Chapter 5: The Toll at the Gate

The rain punished. It lashed against the heavy iron gates of the Lunar Selection Society, driving a thick, freezing mist over the hundreds of masked nobles waiting in the queue. Nobody complained. In the elite werewolf underworld, a prompt appearance at the Selection was the difference between an alliance and annihilation.

I stood near the back of the line, the hem of my midnight-black silk gown dragging against the gravel. Unlike the women around me who shivered in their furs, my skin was deathly still. A quiet, concentrated heat rolled through my bone marrow, a tiny, controlled spark of the divine bloodline I had unlocked at the bottom of the ocean. It kept the freezing rain from numbing my fingers.

“Steady, Aria,” Nyx whispered deep inside my soul. She wasn't pacing or growling. She sat in the dark recesses of my mind like a spider on a web, her silver eyes tracking every guard, every weapon, and every security flaw. “Hide the light. If the High Council detects even a single drop of our true frequency before we are inside, they will lock the gates.”

I know, I thought back, my fingers tightening around the diamond-cut silver coin of Mask 99 hidden inside my sleeve.

About thirty feet ahead of me, the crowd parted slightly as the front of the queue reached the main checkpoint. Under the blinding halogen lights of the entrance, the security setup looked less like a gala reception and more like a military border. Six elite High Council guards dressed in heavy crimson armor stood flanking a massive, archway carved entirely out of raw obsidian.

This was the biometric scanner. The machine didn't read names or papers; it read the intrinsic soul-frequency bound to the physical tokens.

"Step forward, Mask 27," the lead guard boomed, his voice cutting through the roaring wind.

My chest didn't tighten, but my eyes locked onto the girl who stepped into the archway. Seraphina looked breathtakingly beautiful in her spun-gold evening gown, her blonde hair pinned up with diamond clips. In her hand, she proudly held up the golden token she had stolen from me, the one my father had cracked my ribs to obtain.

Flush against her side stood Kael. He looked imposing and perfectly regal in his tailored charcoal suit, his striking blue eyes scanning the perimeter with the sharp, arrogant confidence of a future Alpha prince.

Seraphina held the token against the obsidian pillar. A bright, warm gold light flared across her face, followed by a clear, melodic chime that echoed across the courtyard.

"Identity confirmed. Welcome to the Selection, Mask 27," the guard muttered, bowing his head slightly as he gestured her through.

Seraphina let out a small, breathless giggle, leaning her weight heavily into Kael’s arm as they walked past the iron threshold. "See? I told you it would be seamless," her voice drifted back through the wind, thin and dripping with smug satisfaction. "The mouse is at the bottom of the cliff, Kael. The crown is ours."

"Keep your mouth shut, Sera," Kael muttered, though his broad shoulders visibly relaxed as he stepped through his own scanner. "It’s over. The past is buried. Focus on the ballroom."

They disappeared through the heavy velvet curtains of the inner foyer, completely convinced that their perfect crime was sealed. They truly believed I was currently rotting at the jagged base of the Silver-Rock cliffs, my lungs filled with saltwater and wolfsbane.

The line moved with a slow, agonizing crawl. For forty minutes, I watched the elite of the continent surrender their tokens, receive their clearances, and vanish into the warmth of the estate.

Finally, the courtyard emptied.

"Next. Mask 99," the lead guard barked, his eyes red from the heavy storm as he glanced down at his logbook.

I stepped out of the shadows of the tree line, my heels clicking sharply against the slick marble path. I didn't raise the silver filigree mask to my face yet. I held it deliberately by my side, letting the guards see my bare, flawless features. My face was pale, unblemished, and entirely devoid of the purple bruises my father had left hours ago.

The guard looked up, his stern expression faltering for a fraction of a second as his eyes locked onto mine. There was an eerie, unsettling vacuum of power around me, I had completely suppressed my scent, leaving nothing but an empty, chilling void that made his instinctual wolf prickle with unease.

"Token," he demanded, his hand reaching out.

I didn't hand it to him. I let the silver coin slide from my sleeve, dropping it precisely into his gloved palm. The metal clinked heavily.

"Step into the archway," he muttered, turning to his monitor.

I took two steps forward, positioning myself directly beneath the heavy obsidian block. The moment my boots cleared the perimeter, the machine didn't flash gold.

It went dead silent.

The small mechanical ticking of the security panels stopped. The digital reader on the guard's desk went completely black, the green power lights flickering rapidly before dying out entirely. A heavy, suffocating pressure dropped over the archway, the raw obsidian stone absorbing the ambient heat of the courtyard until ice began to form along its edges.

