(VINCENZO'S POV)

I noticed Marianna had been unusually quiet lately. Her eyes, normally bright and engaged, now seemed distant, fixed on something beyond my reach. She sat across from me in my office, shoulders slightly hunched, fingers idly tracing patterns on the armrest.

"You've barely said two words since you arrived," I said, breaking the silence. "What's going on?"

She looked up, startled, as if I'd interrupted a private conversation she was having with herself. "Nothing important, Vin."

"We both know that's not true." I leaned forward.

Her lips pressed into a thin line. "Why bother?

As I was about to ask her what was wrong, I heard her grandfather ask

“Who's there?”

I noticed Marianna wipe her finger across her face in a breeze and smiled as though she was hiding something as she pushed the door open.

I'm pretty sure she is hiding something.

Edward received us in his study, his frame more stooped than I remembered. When he spotted Marianna, his weathered face transformed.

  • BOUND TO LOVE MY ENEMY   CHAPTER 68 — WHAT YOU MEAN TO ME

(VINCENZO'S POV) I carried Marianna carefully in my arms, cradling her against my chest as we left the sterile hospital corridors behind. The discharge papers crinkled in my jacket pocket, but all I could focus on was the weight of her in my arms and the way she fit perfectly against me. When we reached the car, I gently settled her into the passenger seat, my hands lingering longer than necessary as I buckled her seatbelt."Vin, I'm perfectly fine now," she scolded, though her voice still carried that slight tremor that betrayed her exhaustion. "You can let go of me."But I couldn't. The thought of releasing her, of not having her within arm's reach, sent a cold panic through my veins. I refused to step back, my hand still resting on the car door frame, effectively caging her in."Don't talk," I commanded, starting the engine with more force than necessary. "Just rest."But Marianna, stubborn as always, shook her head with determination. "No, you need to hear this, Vincenzo. You

  • BOUND TO LOVE MY ENEMY   CHAPTER 67 — GAME PIECE IN PLACE

(NICCOLÒ'S POV) The guard shifted nervously in the chair, sweat beading on his forehead."You had one job, Marco," I said, circling him slowly. "One simple job.""Boss, I can explain—""Explain?" I stopped directly in front of him. "You let a woman slip through your fingers. A woman.""She had a driver, and when we tried to……""Amateur." I drew my gun. "Completely amateur.""Please, boss, if you just listen……."The trigger pulled back with a soft click. Marco crumpled to the floor.I holstered the gun and reached for my phone. Maybe that hitman Sophia used, despite his failure, could be convinced to try again."Tony," I said when my new assistant answered. "I need an update on those mercenary contacts.""Yes, sir. I've been reaching out to some mafia connections. They can link us to professionals.""Find someone. Anyone. Get back to me within the hour.""Understood, sir."I stepped outside and froze. Charlotte stood beside her BMW, her stiletto heel against the tyresShe spotted me

  • BOUND TO LOVE MY ENEMY   CHAPTER 66 — WHAT IN THE WORLD?

(MARIANNA'S POV) A few hours earlier, I sat staring at nothing, my mind reeling. ‘Who is Sophia's real father? Did dad also know about it?’The questions burned through me as I remembered Grandfather's face crumble with heartbreak. Twenty-two years of believing she was his blood, and now this. The memory hit me like a sledgehammer. I vividly remembered St. Mary's Hospital. Where Sophia was born a few days before my mother passed away. I'd spent my entire life believing Mother's death was connected to giving birth to Sophia. But what if it wasn't? What if everything was a lie designed to bring that woman into our lives?Rage coursed through my veins, hot and consuming."Take me to St. Mary's Hospital," I told the driver, my voice sharp though I contained fury.By the time we arrived, my hands were shaking. I stepped out of the car and froze at the entrance. Everything looked exactly the same as it did twenty-two years ago. Then, I was seven years old, watching them wheel Mother's

  • BOUND TO LOVE MY ENEMY   CHAPTER 65 — FEAR AND FURY

(VINCENZO'S POV) ‘Marianna? Car crash? It's not possible.’ The words kept repeating in my mind like a broken record. ‘She can't be dead.’I snatched the tablet from the floor, studying the mangled wreckage again. My hands shook as I zoomed in on the image, searching for any detail that might tell me this was all a mistake. The car was completely destroyed, metal twisted into unrecognizable shapes, glass scattered across the asphalt like deadly confetti. But something felt wrong. "Anna, get my car ready. Now!" I barked, already moving toward the door."Sir, should I……""Just do it!" My voice cracked with an emotion I couldn't name. Fear? Rage? Both clawed at my chest like wild animals. The drive to the crash scene felt endless. Every red light, every slow-moving vehicle made my blood pressure spike higher. My knuckles were white against the steering wheel as I weaved through traffic, my mind racing between disbelief and mounting fury. “What must have happened that led to this?’ I t

  • BOUND TO LOVE MY ENEMY   CHAPTER 63 — CAUGHT BETWEEN WORLDS

(MARIANNA'S POV) I woke to a pounding in my skull and bile rising in my throat. The morning light streaming through my curtains felt like daggers in my eyes. I barely made it to the bathroom, my legs unsteady beneath me as I collapsed before the toilet and emptied what little remained in my stomach from the night before."Are you okay?"I jerked my head up, immediately regretting the sudden movement. Leo stood in the doorway of my bathroom, concern etched on his face. Or was it something else? My mind felt foggy, struggling to put pieces together."You should have knocked," I managed to say, reaching for a towel to wipe my mouth."I'm sorry," Leo said, stepping into the bathroom. "I didn't know you were awake. I came to check on you—you've been out cold since we got back from the masquerade."I pushed myself to my feet, gripping the edge of the sink for support. "What happened last night?" I asked, watching Leo's reflection in the mirror. Something felt off, but I couldn't place it.
