Eleven

Enzo stared into the blue coldness of Gypsy's eyes, his heart thumping inside his chest. After what felt like forever but was merely seconds, the dark look in her eyes began to lighten. Nothing too bright, but it rescued his racing heart and filled his chest with a warm assurance that her resistance was gone or on the way to being annihilated.

She didn't say anything as she looked away from him to carry the sauce pan off the stove, but her silence told him that she was willing to try, which was a win for him, especially when she looked at him and asked,

“Will you join us for breakfast?”

A thrill went through him, and Enzo had to remind his body not to react so foolishly. She was only doing this for their daughter's sake.

Why else would she do it? A voice in his voice taunted.
