THE PATERNITY PUZZLE

last update Last Updated: 2025-05-27 01:57:15

Eva’s POV

Time moves slowly when you’re waiting for something. But when you don’t know what you’re waiting for, it moves even slower.

The weeks after the hospital visit passed in a quiet blur. Henry had been the perfect husband, in every sense of the word. Loving. Attentive. Always a step ahead of my needs, as if he’d memorized my body’s language better than I had.

He was thrilled about the pregnancy.

The moment the doctor smiled at us with the words “You’re about six weeks along,” something changed in his eyes. It was like a dream he didn’t realize he had been holding onto had finally come to life. He pulled me into his arms right there in the hospital corridor, whispering thank you again and again like I had given him something more sacred than life itself.

At that moment, I wished I felt the same.

And I did. In parts.

But behind every heartbeat, behind every tender kiss and warm rub on my belly, was a question I couldn’t stop hearing in my mind.

Whose child was this?

Mine, yes. But

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    AN UNEXPECTED STORM

Eva’s POVIt had been almost three weeks since I last heard from Lucas. At first, I thought it was temporary. That he just needed time. I told myself he was grieving. That he would come back when he was ready. But now, it felt permanent. His silence had wrapped itself around my days like a fog I couldn’t escape. I stopped waiting for his messages. Stopped hoping to see his name flash across my phone screen. But even as I tried to convince myself I was letting go, a part of me still listened for a vibration in the night. Still paused every time my phone lit up.But nothing ever came. And then something else began to change. It started with the exhaustion. A kind of tiredness I couldn’t shake off no matter how long I slept. I’d wake up and still feel like I hadn’t rested. At first, I blamed it on stress. The emotional toll of everything that had happened. Then came the dizziness. Random spells of light-headedness that hit me when I stood up too fast or turned too quickly. Once, I nearly

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    REBOUND

Eva’s POVIt had been four days.Four long, dragging, silent days.Since the news of Antonia’s miscarriage, my chest hadn’t stopped feeling tight. Not from guilt—no, I’d long made peace with the idea that guilt wasn’t something I let myself carry when it came to Lucas—but from something deeper. Like something was suddenly broken between us.I hadn’t seen Lucas since that day. I hadn’t even spoken to him. I only sent a short message the morning after, a simple: “I’m sorry about the loss. Take all the time you need. I’ll be here when you’re ready.”He hadn’t replied. And even though a part of me understood—he was grieving, they both were, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of his absence. It was like someone had pressed pause on the only thing that made my world feel real.Henry, in his usual soft way, had been quiet too. Not because he suspected anything, but because he was the kind of man who never needed to fill the space with too much. He’d kiss my forehead before going to work, le

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    ECHOES OF GRIEF

Lucas’s POV The morning light seeped through the half-open blinds, streaking across the floor in quiet patterns. I lay on my side of the bed, staring at the ceiling, numb. The events of yesterday wouldn’t stop replaying in my mind—Antonia’s face when she told me, her voice cracking under the weight of the loss neither of us saw coming. It was still too surreal, like a heavy fog had wrapped itself around my body and refused to let go.A baby.My son. Gone.I didn’t know I could mourn something I never held. But the ache was real. Heavy. Sharp. And inescapable.I glanced to my left.Antonia was asleep, curled away from me, her frame barely moving under the covers. There were no words I could offer her now. Nothing I could say would make up for my absence yesterday, even though she hadn’t asked where I had been. Maybe she didn’t want to know. Maybe she assumed I’d been at work or in a meeting. Either way, she hadn’t questioned it, and I wasn’t about to open that door.I got up quietly

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    GRIEF AND GUILT

Lucas’s POVThe tires screeched slightly as I pulled into the clinic’s parking lot. I hadn’t even waited for the car to come to a full stop before I was out, slamming the door behind me. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.Antonia had sounded strange on the phone. Her voice had been quiet, weak, not her usual sharp and controlled tone.Eva’s perfume still lingered on me. My shirt was wrinkled from our passionate encounter. My thoughts, my body, my mind—all were still trying to catch up. The guilt was crawling up my spine like ice.But none of that mattered now.I rushed through the automatic glass doors. The clinic was small, quiet, and smelled of antiseptic and anxiety. A nurse at the front desk looked up.“Lucas…” I heard my name, faint but urgent. My head turned. Antonia stood a few feet away near a row of blue plastic chairs, her arms wrapped around herself, her face pale. She looked nothing like the woman I left behind yesterday. Her shoulders sagged, her
