“Damian, you ever wondered why I didn’t want to marry you when you proposed?” In front of prison, Catherine suddenly smiles, only it’s bitter than ever, “You chose HER over me once, and I had sworn to never allow you to do that again.” Damian opens his eyes in shock. “But then I married you. You said you were over her, and you kept choosing her over me, over and over and over again, showing me that I would always be the third wheel in my own marriage. Every time I compromise, you would only prove again that she weighs the most in your heart, more than anyone.” “Catherine--” “You can choose her over me as much as you want from now on,” Catherine’s curvy eyes are so gentle and bright, yet it hurts Damian’s heart more than any weapon in the world, “but today, THIS, is the last time I’m gonna care about it.” “Goodbye, Mr. Moore.”
View MoreCity skirt, Dawson Villa.
Suffering a thunderstorm, the sky pure dark. Except for the glimpses of lightning. The city’s dim glow hides behind the foggy rain, seemingly warmer than usual, especially to someone who is wobbling in front of the cold iron gate of a villa.
Like Catherine right now.
She has been waiting for hours. Hugging herself tight to stop shivering, Catherine paces around to keep her numb limbs warm. She didn’t know the storm would be this bad, but then again, she would be here even if she did.
She has no other to turn to.
A sharp honk startles her. She turns, raising her hand to her eyes as the blinding car lights pierce through the water curtain right onto her face. The iron gate opens with a loud shriek and the car starts, as if it only stopped for the gate, not for her.
Ten feet. Five feet. One foot. The car moves, and the woman doesn’t.
The car stops for the stubborn woman.
The driver’s window rolls down, and the man sticks his head out, only a little.
“Throwing your socialite reputation away to be a crazy stalking Ex?” The man smirks with a careless tone, clicking his tongue, “I didn’t think you were such a cliche, Catherine.”
Catherine thought she could face the man she once loved, yet her calm mask broke by the first words out of his mouth.
“Maverick, I’m sorry but I need help,” Seeing the man is finally talking to her, Catherine hastes a step up to the side of the car, “My mom, she’s--”
Her tongue freezes. There is a woman in the car.
Maverick broke up with her. But in barely one month and he’s got a new girl? Suddenly Catherine wonders what the three long years between them mean to the man.
Following Catherine’s sight, Maverick looks over at his new girl tauntingly. He takes her hand into his own, kneading it slowly for Catherine to see.
Catherine bites her lips. Her heart stings as if thousands of needles are piercing through at the same time. Catherine is surprised that after the last hellish month, she is still not fully numb to heartache.
“Just...fifty grand, and I won’t bother you again,” Wiping the rain off her face, Catherine pulls her eyes back from the girl, keeping her tone calm.
She didn’t come to fight. She can’t afford to.
The man’s lips curve up into a taunting grin. She can’t see clearly through the rain, but she feels the despise like knives under her skin. Such a number used to be her pocket money, and now she has to grind all her pride to beg for it.
“You are here for money?” The man taunts slowly, every word lingering on his tongue as if chewing something delicious, “You have reached a new low, C.”
“Borrow!” Catherine swallows the sour gulp behind her throat, “I’ll pay you back, 10% rate--”
“How are you gonna pay me back when you are broke, princess?” Maverick reaches out to Catherine’s collar and by instinct, she covers her chest and steps away.
The man lets out a mocking laugh.
“I’m sorry, I was wrong,” His tone turns meaner, “You were renounced. You are no longer the city princess now, are you? You are no longer even a Quinn.”
“I AM a Quinn!” Catherine squeezes the words out of her chattering teeth, “Daddy gave me that name, not Mr. Quinn!”
Mr. Quinn. Not even Grandpa anymore. Smirking, Maverick tastes the cold address, his eyes trailing up and down the tiny figure in the rain. Sunk to the lowest, yet the pride in Queen C does not get extinguished. Not by anything.
“Remember how proud you once were, C?” Maverick drawls lazily, sitting in the comfortable car, watching the woman suffering outside his window, “I broke up with you, you smiled and left, not even bothering to ask a why.”
Catherine frowns, more confused than angry. He stopped wanting to her, so she left. What’s there to ask? Her pride doesn’t allow her to beg for a change of heart, no matter how much she loved him.
“That silence is exactly why,” The man says with icy cold eyes, “You are too proud. You need no one, and you never show weakness. Not even to me. A real woman knows when to bend.”
Saying those words, Maverick grabs his girl’s neck and shakes lightly. The girl giggles, leaning into Maverick’s body, pressing her chest against his body.
The image stings Catherine's eyes. That’s his why? That she is too independent? “Did you hook up with her before or after us?!” Catherine demands.
“Bend that body of yours to the right man, Queen C.” Maverick ignores Catherine, “and you will gather the money you want and more.”
His car roars and dashes forward before his words can land. Catherine dodges aside, only to fall into the mud. Twisting pain bursts out from her ankle, but she can’t tell whether her heart hurts more or her foot.
She came here to throw away her dignity, and she is left with the pretty image of her three years with him shattered as well.
She really has nothing left now.
Not far away, a black Rolls Royce Phantom took in the whole show quietly.
“Not quite the show I expected,” A man's low, rough voice breaks the silence in the luxury car, lazy like a just fed beast, “...more interesting though.”
