Chapter 5

Like Moth Following the Flame

I rested my back on the headboard of the bed. I let the doctors examine me as my head remained lowered. My eyes were fixed on my fidgeting fingers. I just woke up after the attack. After Vicki shot me. And I… saved Lane.

It’s still a big question in my head that I saved Lane. I came here for his death but why on earth did I thought of saving him? I never had the guts to raise my head until I felt a familiar presence enter the room.

I slowly raised my gaze to confirm the assumption in my head. I froze the moment I saw Vicki. I swallowed the lump on my throat as I followed her every move. She’s dressed in a nurse’s uniform and naturally attended to the doctors as she carried a platter of medicine.

And just behind Vicki, a saw a pair of cold and intriguing eyes. I hitched my breath as I stared at Lane’s deep eyes. I couldn’t even last more than five seconds adoring his eyes when I looked away. I felt the shivers on my spine with just that cold look of Lane.

It took a while before the doctors went outside to discuss something with Lane. And in an instant, it was just me and Vicki in the same room.

“What are you doing here?” I started.

“I’m not here to explain my presence and don’t even try to explain why you saved that dog!” she hissed at me.

I sighed. I knew it. She was really the one who shot me. I gritted my teeth when Vicki started to give me some pills. It was the same pills that prevented my Marking with Lane.

“I told you to not find me, Vicki.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll immediately leave once I’ll tell you some important things. One, the organization has officially abandoned you. The moment we saw you save Lane Emerson, you were done. They’re chasing after you. Two, you’re not safe anymore. Reason why I’m giving you these pills. You’ll have to stay here for a while. Three, we attacked that day because your mate is on the blacklist. The reason? I don’t know. Your mate is doing some bad shit, get me?”

I nodded slowly trying to process everything she said. I bit my lower lip slowly digesting the information Vicki gave me. I was right. The organization has abandoned me. And Lane is in the blacklist? How come? I don’t know why everything just went south.

“Here,”

My brows furrowed as Vicki handed me a small bottle.

“What is this, Vicki?” I asked nervously as I got a hint what’s inside this bottle.

“You want him dead, right? Poison him.”

I touched the tiny cold bottle. It has been already three days since I woke up. And I haven’t got the chance to talk to Lane. My eyes watched the scene below me. I stood up from my seat when I saw Lane entered the main gates. I’m now here in their main base. Eventually, the evacuation was successful.

I was sure of my decision. I was persistent of killing him! It should be easy but why am I feeling this way? I got up from bed and saw that lunch was already served.

I dipped my steak on the sauce when I noticed how my hand was shaking. I stopped from eating and just took a glass of water when my fingers trembled and the water spilled on my food.

“Shit!”

I stood up from my table and I almost fell when my knees weakly shivered every step I took. I felt like I was out of air. My body was heating up and I could feel the beads of sweat on my forehead.

“What the hell is happening?”

I moan of pain escaped my lips when I felt a burning sensation on my right hip. I ran to the bathroom. I saw my reflection on the mirror, sweating, trembling, heating up, and pale.

I groaned when I felt a painful burning sensation on my hip but there was another feeling that enveloped it making my heart sunk to my stomach.

Pleasure.

“No…” I said breathily.

I slowly took off my jeans and there, my heartbeat rose to the heavens as I saw a mark. The Marking is happening.

“No, no, no, no,”

I immediately went to my pills. I should have known! Damn it! I took three of the pills and gulped it. But it didn’t even take a second when I vomited it out of my mouth.

No.

I breathed in heavily as I went outside of my bathroom. As soon as I saw the glass of water, already a quarter left. I gulped on the pill again and quickly drank the water like my life depends on it. It felt like it wasn’t enough so I had to eat the remaining steak, in hopes of the pill to finally drown on my stomach.

I swallowed the last piece of steak when I felt my body froze. I heard the door slammed open. I slowly turned my gaze to the door and there, I saw Lane that reflected the same expression as me.

I swallowed the lump on my throat as he strode to my direction. He pinned me on the wall as I felt his hot heavy breathing on my neck.

“Lane…”

“Take off your jeans,” his voice was hoarse.

My eyes widened and I immediately knew why he wants me to take off my jeans. His sleepy eyes met mine. I saw him look at the sweat on my forehead like he knew what was happening.

“I’m not taking it off.”

“Sette, please.”

“No.”

“I’m just going to confirm… something.”

I shook my head as my eyes shut. My knees were already shaking.

“Leave my room, Lane.”

“Then explain to me what’s happening.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Damn,” he whispered.

I tried to move away but his hold on my wrists were too strong.

“Lane,” I gave him my warning tone.

“Just… take off your jeans.”

I shook my head.

“Get out.”

His deep set of eyes glared at me. And as every patience he had is slowly ripping, he harshly lowered the right portion of my jeans. I tried to push him but he was stronger. He knew where the mark is so that means, he’s Marking too.

My heart stopped as we both saw my soft skin, untouched, no sign of any marking. I sighed in respite. I pushed him away as I pulled up my jeans. Though, shocked that my mark was gone.

When I faced him, he was just stunned. I gritted my teeth as guilt slowly appeared on his beautiful face.

“I thought you were—”

“What?!” my voice raised.

He shook his head and diverted his eyes.

“I’m… I’m sorry. I was wrong.”

Did he actually think that I was his mate? My body shivered at that question. Why would he come here then? Why would he want to see my hip then?

“Leave, Lane.”

He nodded. He didn’t move so I went to the door and opened it.

“Leave, now.”

He slowly headed to my direction. I couldn’t breathe properly when he was just five inches away from me. He stopped from his footsteps and raised his gaze slowly to look at my scared eyes.

My eyes, though threatening to look away, indulged in his eyes that held the dark moon. For a moment, I felt like I was hypnotized that I felt a tingle through my spine that hit my brain.

And before I could even look away, he did it first. I bit my cheeks when I felt my body heating up.

Oh no. This is not the right time. I gritted my teeth harshly. I can’t even look away from him! He was like a magnet. He’s like fire and I’m just a mere fly! I hitched my breath when he locked his eyes on mine. His eyes then traveled to my eyes then down to my nose and down to my lips.

And when he took a step outside of my room, like a moth following the flame, I snaked my hand around his nape, pulling him closer for a hot kiss. I felt his arms around my waist and the next thing I heard was the door shutting.
