I was still sitting there, surrounded by gifts I couldn’t open. My fingers flexed unconsciously. I exhaled slowly and pushed myself to my feet.

“I’m heading out,” I said quickly.

Both my parents turned toward me immediately.

I stepped around the chair, already moving toward the door. The urgency was clawing at me again as time was moving, and every second I stayed here was another second Derek was still out there.

My hand was just about to reach the door handle when—
