Chapter 17

Kai's POV 

The world seemed to stop for a moment when I heard what the doctor said. 

Nothing moved. I heard no sounds—except the sound of my heart pounding against my ribs. Blood rushed to my ears as I stared at the doctor, too stunned to speak. 

“W-what...?” I managed to say, and the doctor glanced at me. 

“Miss Hale is pregnant, Mr. Voss. That's why she has been experiencing the symptoms she has,” she explained. 

I let out a shaky breath as I gripped the chair, a million thoughts running through my head. 

Mia was pregnant. 

How the hell did that happen?

We were only intimate once. One time!

But I slowly realized that I had been too swept up by the moment that I forgot to use protection. 

Fucking hell. 

This was not supposed to happen. 

“Doctor... Are you sure about what you're saying? I'm p-pregnant...? That's not possible. I'm pretty sure I just have a fever or something...” Mia spluttered, her face pale as she looked at the doctor. 

“You're a student nurse, Miss Hale. You should know the symptoms of pregnancy,” the doctor said calmly. “But let me ask you a question. When was the last time you saw your period?”

Mia's eyes darted around as she tried to think. “The last time I saw my period was a little over a month ago... I was supposed to see it again last week, but I thought it was late because I've been stressed recently...”

A smile tugged at the doctor's lips as she nodded. “Well, Miss Hale, it's not stress. You are pregnant.”

Mis gasped as she put a hand over her mouth, and her eyes welled up with tears. 

“This can't be happening,” she muttered as she buried her face in her palms. 

When I realized what was going on, I looked towards the doctor. 

“Can you please give us a moment?” I asked calmly and she nodded. 

“Of course,” she replied before walking out of the office. 

After the doctor closed the door, I looked at Mia in silence, not knowing what to do. 

Her shoulders shook as she cried, and I felt a squeeze in my chest at the sight. 

Hesitant, I reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder to at least comfort her in a way. 

I rubbed her shoulder for several minutes as she kept crying. 

She finally stopped after a while, and she slowly raised her head to look at me. 

Mia's eyes were red, her face wet with tears, with mucus on her nose. She looked like her life had shattered before her eyes and she didn't know how to pick the pieces back up. 

“W-what are we going to do? I wasn't supposed to get pregnant. I didn't even think this was going to happen,” she said with a snivel. 

“First of all, you need to stop crying...” I trailed off as I took out a handkerchief from my pocket and used it to clean her face. 

“How can I stop crying? I'm pregnant, Kai! My life is over!” she cried, a fresh round of tears rolling down her cheeks. “I don't know what came over me that night, but it was just supposed to be a one-time thing. This wasn't supposed to happen.”

My jaw clenched as I looked away from her. 

“Your life is not over. I'm right here, and I will take care of you and the baby if you're truly pregnant,” I said coldly. “I still don't trust you. And for all I know, you could be lying and using this pregnancy to get to me.”

Mia let out a shocked gasp as she stared at me. 

“Really, Kai? Is that what you think? I'm literally pregnant with your baby right now, and you think I'd be lying about that? You really don't see me as a person!” she snapped.

“I'm not saying that you're lying, I'm just considering the possibility,” I said through gritted teeth. “Let's not forget what brought us together in the first place.”

Mia looked resigned as she nodded. “Right. I didn't forget. You never gave me a chance to.”

I blew a breath as I tried to calm down.

“Since you're pregnant now, there's nothing we can do about it. I'm going to do what I can as your instructor and adjust your course workload so it wouldn't be too stressful for you. Is that fine?” 

Mia nodded and said nothing. 

“Alright then. You can go now,” I said calmly. “Your exam must have started. Tell your professor you were sick and had to come to the infirmary first. He should understand.”

“Alright,” was all she said before walking out of the doctor's office without looking back. 

The moment she was out of sight, I squeezed my eyes shut and massaged my temple. 

This pregnancy wss going to change a lot of things for us. 

I didn't regret what happened between me and Mia that night three weeks ago. 

I had been shocked when she initiated it, and I wanted to stop. 

But I didn't. I couldn't. 

She was my mate. 

It had taken everything in me not to get close to her since she started staying in the villa. My wolf wanted us to claim her as ours. But I knew she wouldn't want that. 

So seeing as she kissed me first that night, I had lost every ounce of restraint and kissed her back. I didn't even think of using protection or asking if she was on contraceptives. 

But it had happened and it led to this. 

And I couldn't possibly ask her to terminate the pregnancy. 

It was my first baby—and what made it all the more special was that I was having it with my mate. We might not be on the best terms, but that didn't make it any less precious.

I sighed before standing up. 

After straightening my suit, I walked out of the office and ran into the doctor outside. 

“Thanks for earlier, doctor. I appreciate it,” I said calmly and she smiled.

“You're welcome, Mr. Voss. Please tell Miss Hale to take things easy going forward. She's still in her early stages and will need a lot of rest to avoid any complications.”

“I understand, doctor,” I responded. “Could I ask you for a favor, please?”

She looked confused for a second before nodding. “Sure thing...”

“Can you please look after Mia whenever she's in school? I won't be here all the time, and I'd feel reassured knowing there's someone who can keep an eye on her and make sure she's not stressing herself. Can you do that for me?” I asked calmly. 

The doctor thought about it for a bit and smiled. “Of course, Mr. Voss. It'd be my pleasure.”

A smile tugged at my lips. “Thank you, doctor. I owe you one.”

I walked out of the school infirmary with a renewed sense of determination. 

Now that Mia was carrying my child, I couldn't keep slacking. 

I needed to accelerate my investigation into Liam and get to the bottom of this whole situation fast. 

There was no time to waste.
