Chapter 1 No Choice

작가: Hedgebud
Giselle fell silent.

Since I was young, I knew I had an older sister.

Giselle left home when she was eighteen. She believed our family was too poor to give her the life she wanted, so she ran away with a wealthy man and became his mistress.

…

When I was in school, my classmates often asked me about my sister.

"Is it true your sister is someone's mistress, Iris? That's absurd!"

"Your sister chose to sink that low. She must be the one making all your family's money, right?"

"My mom says your sister has no shame. She won't let me hang out with you!"

I hated her. I hated her for disgracing herself and dragging me into it.

If it weren't for her, my parents never would have tried to start a business either. They took over a storefront, but the business failed, and they eventually went bankrupt.

Now she was back, selling the only thing my parents had left behind for me to remember them by.

After I finished yelling at her, she looked at me and chuckled coldly.

"I wish I could, but I can't. You want me dead? Tough luck, then. I'm the only one who'll take you in, so you'd better listen to me. Otherwise, I'll send you right back."

At ten years old, I went pale with fear.

As much as I hated her, I knew I had no choice.

Our relatives all assumed my parents had left me money. Whenever they talked to me, they would eventually tell me to go check with the bank.

They didn't genuinely care about me, but I didn't think Giselle was any better. After all, we'd never even met.

Still, I had no choice. She was my legal guardian.

I went with her to an unfamiliar city in her car, and eventually we arrived at an apartment.

It was her home. It was spotless, with men's clothes and shoes lying around.

My room was upstairs. It wasn't spacious, but it was enough.

"You can do whatever you want on most days. But when my boyfriend comes over, you must stay in your room. Don't come out and cause trouble for me."

I lowered my head and said nothing.

Giselle's boyfriend was a bespectacled, middle-aged man. When he saw me, he gave me a faint smile. "You must be Iris."

I nodded, picked up my glass of water, and hurried upstairs, closing my door behind me.

I could tell from his smile that he was distant.

It reminded me of the teachers at my old school. They would smile and nod at me, too, but there was never any warmth in their eyes.

It was as if I were someone who didn't matter one way or the other.

As my mother used to say, "Some people think they're above everyone else. They're not people we can afford to get close to."

He was exactly the kind of person she meant.

Giselle told me to call him Victor. He ran a trading company in the city and drove expensive cars.

Whenever Victor came over, he brought gifts for Giselle and snacks for me. But he only stayed for a few hours and never spent the night.

I was also enrolled in a nearby elementary school.

No one there knew that my sister was a mistress, but I was still afraid.

I was afraid someone would find out about Giselle. I was afraid I would be mocked because of her.

That went on for two years.

…

By the time I started middle school, I had nowhere to go for summer vacation, so Giselle took me to her workplace.

That was when I found out she worked for Victor's company.

On my first day, I was told that the chubby woman in the office was Victor's wife.

At that moment, my heart sank.

I hated Giselle for bringing me there. Every time I ran into Victor's wife, my stomach twisted with nerves. I was terrified she would call me the mistress' kid.

Her name was Fiona.

Whenever she saw me, she would call out, "Hey, come help me with this!"

She would have me carry her bag and offer me money, but I never dared accept it. Every time, I refused.

I was afraid she would take it back later. Even worse, I was afraid she would call me shameless.

When I refused the money, Fiona simply patted me on the head.

At the end of summer, she bought me two outfits. When school started, she even drove me there herself.

When I found out the school offered boarding, I applied immediately.

  • Be My Daughter in Our Next Life   Chapter 9 What I Finally Understood

After Giselle left, she kept sending money back, saying it was for my education. I didn't know how much of that money actually went toward my expenses, but I never forgot what she'd done for me.I hated our parents. Why had they treated her that way?I'd resented Giselle for so many years. It wasn't until now that I realized how brave she'd really been.I finally came to my senses. I took the money she'd left for me and headed straight to Kingsport for college.Throughout my studies, I came home during every school break. I brought souvenirs for Fiona and Victor, along with plenty of gifts for my little nephew.Whenever Fiona saw me, she'd smile and tell everyone at the factory, "She's my little sister. Why would my own sister spend money when she comes home?"She'd scold me the whole time, then take me shopping and buy me meals.Victor told me that if I ever met a decent guy, I should bring him home so he could meet him.He and Fiona still hadn't gotten back together.Victor

