lecturer’s voice fading into the background. As soon as the lecture ended, I was the first to leave, my eyes scanning the campus for him. “Look who we have here,” a malicious voice sneered behind me. I knew that voice, and my blood boiled. “Never thought you’d make it to college,” she continued. “Surprising to see you here.” Tiffany stood in front of me, flanked by her two red-haired minions. She popped her bubble gum obnoxiously close to my face. “Enemies should always be surprised, shouldn’t they?” I retorted, glaring at her. “Oh, you’re right,” she said, a cruel smile spreading across her face. “And you just reminded me, we have unfinished business. Girls, grab her.” Her minions seized my arms, dragging me toward a secluded corner despite my struggles. “Let me go, Tiffany!” I yelled, jerking my head in protest. “Pin her to the wall,” Tiffany ordered. Her minions shoved me against the wall as Tiffany pulled a pair of scissors from her bag. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I demanded, my chest heaving, eyes wide with shock. “Just a little trim,” she said, bringing the scissors dangerously close to my hair. “Don’t you dare! Let me go!” I cried, struggling against their grip. But then something changed. Tiffany’s hands trembled, and the scissors fell to the ground. Her expression shifted to one of terror as she swayed slightly. “Hide, girls. Hide now,” she ordered, her voice shaking. Her minions fled, leaving me slumped against the wall, unsure of what was happening. Tiffany dropped to the floor, clutching the ends of her hair, and cutting them. “Stop it, please,” she begged, her voice breaking. “Don’t do this, my hair!” Her fake panic left me bewildered. “Tiffster?” someone called, rushing toward us. My heart caught in my throat as Tiffany threw the scissors toward me.Rylan's POV I woke up to someone planting kisses on my face. “Hey, stop that,” I grunted, wiping my face before opening my eyes and seeing Maya frowning at me. I sat up abruptly. “That’s not what I mean, I didn’t…” I tried to apologize. “Save it,” she said, raising her hand and moving to the edge of the bed to put on her shoes. “Hey,” I moved closer to her, kissing her shoulder. She flinched. “I’m sorry, okay? I almost forgot I was still with you,” I said apologetically. She looked over her shoulder. “Who did you think you were with, then?” she retorted sharply. “No one,” I whispered, and she looked away. “You think you slept with a slut last night, so you didn’t want her taking it personally, right?” she said, standing and facing me. “You’re putting words in my mouth, Maya,” I said, sitting on the edge of the bed. “Can we not fight this morning, please? For pity’s sake, we just had our first night together. Why are you finding fault already? I’m not used to sleeping wi
Rylan's POVI was too preoccupied with Maya to notice the rogues nearby. “Get your eyes off her!" I growled, zipping Maya's dress and pulling her to her feet. We were ambushed."What's going on? Who are these men?" Maya asked, her heart pounding, her body trembling."Hey, look at me." I cupped her face. "I'm here, okay? Relax," I assured her, and she nodded."Give us the girl, and no one gets hurt," said one of the rogues."What? They want me?" Maya cried, clutching my arm. "Don't let them take me! I haven't done anything wrong.""Who sent you?" I asked, trying to stay calm so as not to scare Maya."Hand over the girl, Rylan McKnight!" the rogue leader growled, aiming a gun at us."You’ve got the wrong idea. Come and try to take her if you can," I challenged, cracking my knuckles and locking my gaze on him. The other rogues howled."What are they doing, Rylan?" Maya cried, tears streaming down her face. Her distress distracted me as I tried to
Rylan’s POV“Maya!” I called out in panic, trying to hold her. “Open your eyes, Maya. Listen to me. I’m right here.”She clutched the blanket, her sweat-soaked dress clinging to her as tears streamed down her cheeks. The scene felt foreign to me; I had never seen anyone hallucinate before.“Let me go, please,” she sobbed, curling up on her side. “Mom… please help me, Mom. I don’t want this.”Her whimper felt like a sharp knife cutting through my heart. I didn’t know what had happened to her to cause such pain, but the sight was unbearable.“Do something!” Ryker yelled, snapping me out of my trance.“I hate you… so much,” she muttered, her breathing uneven.“Maya?” I pulled her up, and her eyes fluttered open. “What just happened to you? Who were you arguing with?”“I’m tired, Rylan,” she whispered, wiping her tears. “I need some rest. Is that too much to ask for?”“I won’t ask any more questions. Just relax, okay?” I said. She lay back on the blanket, facing me.I joined her, staring
Rylan’s POVThe persistent banging on my door jolted me awake. The pain in my head throbbed, blurring my vision. I hated hangovers, yet I couldn't stop myself from drinking too much last night.“Rylan!” Uncle Dawson's voice boomed, the force of his knocks shaking the walls.“Don’t break down my door!” I shouted back, scrambling out of bed. “It’s still early.”“It’s past 10 a.m., and you’re still sleeping!” he barked, pushing past me and entering the room. “Where were you last night? You made us look like fools in front of everyone.”I closed the door, leaning against it and folding my arms across my chest. “That’s what you get for doing things without my consent,” I retorted.“Stubborn brat! Have you found your mate? Who is she, and when are you introducing her to us?” he demanded.I ran my fingers through my hair and sat on the vanity chair.“I found her,” I said.“So, when are we meeting her?”“She’s human,” I blurted out.Uncle Dawson’s
