ARIA POV

I sat at a secluded corner table on the ground floor of the library, staring at my phone screen with a racing heart.

A warm, deep flush crept up my neck, turning my cheeks bright pink. I read the latest text message from "Blake" over and over again until the words blurred together.

[(310) 555-0149]: Give me a name, baby. I promise you, I’m going to teach your stepbrother a lesson he’ll never forget.

"Oh my gosh," I murmured softly to myself, pressing my warm palms against my face. A small, giddy smile spread across my lips. "How can someone be so protective? He's so sweet... so incredibly sweet."

To think that Crestwood's golden boy, the star captain of the hockey team, was sitting somewhere on this campus actually offering to fight my bully for me made my chest swell with a dangerous kind of hope. For the first time in months, I felt like I had someone in my corner, someone strong who actually cared about my feelings.

I gently typed back my reply, hiding my face behind my hair.

[Secret Girl]: You don't have to fight him for me, Captain. Just knowing you care is more than enough. I'll handle him.

I sent the message, locked my phone, and carefully slid it into my backpack. I took a deep breath, trying to smooth down my messy sweater before heading out of the library for my next class.

Unfortunately, my high spirits were completely crushed the moment I stepped into the large lecture hall for Science and Economics.

Jaxon was already there, sitting in the back row with his usual crew. Blake was leaning against the desk beside him, while Chloe sat on Jaxon's left, twirling a strand of her blonde hair.

The second I walked down the carpeted aisle looking for an empty seat near the front, Jaxon’s icy gray eyes locked onto me. A dark, arrogant smirk spread across his handsome face.

"Hey, look, everyone! The human bowling ball made it to class!" Jaxon announced in a loud, clear voice that carried across the room.

A wave of snickers and quiet laughter rippled through the students.

I kept my head down, my knuckles turning white around the straps of my backpack. I quickly pulled out a chair near the front window, sitting down as fast as I could. But Jaxon wasn't finished.

Throughout the entire first half of the lecture, he made it his personal mission to make my life a living nightmare. Every time Professor Thomas turned his back to write on the whiteboard, Jaxon would crumble up small pieces of paper and flick them at the back of my head.

Clack. A paper ball hit my shoulder.

Clack. Another one bounced off my dark hair.

"Oops, missed the target," Chloe giggled softly behind me.

"Don't worry, she's a big target, hard to miss," Jaxon whispered back loud enough for the two rows around us to hear.

More giggles followed. I bit the inside of my cheek so hard I tasted copper, squeezing my pen until my fingers went numb. I stared straight at the whiteboard, refusing to turn around, refusing to let him see the hot tears burning behind my eyelids. Just survive the hour, I told myself. Just survive without causing any trouble.

Professor Thomas finally turned around, tapping his wooden pointer against the desk to restore order. The room fell quiet.

"Alright, settle down, everyone," Professor Thomas said, adjusting his glasses as he looked over the classroom. "Before we dismiss today, I have an important announcement regarding your major term project for this semester."

He cleared his throat, holding up a stack of thick syllabus sheets.

"This will be an intensive, hands-on scientific research and economic analysis project," the professor explained. "It counts for fifty percent of your final grade. Because of the heavy workload, you will be working in pairs."

A loud murmur of excitement spread through the room as students immediately turned to look at their best friends. Chloe reached over to grab Jaxon's arm, while Blake leaned over to slap Jaxon's shoulder.

"Now, settle down," Professor Thomas interrupted, raising his hand. "To ensure fairness and force you out of your comfort zones, I have already selected one official pair myself based on midterm standings. The rest of you may pick your own partners."

Professor Thomas picked up his clipboard, scanning the paper line by line.

"The pair I have assigned will be working on the advanced data tracking module," the professor stated firmly, looking up over the rim of his glasses. "Jaxon and Aria Hayes."

The entire lecture hall went dead, suffocatingly silent.

My heart instantly stopped beating. The blood drained completely from my face, leaving me cold and lightheaded.

Beside me, Chloe gasped in horror. Jaxon froze in his seat, his arrogant smile vanishing in a split second, replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated rage.

"Wait, Professor! You can't be serious!" Jaxon shouted, slamming his hand down on his wooden desk as he stood up. "I am not working with her!"

"My decision is final, Mr. Hayes," Professor Thomas said sternly, without breaking eye contact. "You two scored at the opposite ends of the last assessment, and this pairing will benefit both of your academic standing. You will work together, or you will both fail this course."

I sat frozen in my chair, staring at the front of the classroom in utter, paralyzing shock. My mind raced in circles as Jaxon's furious glare burned into the back of my neck like a branding iron.

