Marissa's Pov

I kept smiling to myself as I went about preparing for bed. I couldn't believe I was smiling about Jack. Strange that I had thought he wasn't my type a few days ago.

I kept remembering his warm smiles and cringy jokes. The way he threw his head back in laughter. Like a man with no worries, nothing to hide. He spoke with kindness and that, to me, was more important than anything.

There was still the possibility that the alcohol had played a major part but it was best not to think of that right now.

Bridget had been squealing excitedly on the phone since she got home. Squealing and asking a lot of questions of course.

“You got his number right? Please tell me you did. " She said, her voice sounding like she was bouncing on her toes.

“Yeah. He wants a proper date tomorrow. And I agreed." I said through the wad of toothpaste in my mouth.

“Oh my God Rissa. You're going to be the wife to a CEO!"

“Jesus! Calm down Bree. It's just one date. We can't say that yet."

“Oh but a girl can hope can't she?" She sighed dreamily, " Oh to be the best friend to a CEO's wife. Oh my God we'd be living a fairytale life!”

Jack Tinsel was rich but not rich enough for a fairytale life surely. I didn't try to correct her though. Her excitement was beginning to rub off on me and I found myself thinking about what life would be like if I was as rich as Jack.

I got by just fine with the kids now. I made a decent living. Elias had been the major provider for the first year after my accident. Then he'd relegated himself to assistant after I started working. It's what he called himself but he was doing much more than assisting.

When the twins had turned three, I'd firmly told him to stop providing unless I explicitly asked him to. I'd felt guilty relying on him so much even though he insisted that I was not a burden to him.

These days, I made sure not to ask for anything at all. He still went out of his way to buy things around the house as ‘’gifts’ and I was tired of fighting him about it.

But if I became a CEO's wife, he wouldn't need to do any of that anymore. In fact, I could repay everything he'd done for me all these years.

“Did you hear what I said?” Bree asked. I had gotten so lost in thought I didn't realize she was still speaking.

“Sorry, What?"

“I said I think you should call him." She declared with a gasp.

“Why? Isn't that too early?" I asked incredulously.

“Yeah, you're right." She said pensively, “Wouldn't want to come off as desperate."

I laughed and shook my head in disbelief, “Chill out Bree. We have a date tomorrow so I'm sure he's gonna call."

Jack didn't call.

I jumped every time my phone rang, hoping it would be him but it never was. I called multiple times but kept getting voicemail.

“Maybe something came up. You know, busy CEO life and all that." Bree tried to be reassuring but I could tell she didn't believe her own words. She'd shown up at my house in the morning, determined to be here to dress me up for the date.

But by mid afternoon, Jack still hadn't reached out.

By evening, I'd given up on hearing from him. Bree on the other hand was livid on my behalf.

“He could've sent a text, you know? Said something at least! I can't believe he stood you up!" She yelled as she reached for the bottle of wine between us.

“Bree it's fine. I'm sure he has his reasons. And no more wine for you." I snatched the bottle away before she could grab it.

“Arghhh....I thought he'd be different.” She groaned and rolled her eyes.

"Ah well, it's not like I was that interested in him anyway. The alcohol at the party must've made us both relax. But sober, I don't think we're compatible." I said morosely.

“What are you talking about? You wanted this date." Bree turned to me sharply.

“Yeah….I did." I stared into my glass solemnly.

“You know what? That's enough! If Jack wouldn't take you out on a date, that's his loss. Grab your keys, let's go get wasted!" She jumped up from the chair.

I looked from her to the almost empty bottle of wine between us. “Oh what the hell. Let's do it.!"

I typed off a message to Mrs Quincey that the kids might have to sleepover at her place tonight. She wouldn't mind at all and neither would the twins. Well at least Ashlyn wouldn't. Asher was another story.

Bridget and I headed for the bar.

