Beneath the Foundation

last update publish date: 2026-10-20 21:32:00

The foundation archives occupied the oldest part of the Veyra Group headquarters.

Unlike the upper floors, with their glass walls and polished metal, the archive level had been built beneath the original building. Its corridors were narrow, its ceilings low, and its walls reinforced with concrete thick enough to withstand an explosion.

Dario Veyra walked ahead of Elena with two security officers behind him.

“You are making a mistake,” he said.

Elena followed at an even pace. “You said that when I ordered the internal audit.”

“And when you questioned Victor.”

“And when I sat in the Vice-Chairwoman’s seat.”

Dario stopped near a steel door. “This archive contains confidential agreements dating back forty years. Some involve governments, banks, and private security firms. If you expose them without understanding their consequences, you could destroy this company.”

Elena looked at the door. “If those agreements are legitimate, they will survive scrutiny.”

Adrian stood at her side, scanning the corridor.

The security chief entered a code. The lock rejected it.

He tried again.

A red light blinked above the keypad.

“Access denied,” he said.

Dario reached for the panel. “The system has been changed.”

Elena looked at him. “When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who does?”

Dario did not answer.

Adrian examined the keypad. “Someone disabled the chairman’s access.”

“Can you open it?” Elena asked.

“Eventually.”

“How long?”

“Five minutes.”

“We do not have five minutes.”

She turned to the security chief. “Bring the emergency access kit.”

Dario’s face tightened. “You cannot authorize forced entry into the foundation archive.”

“I already have.”

“Elena—”

She faced him. “A sniper attacked me in the boardroom. Someone accessed the restricted server using my credentials. An armed operative entered the executive floor carrying photographs of my daughter. The person behind this operation has now taken control of an internal archive.”

Her voice remained controlled, but every word struck the corridor like a hammer.

“If you still believe this is a matter of company procedure, you are either dangerously naïve or directly involved.”

Dario stared at her.

Adrian’s hand rested near his weapon.

The chairman looked away first.

The emergency kit arrived. Within moments, the security team bypassed the damaged lock. The steel door groaned open.

Cold air spilled into the corridor.

Inside, rows of metal cabinets stretched into darkness. A single lamp hung from the ceiling, flickering above a central table. Dust covered most of the shelves, but the floor showed fresh footprints leading toward the back of the room.

Elena entered first.

Adrian stopped her with one hand.

“Wait.”

He crouched and examined the marks. “Someone was here recently.”

Dario remained near the doorway. “The archives are accessed every day.”

“Not this section,” the security chief replied. “The old ownership records are restricted.”

Elena moved toward the footprints. “Where do they lead?”

The trail ended at a wall of cabinets.

Adrian searched the floor and found a thin black wire running beneath the bottom shelf.

“Do not touch it,” he said.

The security team brought out a scanner. A technician passed it over the wire.

“Low-voltage power line,” she said. “It is connected to something behind the cabinets.”

Adrian looked at Dario. “What is behind the wall?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why does it have power?”

Dario’s expression remained rigid.

Elena approached the cabinet marked FOUNDATION TRANSFERS. She pulled at its handle.

It did not move.

The security chief inspected the lock and shook his head. “The cabinet is sealed into the floor.”

Adrian ran his fingers along the metal frame. “There is a release mechanism.”

“Where?”

He looked at the wall behind it.

Elena understood. She searched the nearest shelves until she found an old brass plaque bearing the Veyra family crest. When she pressed the center of the crest, the cabinet released with a heavy click.

The entire row slid sideways.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Dario’s face went pale.

Elena looked at him. “You said there was nothing behind the wall.”

“I was not aware of this passage.”

“That is difficult to believe.”

“It was built before I became chairman.”

“Then who built it?”

Dario said nothing.

Adrian entered the passage with his weapon drawn. Elena followed, and Dario had no choice but to come behind them.

The hidden corridor led to a small room beneath the foundation. Unlike the archive, it was clean and modern. A desk stood against one wall. Three monitors were mounted above it, all displaying the company’s internal security network.

The screens showed the boardroom, the executive elevators, the parking level, and the residence where Lily was being protected.

Elena stopped breathing for a moment.

Someone had been watching them.

Not from outside the building.

From beneath it.

On the desk lay a collection of files. Each had been arranged by name.

VICTOR HALE.

DARIO VEYRA.

ELENA MARQUEZ.

ADRIAN VALE.

LILY.

Adrian saw the last folder and moved toward it.

Elena caught his wrist. “Wait.”

His eyes were fixed on the name.

“Someone wants us to find these,” she said.

“Or they were collecting information about her.”

“We examine everything before touching it.”

Adrian did not like the answer, but he released the folder.

The security technician checked the room for traps. After confirming that the desk was safe, Elena opened the file marked with her name.

Inside were copies of her employment records, travel documents, photographs, medical reports, and private messages. Some had been obtained recently. Others were years old.

At the bottom was a single page printed on heavy white paper.

ELENA MARQUEZ WAS NOT SELECTED FOR THE VICE-CHAIRWOMANSHIP.

SHE WAS POSITIONED FOR IT.

Elena read the sentence twice.

“What does that mean?” Adrian asked.

She turned the page over.

A diagram had been drawn on the back. It showed the structure of the Veyra Group, several syndicate branches, and a line connecting Elena’s name to a European holding company.

The company was called Orpheus Strategic Holdings.

Dario finally spoke.

“No.”

Elena looked at him. “You know that name.”

“I know of it.”

“Who are they?”

“They are investors.”

“Investors do not build surveillance rooms beneath corporate foundations.”