What? I thought, my throat tightening so hard I could barely breathe. I'm being paired with my worst enemy?

ARIA POV“Don't flatter yourself, Vance. Nothing happened last night."I spat the words out the moment Aria stepped into the sunlit kitchen, my voice dripping with as much icy venom as I could muster.I stood by the marble island, clad in my usual sharp black button-down and trousers, leaning casually against the counter with a steaming mug of black coffee in my hand. On the outside, I looked completely composed, relaxed, and in control. But on the inside, my mind was a chaotic mess.Every time I closed my eyes, I didn't see my cold, calculated plans or the image of my vintage Ducati. I saw Aria's soft dark eyes in the flash of lightning. I felt the steady, reassuring warmth of her hands wrapped around mine, guiding me out of the suffocating dark while I choked like a pathetic coward on the floor. It made my stomach twist in knots. I hated her for seeing me like that. I hated her even more for not using it against me.Aria froze near the doorway, her hand lingering on her backpack str

JAXON POV“What the hell was the meaning of that stunt you pulled out there today, Blake?!"I cornered Blake against the brick wall of the campus gymnasium, my hands gripping the collar of his athletic jacket so hard my knuckles turned white. The rain was pouring down around us, but I didn't care. My blood was boiling.Blake just laughed, casually pushing my hands off his jacket and smoothing down his shirt with a lazy, arrogant grin."Relax, Jax. I was just playing my part," Blake said smoothly, leaning against the wall. "To win your million-dollar bet and get that Ducati, I have to make her fall completely in love with me. And to do that, I needed to earn her absolute trust. Stepping in between you two in the library was the easiest way to make her think I'm her white knight.""I told you to break her heart, Reed, not steal my joy!" I snapped, my jaw locked tight as I glared at him. "I wanted to watch her kneel. I wanted to see her utterly humiliated on that floor for everyone to se

ARIA POV“Did she actually think a guy like Blake Reed would ever look at someone like her? What a desperate pig!"A sharp, cruel voice echoed across the crowded university hallway, shattering the last remaining pieces of my fragile confidence. The video playing on my phone screen wasn't just the clip of me on my knees in the library. Someone had maliciously edited it. Worse than that, they had warped it using obnoxious, humiliating video filters, adding giant cartoon clown tears to my face, sparkling gold coins raining down around me with every sob to mock my mother's marriage, and flashing text overlays calling me a “desperate gold-digger” and a “pathological slut trying to seduce Blake and cause a fight between two best friends.”The comments section was moving at a blinding, terrifying speed. Hundreds of students from across Crestwood University were tearing me apart piece by piece, accusing me of throwing myself at Blake just to climb social ladders."Look at her pretending she d

Jaxon's ruthless command echoed off the high ceiling of the library, sharp and cold as a blade.I stood frozen against the wooden bookshelf, my chest heaving in fast, shallow breaths. The humiliation was so heavy, so thick, that it felt like an anchor pulling me straight down into the dirt.Kneel.My knees trembled violently. Tears of pure, agonizing shame spilled hot over my eyelashes, burning my cheeks. I whispered under my breath, my hands trembling as I hugged my notebook tightly against my chest. My heart was doing violent backflips against my ribs. My cheeks felt like they were literally on fire, glowing a deep, unshakeable pink. I sat alone at the library table, staring at the empty chair across from me, completely unable to wipe the silly, giddy grin off my face."What on earth just happened?" I murmured to myself, leaning my hot forehead against the wooden table. "He walked up to the real me. Not the anonymous texter. Not a profile picture. He saw me sitting here, came over, and offered to tutor me!"It felt like a sweet, incredible dream. For months, I had been watching him from the top row of the ice rink, feeling completely invisible, convinced that a guy like Blake would never notice a girl like me. And now he noticed me. BLAKE POV“You've got to be kidding me," I breathed, my eyes wide as Jaxon threw back the heavy canvas sheet in the center of his private three-car garage.Sitting before us was the matte-black, custom 1969 vintage Ducati motorcycle. The polished chrome detail gleamed under the soft overhead lights, and the rich smell of leather, gasoline, and expensive polish filled the room. I had been begging Jaxon to sell me this exact bike since our freshman year, but the stubborn bastard had always refused, guarding it like a sacred family treasure.I looked from the motorcycle over to Jaxon, who was leaning casually against the hood of his sports car, sipping iced bourbon with a deadpan look on his face."I thought you were joking earlier, Jax," I said, a dry laugh escaping my throat. "You're really putting this on the line?""I never joke about something like this, Blake," Jaxon replied coldly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Especially not with my precious bike."I stared at the sleek machin