  • Alpha Zayne's Regret   Chapter 16

Zayne's Pov Mayflower Estate was a ten minute drive from the office building. I had expected some sort of high end living establishment. A gated community with heavy security. But Hallowden was a much smaller town than I could wrap my head around it would seem. The estate was a simple stretch of road marked by a signpost reading, Mayflower Estate, along with the town's emblem or something. The houses here were posh alright, but still rather humble looking from my perspective. I couldn't tell which was Jack Tinsel's of course so I drove out of the estate and waited two minutes away for his car to pass. It took over an hour for him to show up. All through that time I could only think of how he was with Marissa. Talking with her. Dancing with her. Worming his way into her heart. If he were any other guy, maybe I wouldn't have been too bothered. But he was her boss. They probably spent a lot of time in close proximity with each other everyday at work. Which was why

Zayne's Pov She looked radiant. Astonishing. The dress clung to her skin, highlighting the parts of her that had filled out within the past five years. Whatever she'd done to her hair worked. The jewelry glinted off her smooth neck and her makeup, Flawless. I'd never seen her this way before. No, I had. She'd always liked to dress up. Wearing heels around the house, walking past me seductively. She'd dress up, tease me until I couldn't take it anymore. Tease me until I grabbed and flung her over my shoulder while she squealed with pleasure. I'd tear the clothes off her while she giggled uncontrollably. I'd ravage her till the sun went down. And went up again. The first two years of marriage had been blissful. What the hell happened? Stupid question to ask. I happened. She threw her head back in laughter at some joke Jack whispered in her ear. My fists clenched together and I stopped myself before I crushed the glass in my hand. I didn't want to draw attention to

Elias's Pov The cogs were in place. The gears in motion. My work for now, was done. Zayne's instructions had been simple; Convince her to attend the party. Drive her there. Make yourself scarce. Done, done and done. I snagged two glasses of champagne from a waiter's tray and downed them both. They wouldn't make a difference. Werewolves couldn't really get drunk on normal alcohol. We'd need a shit ton of it to feel a slight buzz. The booze we drank in the pack was brewed specially for wolves and would knock out a human with a few sips. Still, a guy could only try. I held out a hand to halt the next waiter I saw approaching and grabbed two more glasses. “Actually, wait." I said to him, hanging onto his collar. I drank both glasses, replaced them on his tray, drank two more, and took the last one to go. “There's a good lad. Run along." I waved him off. He glowered at me at first but then shrugged, obviously deciding If I wanted to get shit faced before the party even bega

Marissa's Pov “ Was starting to think you'd left the party early." He chuckled lightly. He looked more relaxed and confident. The words seemed to flow easier now. I reckoned that was thanks to the half filled glass of champagne he held lazily in one hand. “I just came to grab some punch and I got sidetracked.” I replied, chuckling back. " I can see that.” His eyes fell on the man beside me and his smile dipped just a little. Still friendly and warm but also with a hint of something else. " Hello. Jack Tinsel. I run the place.” He extended a hand to Zayne in greeting. Zayne had gone rigid since Jack arrived. never mind a smile dip, his was completely gone from his face. “Ah. The Jack Tinsel. I've heard about you." He replied. There was a two second hesitation before he accepted the hand shake. Two seconds but it felt longer. “Zayne. Zayne Blackwood." A name. A name just like any other but all of a sudden the breath seized up in my lungs and my head spun. I teetered on

  • Alpha Zayne's Regret   Chapter 12

Marissa's Pov The atmosphere in the car felt a little tense. Not for Bridget though. She stayed on a call with her long distance boyfriend throughout the fifteen minute drive. Elias kept his eyes steadfastly on the road, only stealing quick glances at me through the rearview mirror. There was a tense, almost frightened aura around him today. I'd never seen him frightened. Not for anything. He was the grounded one. Level headed, holding my hands through the rough times, throwing himself in the face of danger to protect me. Now his knuckles gripped the steering so tightly they started turning white, and his jaw kept twitching like he was about to say something but never did. He didn't speak to me until we pulled into the parking lot. “And we're here." He announced, almost mournfully. “Looks like we weren't running late after all." Bree said in relief. Elias, ever the gentleman, stepped out first and then came over to open the doors for Bree and I. The party was h