Dario’s jaw tightened. “Orpheus owns interests in several international security firms. They have influence in transport, communications, and private intelligence.”

“And their connection to you?”

“None.”

Adrian opened the file marked with Dario’s name. Inside was a photograph of the chairman meeting a silver-haired woman outside a hotel in Geneva.

Dario saw the image and stepped backward.

Elena studied the photograph. “Who is she?”

“I don’t know.”

“You were standing beside her.”

“That picture was taken years ago.”

“Answer the question.”

Dario looked at the monitors showing Lily’s residence.

“She is called Dr. Helena Voss.”

Adrian’s voice became dangerously quiet. “The European syndicate’s strategist.”

Dario did not deny it.

Elena closed the file.

“Why was she meeting you?”

“She wanted access to our logistics network.”

“Did you give it to her?”

“No.”

Adrian struck the desk with his palm. The monitors shook.

“You are lying.”

Dario flinched but held his ground. “I gave her information. Not operational intelligence. Financial projections. Market forecasts. Nothing that could endanger anyone.”

“Victor’s leak,” Elena said. “The transport schedules. The frozen accounts.”

Dario looked at her.

“I did not know they would use the information that way.”

“You did not ask.”

“I was trying to protect the company.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

A faint sound came from one of the monitors.

A signal had activated.

The image of Lily’s residence disappeared, replaced by a black screen. White text slowly appeared.

YOU HAVE FOUND THE ROOM.

A second line followed.

NOW FIND THE BETRAYAL.

The speakers came alive with the same calm female voice from the phone.

“Good evening, Elena.”

Adrian drew his weapon and aimed it at the monitors.

The woman continued, “You were always more intelligent than they expected. That is why they placed you at the table.”

Elena stared at the screen. “Dr. Voss.”

“Names are useful only when they frighten people.”

“Where is Lily?”

“Safe. For now.”

Adrian stepped toward the monitor. “If you go near her—”

“Your devotion is admirable, Adrian. It is also exploitable.”

Elena’s hands curled into fists. “What do you want?”

“To know whether you will trust the truth when it destroys the people standing beside you.”

The screen went dark.

A printer in the corner suddenly activated.

One page emerged.

Elena took it.

It contained a single photograph of Adrian meeting a man outside a private airfield. The date was three months earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

ASK HIM WHAT HE PROMISED.

Elena slowly turned toward Adrian.

For the first time since the attack began, he looked uncertain.

Not afraid.

Uncertain.

And beneath the foundation, surrounded by secrets collected by an invisible enemy, Elena realized that the next betrayal might not come from the company.

It might come from the man she trusted most.

The boardroom doors were locked from the inside.Elena had ordered it before the security team finished removing the broken glass. No one was permitted to leave—not the directors, not the assistants, and not even the legal advisers who had been summoned after the attack. The city continued to move beyond the shattered windows, but inside the room, time had narrowed to the people seated around the table. And the information they were hiding.Adrian stood near the eastern wall, speaking quietly with the security chief. Two guards remained outside the doors while another examined the bullet lodged in the steel frame. The sniper had escaped, but the attack had left behind enough evidence to expose a larger operation.Elena opened the first folder.“Three weeks ago,” she said, “our European contacts received a copy of the South Harbor transport schedule. Two days later, one of our warehouses was raided.”Dario

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Official Seat

By eight o’clock in the morning, the boardroom had already become a battlefield.Elena stood before the glass wall overlooking the city, her reflection sharp against the pale gold of sunrise. Below, traffic crawled through the streets, unaware that three floors above, powerful men and women were preparing to decide whether she belonged among them.On the table behind her lay the documents confirming her appointment as Vice-Chairwoman of the Veyra Group. The title was official. The danger was not.“Your security team is in position,” Adrian said.He stood near the closed doors, dressed in a dark suit without a tie. He looked calm to anyone who did not know him. Elena knew better. His stillness was the kind that came before violence. She turned toward him. “How many?”“Six inside the building. Four on the adjacent rooftops. Two in the parking structure.”“You sound disappoint

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Sovereign’s Judgment

The heavy velvet box sat on the scarred mahogany table, its golden crest catching the flickering light from the burning building across the street. The federal courier bowed once more before retreating back into the secure elevator line, leaving a tense silence behind. Outside the shattered windows, the freezing rain poured into the corporate penthouse, but no one in the room felt the cold.Adrian stepped forward, his long, tattooed fingers sweeping over the velvet lid. With a fluid click, the lock snapped open, revealing a heavily encrypted, military-grade satellite drive."Marcus, interface it," Adrian commanded, his deep voice carrying the flat, lethal finality of a sovereign who had just conquered a warzone.Marcus rushed to the secondary terminal, his hands flying across the console. Within seconds, the screen bypassed the encryption, translating the raw data into a shimmering, high-resolution underground map of the city’s international harbor ports.

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Human Shield

The sharp, high-velocity crack of the sniper bullet echoing through the ninety-story penthouse boardroom was instantly followed by the deafening sound of shattering glass. The bulletproof windows, designed to withstand standard military-grade munitions, had been punctured by an armor-piercing round that left a web of fractures across the massive panels. Shards of crystal rained down on the mahogany table, dancing under the harsh fluorescent lights."Down!" Adrian roared. Before the corporate directors or the elite guards could even react to the sudden breach, Adrian’s towering frame blurred through the air. He did not pull Elena away from the terminal, nor did he drag her to the secure escape chute behind the high-backed leather chairs. He knew with an absolute, chilling certainty that if Elena stepped away from the console now, the global trade embargo would fail, the firewall would close, and Lily’s bounty would remain an active beacon for every assassin