The machine wasn't processing the token. It was choking on my bloodline. The ancient, dormant frequency of the Moon Goddess was too dense, too old for the Council's modern algorithms to categorize.

"What the hell?" the guard muttered, his fingers flying across the dead console.

The other five crimson-clad guards instantly shifted their weight, their hands dropping to the hilts of their silver-tipped halberds. The metal shrieked against their scabbards, the sound sharp and lethal in the quiet rain.

"The scanner just lost baseline," another guard hissed, stepping around the pillar to look at me. His eyes narrowed behind his visor. "The token isn't registering a pulse. Female, step back from the threshold immediately."

My heart rate didn't elevate by a single beat. In my past life, a situation like this would have sent me into a sobbing panic, begging for mercy while the guards dragged me to the dungeons.

But I wasn't that girl anymore. I had bought a very specific piece of intelligence from a corrupt Council Clerk before the storm hit.

"There is no need to draw your weapons, Officer," I said, my voice smooth, cold, and entirely level. I didn't step back. Instead, I leaned slightly forward, locking my eyes onto the lead guard’s identification badge. Commander Zack.

"The machine didn't fail," I whispered, keeping my tone low enough that only a werewolf’s enhanced hearing could catch it over the wind. "The identity bound to Mask 99 is under an absolute proxy seal by the Northern High Vault. If you force a hard reset on that console, the biometric lock will flag this entire sector as a security breach. And I don't think your commanding officer would appreciate explaining a system shutdown to the High Council tonight... especially not when your wife's black-market lung-serum shipments are currently arriving through the eastern docks."

The lead guard froze. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a ghost beneath his helmet.

His hand stayed locked on his sword, but his fingers began to tremble. The illegal medical shipments for his dying mate were a secret he had buried under years of loyal service. He had no idea how a random, nameless participant standing in the rain knew the exact layout of his life.

He didn't know I had watched him bury his wife three years from now in my past life.

"You..." Vance whispered, his jaw tightening as he stared at me through the rain.

"Push the override, Commander," I murmured, my eyes flashing with a cold, manipulative spark. "Let me through as a system glitch. You save your career, and I enter the ballroom. It’s a very simple toll."

The seconds ticked by, heavy and lethal. The other guards looked between Zack and me, waiting for the order to cut me down.

Zack swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. With a stiff, jerky motion, he reached under his desk and slammed his palm against a hidden, manual override switch. The obsidian archway groaned, a dull green light flickering back to life across the stone.

"System error cleared," Zack called out, his voice strained as he forced himself to look away from my face. He grabbed the silver token and thrust it back into my hand, his fingers brushing against mine. He was cold as ice. "Mask 99... you are cleared for entry. Move along."

"Thank you for your service, Commander," I said softly.

I raised the silver filigree mask, letting the cold, diamond-cut metal settle against my skin. The world through the thin slits turned darker, sharper, and completely focused.

I turned my back on the gate and pushed past the heavy velvet curtains into the inner foyer. The warmth of the estate hit me instantly, but it couldn't touch the frost hardening in my chest.

Ahead of me lay the grand ballroom, a massive colosseum of gold, lies, and dangerous men. And right in the center of that room, my family was currently drinking to my death.

I took a deep breath, letting the scent of the crowd wash over me as I prepared to step onto the floor. But as I took my first step toward the music, a sudden, heavy scent cut through the perfume and wine.

It was dark cedar and burnt ozone.

Deep within my soul, Nyx suddenly sharpened her claws, her silver eyes locking onto the high tier above. He was already watching.

The word hit harder than the silver blade that had pierced my rib cage three months ago.Whore.I stood alone on the snow-swept northern ramparts, the freezing mountain wind whipping my hair into wild, tangled dark threads around my face. Down below, the iron gates of the inner keep slammed shut with a deafening, final thud, a heavy, metallic echo that signaled Alpha King Lucien Storm’s absolute withdrawal from my side.My hand hovered in the empty air where his arm had been seconds before. The lingering scent of his cedarwood and ozone still hovered in the frost, but the warmth was gone. In its place was a suffocating, hollow silence that clawed at my chest.“Aria...” Nyx’s voice echoed softly within my spiritual core, devoid of its usual arrogant cruelty, replaced by a rare, solemn caution. “The Sovereign’s bond is a dangerous weapon to lose. His wolf is wounded. A wounded Alpha king does not play chess; he tears down the board.”"He had to hate me, Nyx," I whispered into the howlin