That man really is bad news. The worst, to her.If only she didn’t meet him again. If only she didn’t go to see Maverick, that night.Actually, if she is wishing for things...if only that car crash didn’t happen. She lost everything that night. Her loving parents, a home she warmed up to after her dark childhood, and now, very likely, her last shred of dignity.“I wonder if Ava would still pay if I tell her the price for her backup is not 50,000$, but with another zero in there...” Lying on the sofa in Cora’s ward, Catherine mumbles to herself, with a bitter chuckle.500,000$ in a day. She doesn’t really have many options.“Miss Catherine...” Victoria hesitates, seeing the slumped girl she has been caring for since she was taken in by the orphanage, “Are you really going to give it to your uncle? Your mom wouldn’t want it...”Victoria can’t go on. She knows how hard it has been on her little Miss Cat these days. Cora might not want it, but if Catherine doesn’t do it, then Cora might n
Catherine answers with a cold glare. The man laughs at it.With smiling eyes, he says the most tender words in the most arrogant way, as if he’s doing her a generous favor: “I’m not marrying you because of Ava, if that’s what you are worried about.”“Not because of Ava” is not the same as love, though. She has asked him that twice now, she won’t be asking again. His love is not on the table, and even if it is, she is not interested in a forced deal.“And not because of someone is the best reason you can find for a marriage?” Catherine snorts, and Damian looks over with a smile that says--[What more are you looking for? Love?]Damn it!She just doesn’t want to marry some random guy who met her for the first time, why does it feel like she’s begging him to love her?!“Damian Moore,”The man puts down the glass, meeting her eyes. She has been mimicking Ava’s style? Damian remembers the mean comments tonight, paying attention to it for the first time. The dull, tame, serene kind? Might s
The call ends automatically, and then it comes in, again.Catherine walks over and picks up the phone, sliding to put the call through, then on speaker, then the phone right by the man’s head.“Damian?” Ava’s soft voice comes through, “Are you home yet?”The man doesn’t move, at all.“Damian?” Ava urgers, her worry spouting out of the screen.“He is asleep,” Catherine leans forward, her voice cold.Short silence.“Catherine,” Ava says in a flat tone, “...am I on speaker?”“Yes,” Catherine glances at the “sleeping” man, “just in case your words can enter his dreams.”“I need to talk to you, too.”Glaring at Damian one last time, Catherine picks up the phone and puts it to her ear, waiting. After a long moment, Ava asks indifferently: “Will you take care of him tonight?”“Do you want me to?” Catherine smirks, eyes landing on Damian’s slightly shivering eyelashes, “...or NOT want me to?”Silence on Ava’s side.“Catherine, you hate me because your friend loves a man who loves me, that’s a
Seeing how he handled himself in front of Ava, all the way into details like putting his hand on her waist, Catherine intends to assume that he is faking drunk. But, he is the daddy with sugar now, one that has her fate in hand.Catherine puts on a perfect smile, putting the man-child in his seat before taking the steerwheel.Lived her biker days well, Catherine knows the city well into detail. Though went only once, she remembers well where Damian’s loft is.Few cars on the street at night. Catherine sets her biker’s free spirit free with only one hand on the wheel, the other elbow on the winder, enjoying the night breeze hitting her face.Damian is quiet, a light frown on his face with his eyes closed. When there are no mean words out of those lips, Catherine actually likes him more. She glances at him as she hits the brake with a swift turn. The frowning on Damian’s face deepened. Her heart tightens at his frowning. She didn’t think but the alcohol in his stomach obviously not agre
Wabbling with his steps, Damian puts his weight on Catherine, making her wabble with him, too.“I don’t want to go, I want to know,” The man grumbles, but not really rejecting Catherine’s move as she supports him, “tell me, please?”His eyes so clean, like crystal. No schemes, no coldness. Only innocent curiosity. She can fight him when he is mean, but when he shows vulnerability, she can’t help her heart move for him.“Why do you hate me, kitten?”“I don’t hate you,” Catherine confirms patiently. The man’s eyes brighten at her words, and that lifts her mood, too.But then when she looks up, she sees what the man is stalling for, and the faint warmth on her face fades. Every bit of it.Ava Knight with Killian Romano, walking right at them.Damian sees them, too. His arm on her shoulder slides down to her waist, making it look intimate.Does it ever work? To paint such a fake intimacy in front of the girl who owns his heart? When he lost his heart, he already lost the game.Catherine f
Catherine doesn’t answer right away. Not likely. Even washed tattoos must leave some sort of a trace. Ink under the skin is not easy to get rid of, just like anything under one’s skin. For example, a woman.Damian waits, his eyes on her so sharp as if he could cut her open with those eyes and get the answer himself.“...no,” Catherine turns to him, her voice light but calm. She’s not lying.Damian feels a tremendous wave of disappointment washing over him. What did he expect? That Catherine could be that woman? Or it’s because...He wants her to be?“You are looking for someone,” Catherine states, not asking, glancing at Damian with indifferent eyes, “a biker with a collarbone tattoo?”Damian doesn’t answer her, real darkness occupying his eyes this time.“I can ask around for you if you want,” Catherine offers, her tone so light it almost sounds cheering, “who is she?”Damian glances at Catherine with a frown. Her cheering tone stings him. Is Catherine THAT happy to see his attention