Rylan’s POV“What if you’re lying again?” I said, turning away from her and picking up my phone from the bed.“I’m your sister. You should believe me!” Her tone was filled with disappointment.“I did once, but you broke that trust. I hate lies, Tiffany. You know that.”“You’re not even calling me Tiffster anymore! What has that slut done to you?” she cried, storming out of my room. I shook my head and followed her out.“Today is your birthday,” Uncle Dawson said the moment I reached the garage. He was standing with Beta Beckett.“So?” I tilted my head.“Where are you going? The guests will start arriving soon.”“I didn’t invite anyone, so why would my presence matter to them? They’re your guests. Take care of them,” I said, opening my car door.“Today is the end of the ultimatum, Alpha,” Beta Beckett added, drawing a glare from me. “If you don’t sense your mate, you’ll have no choice but to choose a random Luna.”“I know,” I replied sharply. “The day isn’t over yet, so don’t bother me
Rylan’s POVMaya’s reaction spoiled my mood for the day. I didn’t bother going to class; I went back home instead. I had no idea what I did this time. I thought we had moved past the rape incident. Why was she so pissed at me?“Hey, Rylan,” Tiffany greeted, walking into my room as I sat on the bed. “You came back so early. What happened?” she asked, sitting beside me.“For the last time, Tiffster, did Maya ever bully you?” My question caught her off guard as she narrowed her eyes at me.“Where is that coming from?”“Just answer the damn question!” I snapped, losing my temper. “There’s no way Maya would have bullied you to the extent of ruining your hair. She’s just human, and you’re a wolf from the Brook bloodline. How did she manage to overpower you?” My glare was intense, and she shifted back.“Fine, she didn’t, but I needed to teach her a lesson. Happy now?” she admitted.“How dare you!” I yelled, lifting my hand to hit her.“Don’t you dare!” Uncle Dawson’s voice interrupted as Tif
Maya's POV “You never cared to know, Mom. Why are you suddenly interested?” I asked, my voice breaking. “Whenever I tried talking to you about my problems, you never gave me a listening ear. You left me to handle my problems alone and forced your orders on me without caring about how I felt. Don’t try to act concerned now. Just focus on taking care of Annabel; she’s all you ever cared about,” I poured out, tears filling my eyes.“What are you talking about, sweetheart?” she asked softly, cupping my face with one hand. “Of course, I care about you. You’re my first child, so why would you think I care about your sister more than I care about you? I’m your mother. I will always listen to you, and I’m sorry if I failed you in that aspect. Why do you take those medications?”I sniffed, wiping my tears. “I was depressed, Mom. Mr. Dante…” I paused, watching my mother’s eyes narrow at me. “Never mind. You won’t believe me anyway,” I declared, storming into the bathroom.“Come on, sweetheart.
Maya’s POVMy chest tightened as I stared at him, my gaze filled with disdain. Tears welled in my eyes, but I fought to hold them back. He wasn’t done with me yet. Maybe his clients didn’t want minors anymore.“So, you can use me over and over again?” My voice wavered, despite my efforts to sound firm. “Fine, Rylan. Fine. Sell me off to those bastards—those monsters. But please, just tell me where Stephen is. Moxie needs him. Without him, she can’t survive.”“Why do you always assume I have something to do with Stephen?” His voice was barely a whisper. “You don’t even give me a chance to explain myself. When I try, you don’t believe me.”His eyes flickered amber, and I gasped, cringing in my seat. He clenched his fists, as if battling some internal struggle. Then he steadied himself. “Will you listen to me now, please?” he asked, his tone more controlled.“Fine,” I muttered, looking away from him.“I’m a regular at the club,” he began. “But I had no idea what Stephen was doing. I only
Maya’s POVI tried so hard to move on from the incident. It wasn’t the first time something like this had happened. I should be used to it by now, but the thought of Rylan orchestrating the whole scheme brought tears to my eyes. He had always bullied me, always hurt me. And for what? Pouring water on him? That was enough for him to hire men to assault me? How heartless could he be?My shoulders slumped as I walked to the bench where Moxie sat. “Hi,” I said, forcing a smile as I sat beside her. She didn’t even look at me. Her fingers repeatedly dialed a number, her hazel eyes shimmering with unshed tears.“What’s wrong, Moxie?” I asked, draping an arm around her shoulders. She jolted, startled by my touch. “What happened? Who are you trying to call so desperately?” I pressed, my concern growing. She wiped her tears and put her phone away before facing me. “I don’t deserve to be called your friend, Maya,” she said, tears now streaming freely. Her hands trembled as she spoke.“What are y
