ALPHA’S SECRET TWINS: RISE OF THE HEIRS

Chapter 12 – Shadows at the Border

The forest had gone silent,

Too silent.

No birds.

No wind.

Not even the sound of leaves moving.

Only tension.

Heavy and suffocating.

Alpha Liam stood at the edge of the territory with several wolves behind him, his sharp gaze fixed on the dark trees ahead.

Waiting.

Watching.

Something was there.

He could feel it.

Not weak.

Not careless.

Whoever crossed into his borders knew exactly what they were doing.

And that made them dangerous.

Beside him, Beta Ryan lowered his voice. “We tracked at least six scents.”

“Too few for an attack,” Liam replied calmly.

Ryan frowned. “Scouts?”

“Maybe.”

But Liam didn’t believe that.

Scouts didn’t carry killing intent that thick in the air.

His wolf was restless beneath his skin now, pacing violently.

Protective.

Aggressive.

Because this wasn’t just about territory anymore.

This was about family.

Back at the estate, Lia locked the final window before turning toward the twins.

“No one leaves this house,” she said firmly.

Ethan crossed his arms immediately. “We’re not little kids.”

“You’re still staying inside.”

“We can help.”

“No.”

Frustration flashed across Ethan’s face. “Dad literally trained me for this!”

Lia froze slightly at the word.

Dad.

Ethan had started saying it naturally now.

Without anger.

Without hesitation.

And somehow that terrified her more.

Because it meant Liam was becoming important to them.

Permanent.

Lia swallowed the thought away quickly.

“This isn’t training,” she said quietly. “This is danger.”

Elena stood near the window, unusually tense.

Her eyes remained fixed outside.

Listening.

Feeling.

Then suddenly,

They’re moving.”

Lia’s stomach tightened instantly.

What?”

Elena looked toward the forest.

“They’re getting closer.”

Outside, Liam heard it too.

A branch snapped.

Then another.

Low growls spread through the darkness.

Ryan stepped forward immediately. “They’re surrounding us.”

Liam’s expression hardened.

“Interesting.”

Most wolves feared entering his territory.

These ones didn’t.

That meant either stupidity,

Or confidence.

And Liam hated both.

A figure stepped slowly out from the trees.

Tall.

Young.

Silver eyes glowing faintly in the dark.

The air shifted instantly around him.

Not ordinary.

Not weak.

An Alpha.

The stranger smiled faintly. “So the rumors were true.”

Liam didn’t move. “You’re standing on dangerous ground.”

“So I’ve heard.”

His gaze drifted toward the estate behind them.

Toward the house.

Toward the twins.

“I came to see the heirs for myself.”

Every wolf behind Liam tensed instantly.

Ryan growled low under his breath.

Liam’s voice turned colder.

“You came uninvited.”

“I came curious.”

“That curiosity is about to become fatal.”

The stranger laughed softly.

“You really would kill me over them.”

The dangerous thing?

Liam answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

Silence fell instantly.

Even the wolves behind the stranger seemed unsettled by the certainty in Liam’s voice.

Because he meant it.

Inside the house, Ethan suddenly stood up.

“He’s strong.”

Lia looked at him sharply. “What?”

“I can feel him,” Ethan muttered. “Whoever’s out there… he’s strong.”

Elena’s expression darkened slightly.

“But he’s hiding something.”

A chill ran down Lia’s spine.

“What kind of something?”

Elena slowly turned toward her.

“The kind that smells like blood.”

Outside, the silver-eyed Alpha took another step forward.

“My name is Kaiden Vale,” he said smoothly.

Liam remained unmoved.

“I don’t care.”

Kaiden smirked slightly. “I think you should.”

His silver gaze sharpened.

“Because others are coming.”

The air instantly became colder.

Ryan cursed quietly under his breath.

Liam’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Explain.”

Kaiden tilted his head slightly.

“There are whispers spreading through every territory now.” His gaze shifted toward the estate again. “About twins born from a broken mate bond.”

Liam’s jaw tightened.

Damn it.

The prophecy rumors.

Someone leaked it.

Kaiden continued calmly,

“And once powerful Alphas hear about heirs with rare bloodlines…”

His smile faded slightly.

“They stop asking politely.”

Back inside, Lia paced anxiously.

Every instinct screamed at her to run again.

Take the twins.

Disappear.

Before this world swallowed them whole.

But deep down,

She already knew it was too late.

They had been found.

Suddenly,

The front door opened.

Liam walked inside.

The room shifted immediately the moment he entered.

Ethan stood quickly. “What’s happening?”

Liam’s gaze moved toward Lia first.

Always her first.

“There’s a problem.”

Her heart dropped. “How bad?”

His silence answered enough.

Elena stepped closer. “They know about us.”

Liam looked at her carefully. “Yes.”

Ethan frowned. “Who?”

“Other territories,” Liam answered. “Other Alphas.”

Lia felt cold all over.

“No…”

Liam stepped closer to her, lowering his voice slightly.

“I won’t let anyone touch this family.”

Family.

The word hit her harder than it should have.

Because he meant it now.

Completely.

And somehow.

That made her even more afraid.

Ethan looked between them suspiciously.

“You’re doing that thing again.”

Lia blinked. “What thing?”

“The intense staring.”

Elena sighed softly. “It’s worse when they’re worried.”

Liam actually looked amused for half a second.

Lia narrowed her eyes. “This is not the time.”

“Agreed,” Liam replied calmly.

But his gaze lingered on her a second too long.

And she noticed.

Unfortunately.

Her heart noticed too.

A loud howl suddenly echoed from outside.

Close.

Too close.

Every wolf in the room froze instantly.

Ryan burst through the door.

“They crossed the eastern border!”

Liam moved immediately.

“Stay inside,” he ordered sharply.

“No chance,” Ethan argued.

Liam’s Alpha aura slammed through the room instantly.

“Inside.”

Ethan stiffened.

Even Lia felt the force of the command.

Powerful.

Absolute.

Dangerous.

But beneath all of it—

Fear.

Liam was afraid.

Not for himself.

For them.

As Liam turned to leave again, Lia grabbed his arm suddenly.

He looked back immediately.

“Be careful,” she whispered.

Something softened in his eyes.

Only briefly.

Then his hand covered hers for one quick second.

Warm.

Steady.

“I always am.”

But Lia’s heart twisted painfully.

Because deep down,

She had a horrible feeling that peace had already ended.

And this time…

The danger wasn’t just coming for Liam.

It was coming for all of them.
