Laura woke to the sound of camp breaking around her. Her shoulder felt better, much better. She unwrapped the bandage on her palm and gasped. The wound had almost completely healed overnight.

"What the hell?" she whispered, flexing her fingers. No pain.

She touched her shoulder where the shadow wolf had clawed her. Still tender, but the burning sensation was gone. Even the old scratches on her arms looked faded.

"About time you woke up," Dante's voice came from outside the tent. "We march in an hour."

Laura quickly dressed and stepped outside. The morning air was crisp, and warriors were already loading supplies onto horses. The four Alphas stood together near the center of camp, deep in discussion.

"How do you feel?" Lucian asked as she approached.

"Better. Much better." Laura held up her healed hand. "Look."

Zephyr studied her palm with interest. "The shadow magic is gone from this wound. But your shoulder?"

"Still hurts, but less."

"Interesting," Nikolai murmured. "Your ma

The ride back to camp felt like torture.Laura sat behind Dante on his horse, but she might as well have been alone. His back was rigid against her chest. Every muscle in his body screamed anger.Behind them, wagons carried the wounded villagers they'd managed to save. Thirty-seven people. Out of two hundred. The numbers kept spinning in Laura's head. One hundred and sixty-three dead. How many of those shadow wolves had been people like David? People with families, with children waiting for them to come home?"You could have died," Dante said suddenly. He sounded really pissed.Laura pressed her face against his shoulder. "But I didn't.""That's not the point Laura." he replied stiffly. She could smell his anger mixed with fear. It rolled off him in waves. Her chest ached, but not from her mark this time. This was different and it hurt worse."Dante, I—""Don't." His voice cut through her like a blade. "Just don't."Laura closed her mouth and held on tighter. But he pulled away from h

The moment shattered immediately like glass."How many?" Nikolai's voice turned ice cold. All traces of the tender man who'd just kissed her vanished."At least thirty shadow wolves," Cyrus panted. "Maybe more. They hit the village almost an hour ago."Laura's blood went cold. Thirty shadow wolves could wipe out an entire village in minutes."Get the others," Nikolai ordered. "Now."Cyrus nodded and ran. Within minutes, the tent filled with voices and bodies. Lucian arrived first, his face grim. Dante and Zephyr followed close behind."What's the situation?" Lucian asked."Shadow wolves attacking Millbrook," Nikolai said, already reaching for his weapons. "Small farming village, maybe two hundred people.""How far?" Dante was strapping on his sword."Three hours hard ride.""Too long," Zephyr said quietly. "By the time we get there..."He didn't finish. He didn't need to. They all knew what shadow wolves did to villages."We have to try," Laura said. All four Alphas turned to look at

Laura couldn't sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, for some reason she saw Selena's sharp smile and heard her warning about being fragile. The camp was quiet except for the guards patrolling, but she noticed light still coming from Nikolai's tent.Voices drifted from inside. Not loud, but enough to make her curious. She'd been wondering about his mysterious network all day. Maybe this was her chance to finally understand what he really did.She walked over and paused outside the tent flap. "Come in, Laura," Nikolai's voice called softly. "I can smell your scent."Heat crept up her neck as she pushed inside. The tent was larger than the others, with several people gathered around a table covered in papers and maps. They all looked up when she entered."Everyone, this is Laura," Nikolai said, rising from his chair. "Laura, meet my team."A petite woman with dark hair stepped forward first. "I'm Lyra. Information specialist." Her eyes were sharp and knowing, like she could see right

Laura winced as she tried to move her arm. The new claw marks from the shadow wolf attack burned like fire. She'd noticed something strange though - when her mark had glowed during the fight, the pain had lessened. And when she'd fainted at training, the wound on her bandaged hand had looked smaller for a while. But now it was back to throbbing with each heartbeat."She shouldn't have been out there in the first place!" Lucian's angry voice cut through the night air outside the healers' tent."She's not made of glass," Dante shot back. "Laura can handle herself.""With one good hand? Against shadow wolves?" Lucian's voice rose. "Are you insane?"Laura closed her eyes, exhaustion weighing her down. They were arguing about her like she wasn't even there."Stop it." Her voice was quiet, but something in her tone made both Alphas pause. "Please. Just... stop."The arguing stopped immediately.Laura sat up slowly, her shoulder screaming in protest. "I'm tired. I hurt. And listening to you

Laura rolled to the side, pain shooting up her arm as she landed wrong on her injured hand. The shadow wolf's claws raked the ground where she'd been a second before.Dante was already moving, his blade slicing through the air toward the creature's neck. But shadow wolves were fast. Too fast. It twisted away, black eyes fixed on Laura like she was the only prey that mattered."They're drawn to your mark," Dante growled réalisation setting in as he stepped between her and the wolf again. "Stay close to me."Two more shadow wolves emerged from the darkness, their forms seeming to melt from the shadows themselves. Laura's heart hammered against her ribs. Three against two, and she was fighting with one good hand."Left!" she shouted as one of the creatures circled behind Dante. He spun, blade meeting claws in a shower of sparks. The impact sent him staggering back a step. These weren't the ordinary shadow wolves she had fought. They were bigger and stronger.Laura ducked as the first wol