  • Be My Daughter in Our Next Life   Chapter 8 Why She Never Came Back

I got into one of Kingsport's top universities.Fiona and Victor were overjoyed. They even took me to Giselle's grave to tell her the good news. Then, they treated everyone to dinner and put all the gift money toward my tuition. That year, I also made time to go back to my hometown. The home I once knew was long gone. My sister had sold the house.…When I found some of our old relatives and asked them about the debt, they were stunned."What $800,000? Your dad's store and the house covered almost all of it when they were sold. Where did this $800,000 debt come from? Are you sure you weren't lied to?"I was stunned. Then, something suddenly occurred to me.The $800,000 debt was something Giselle had told me about. Why had she told me about it?Shortly after, I ran out of my relatives' house after they found out I had gotten into college. Instead of congratulating me, they told me there was no point in going to college and that I should hurry up and get married."Your mom and

  • Be My Daughter in Our Next Life   Chapter 7 What She Left Behind

The baby was born scrawny, but now, he was a chubby little boy. Every time he saw me, he would kick and wave his arms excitedly.I thought this was probably as good as things could get.If only things could stay this way forever. On the day of my final exams, Victor drove me to the testing center. Giselle came with us, lying down in the car with an oxygen tube attached to her nose. She reached for my hand, but she couldn't speak anymore."Don't worry. I'll definitely get in."Giselle struggled to smile as I entered the testing center.…Three days later, the exams were over.I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders. I had practiced these questions so many times on my own that every one of them felt familiar. I was sure I'd get in this time. When the scores came out, I got a 720. That was enough to get me into the best public high school in town.Giselle finally let out a sigh, and my heart sank when I heard it."Iris…""We still have $800,000 in debt. You can't leave me

  • Be My Daughter in Our Next Life   Chapter 6 Look Ahead

When I saw my sister, I sat down beside her."Summer break is two months. I didn't sign up for tutoring. I'll study on my own. And you're not allowed to die, either. We still owe $800,000. If you die, I won't be able to pay it back on my own. So, don't even think about refusing. You're their daughter too. You have to help pay it back."My words made her laugh."Fine. I'll do my best to stay alive. I won't make you go through this alone."…After that, I went to the hospital every day. Fiona took care of the baby, while Victor and I took care of Giselle.Giselle had surgery, and afterward, she started dialysis. She looked worse with each passing day. The doctor said her condition was extremely serious and that she could die at any time, telling us to be prepared.I read online that someone with kidney failure could receive a kidney transplant. For the first time, I thought about donating one of my kidneys to her.The moment Giselle heard that, her expression fell."Iris, have y

  • Be My Daughter in Our Next Life   Chapter 5 The Truth About Giselle

Victor happened to come by with some food. When he saw me there, he nodded and went straight inside. The moment I saw him with Giselle, I rushed downstairs.Fiona took me to see the baby. He was tiny and wrinkled, and honestly, a little ugly. He cried loudly and drank his milk well. But I didn't like him at all. I took one look and went back.On the way, Fiona said, "Your sister actually worries about you a lot. She's always asking whether you're eating well and have enough clothes. She really does care about you."I couldn't hold it in anymore. "Then, why would she have Victor's baby? Don't you hate her?"Fiona sighed. "You don't understand.""I understand everything. Stop treating me like a kid. I know what people say. They say my sister is Victor's mistress and that this baby is his. Why are you willing to watch him be with my sister?"Fiona was speechless for a long moment before finally saying, "Yes, the baby is Victor's. But I've already told you, your sister isn't his mis

  • Be My Daughter in Our Next Life   Chapter 4 You Never Asked Me

"Fiona, why did you bring her here?"When Giselle saw me, she tried to sit up.Fiona hurried over and held her back down. "I wanted you two to see each other. I didn't want you to regret it later."Looking at Giselle like this, I finally understood—she had a terminal illness.I thought the whole thing about having a baby was a lie. Someone back home had been like this before, and she eventually died because she couldn't pass urine. My mother had said it was kidney failure, and there was no cure.Seeing Giselle like this, I realized how much weight she'd lost in just a few months.I slowly walked over. Giselle took my hand. "You've lost weight since I last saw you. Iris, I might not make it that long."Fiona cut her off. "What are you talking about? You're still young. Don't worry about the cost of treatment."My head was buzzing. I hadn't realized she was this sick.I opened my mouth but couldn't get the words out. Fiona gave me a gentle shove. "What, cat got your tongue?
