CHAPTER 4: DANGEROUS STRANGER

CHAPTER 4: DANGEROUS STRANGER

“I’ll drop you to your condo,” Kane offered after a whole afternoon of investigation since I didn’t bring my car with me.

“Thanks, but I still have to do something. I will call a taxi.”

“Is it urgent? Maybe we should have dinner first?”

“Next time, Kane. I have to meet someone.”

His lips protruded. “You…” He pointed at me. “You are meeting someone?”

“Yeah. I just said it, didn’t I?”

“Must be related to work?”

I shook my head because he will just ask more questions.

“Wait. Are you going on a date, Amber?” He was grinning. It was like he knew that it would be the last thing I’d want to do.

“No, but can you stop being nosy? Just leave, Kane. Your wife must be waiting for you at home. I don’t want Jessy to think you’re having an affair with me again. It’s disgusting.”

He shrugged and smirked. “She’s just jealous because she loves me.”

I shook my head and waved at him before going inside the taxi I hailed.

I think about the message sent to me earlier. I texted back and asked who the sender was, but I received nothing. I don’t know if the murderer is playing with me, or the person who texted really knows something. But when I saw those scratches, I started to doubt if it was done by a human. What if there are other creatures like that one who killed my mom?

I went inside the café and my eyes wandered around. Some tables were occupied and there was just one person alone at his table.

Our gaze met. He waved his hand at me with a sly smile on his lips.

“Who are you?” I asked the moment I sat across from him. He looked just my age or even probably younger. His brown eyes reminded me of someone, but the look in it was different. It was full of wickedness. There is no doubt this guy is good looking but definitely not someone I can trust with. I have this feeling that he is up for something.

He smirked. “Let’s say I’m just a concerned citizen, Detective.”

“What do you know about the death of two students in Mansfield?”

“I just know who the killer is.”

“Why would you know who the killer is? Were you also there? Do you have evidence?”

“Yeah, I saw it,” he said smiling.

I sighed and stood.

“Wait, where are you going?”

“Look, I think we have nothing to discuss.”

It was obvious that he was just lying when he said that he saw the crime. I don’t know what his motives are, but I think he wants to point someone as the murderer. I bet he only has his words with no evidence at all. So, what’s the point of dealing with him?

“I know what you are trying to do. You want to point someone, right? But it’s obvious you don’t have evidence.”

He didn’t say anything and just smirked at me as he was amazed that I caught him that fast. I shook my head and walked out of the café.

I hailed a taxi and immediately went in. But just after I closed the door and saw who was in the driver’s seat, I was stunned.

“I really don’t like being left like that especially by a girl, Detective.”

I know he remained at the table after I went out. How the hell is it possible that he’s here? No ordinary human would be that fast.

“Who are you?” I asked firmly.

“You may call me Stan,” he said as he drove past the café.

“I think the right question should be, what are you?”

He might be another supernatural being, but what does he has to do with me? Is it really true he knows something behind the death of those two students? If that’s the case, the more I should be involved with this. Who knows he will lead me to that man?

“Why aren’t you screaming and telling me to stop the car? I think a sane human should be doing that at this point.”

“Maybe I’m not sane.”

He chuckled.

“Where are you taking me? Or maybe you want to kill me because you are the real murderer?”

“If I was the murderer, why would I need to kill a detective when I know I can get rid of all the traces and evidence? Besides, I’d rather watch you people try so hard to solve something beyond your human comprehension.”

“I guess you are admitting that you are not human. What exactly are you?”

“Do you really want to know?”

He sped up and I had to hold onto something just so I wouldn’t be thrown in front.

“If you don’t have plans on killing me, then what the hell are you doing?!”

His laughter echoed in the whole car as he turned to a different way. He was running away from the highways, from the crowd. If it turns out he would kill me, then I’d be damned. There is no use of calling anyone at this point. Maybe I can try to fight back. Sure, I can take down multiple men at a time considering my skills, but what I have is nothing but humanly. And this guy, I don’t know which kind he belongs to, but I’m sure there is no way I can outpower him.

“You are still as short-tempered as ever, Anna.”

Anna.

Another person called me that name again.

“I’m not Anna.”

He just chuckled as he drove faster. I can see pine trees at the sides. There are lampposts but I notice every light goes out after we get past it.

“Why do people keep me associating with her? If you have a past with that woman, leave me out of it. And where the hell are you going?”

“I changed my mind. I think I’ll just kill you.”

“What a great mind you have,” I said annoyed.

“What kind of death do you want? Should I let this car jump off the cliff with you?”

His tone made me a bit anxious. I’m not afraid of dying, but I don’t want to die without knowing the truth behind my parents’ death.

“Or maybe you want me to kill you with my own hands—”

I almost knocked my head when the car had an abrupt stop. I looked in front to see if we crashed on something, but what I saw caught me off guard.

The same man with blazing gold eyes is right in front of us, putting the car to stop with his one hand.