The lingering heat of Lucien’s bed chamber still clung to my skin, but inside my chest, a freezing current of dread began to circulate. It was not merely the lingering scent of cedarwood and ozone that haunted me, nor the memory of his heavy, scarred hands mapping every inch of my body in the dark. It was something far more dangerous, a ghost of sensation that refused to remain buried. When he had dragged me to the edge of the oak table hours before, pinning my wrists above my head with a single iron palm, a sudden, terrifying lightning bolt of recognition had shattered my focus. The exact angle of his heavy chest pressing into mine, the lethal, possessive rhythm of his hips, the way his dark baritone rasped low against the column of my throat when he lost control,it was all devastatingly, inexplicably familiar. I have been beneath this man before, my body had screamed in silent panic. Long before the selection. Long before the cliff. It was an impossible thought. Before the

He lifted me from the table, and I gasped, wrapping my legs around his waist as he carried me across the chamber. The fire roared in the hearth, casting dancing shadows across the fur-piled bed as he laid me down with a care that belied his raw, barely-leashed power. He stood over me for a moment, drinking in the sight of me, bare-chested, the silk tunic pooled at my waist, my silver filigree mask gleaming in the firelight. His hands moved to his own clothing, working the lacings of his leather breeches with impatient, trembling fingers. "I have imagined this a hundred times," he rasped, his voice low and wrecked. "Every way I would have you. Every sound you would make. And now that you are here, beneath me, I am shaking like a boy." "Then stop imagining," I said softly, reaching for him. "And come to me." He did. His body covered mine, massive and burning, his chest a solid wall of muscle and heat against my soft curves. He kissed me again, deeper this time, his hand sliding be

The High Council did not take defeat lightly; they panicked. Following the disastrous climax of the Moonlit Hunt, where Lord Corvin’s elite mercenaries were routed and the primary Shadow-Beast core was claimed under the Sovereign’s mark, the subterranean corridors of the Council fortress were in a state of outright frenzy. By midnight, the emergency Directorate chamber was lit by fifty tallow candles. Lord Corvin slammed his heavy signet ring onto the dark oak table, his yellowed eyes bloodshot with rage. "She is a phantom!" Corvin hissed, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls to the gathered elders. "Mask 99 has systematically neutralized every legal mandate, every trial trap, and every biological lure we have set! The final unmasking gala is five days away! If that female stands beside Sovereign Lucien without a verified bloodline record, the High Directorate’s authority over the Northern Territory will be permanently severed!" Sitting at the foot of the table, Seraphina c

  • Beg For Me, Alpha Kael    Chapter 20: The Touch of Gold and Poison

The High Council’s emergency pavilion was a grand tent of dark canvas and iron, pitched near the southern perimeter of the forest. Inside, the heavy air was suffocating, reeking of burned sage, dried wolfsbane, and blood. Following the chaotic end of the Moonlit Hunt, the Council’s top pack healers had been summoned to tend to the wounded. The final unmasking gala was only few days away, the climax of the Selection Society, where noble parents, pack elders, and high-ranking regional lords from across the continent would arrive to cheer the victors and witness the final sovereign matches. The Council could not afford to present broken candidates to the public eye. I stood in the shadowed corner of the grand pavilion, wrapped in the dark, fur-lined Sovereign cloak that Alpha King Lucien Storm had draped over my shoulders. Behind the silver filigree of Mask 99, my eyes were cold, sharp, and entirely focused on my true target. Revenge was not a hot, reckless emotion; it was a cold,

  • Beg For Me, Alpha Kael    Chapter 19: The Executioner’s Stage

The air at the base of the glacial waterfall was so cold it turned breath into silver mist before it could touch the stone. Cascades of roaring water slammed against jagged, ice-slicked boulders, creating an endless, deafening thunder that masked the quiet approach of predators. I stood at the absolute edge of the icy precipice, wrapped tight in Alpha King Lucien Storm’s heavy Sovereign cloak. Inside the black cavern behind us, the ancient Shadow-Beast, a massive, six-eyed horror of dark muscle and razor-sharp shadow-fangs snarled in its sleep. Its suffocating, sulfurous aura rolled out into the night air, mixed with the sharp, intoxicating fragrance of my own divine goddess scent and Lucien’s dominant cedarwood. “The flies are in the web,” Nyx purred inside my mind, her silver claws unsheathed, scratching against the floorboards of my soul. “Look at them. Coming to claim a prize that will devour them whole.” Down below, emerging from the fog-shrouded tree line, two figures
