The guards came pouring into the Grand Hall, limping, bloodied, broken—some barely clinging to life. Most had no strength left to open portals; they had walked the long road back on foot, dragging their pain with them.

Torock stood at the high window in his office, watching through the warped glass with a dark sneer. His face twisted with disgust.

"Look at them," he growled under his breath. "Pathetic. Useless!" His rage mounted, uncontainable. With a roar, he slammed his fist down onto the desk, sending papers, relics, and glass shattering across the floor.

"Portal! Now!" he snapped. The air split with a shimmer as a narrow rip opened.

"Asmodeus—speak."

A hazy image formed—a demon’s grinning face, sharp and gleaming.

"As I told you before, Torock," Asmodeus hissed, his voice like oil and embers, "unless you're willing to deal, we have nothing left to discuss."

"Wait!" Torock spat. "I’m... willing to reconsider your conditions. But for now, release the package you’re holding for me."

The demon grinned, fangs glinting. "You evil, soulless dog," he crooned. "Of course. With a little something extra—my treat. When do you want her ready?"

"As soon as possible. I need someone ruthless, cunning, strong enough to survive in this realm. No slip-ups. I want a real killer."

He laughed hard, almost manically. “Wait until they get a load of my Trojan horse.”

A soldier burst into the room, out of breath, fear dripping from his voice.

"HEAD COUNCIL! They’re all dead! The whole battalion—"

Torock raised a finger, silencing him without a word. Then, back to Asmodeus: “You’ll have your bodies. The fresher, the better. End communication.”

The portal snapped closed.

Torock turned, cold and unfeeling. “Take a team. Go back to the forest. Collect every Fate—whole or in pieces. Bring them to cold storage. Every last one.”

"Y-yes, Head Council Torock..." the soldier stammered, eyes wide with horror. He had heard too much.

---

Meanwhile, Charlene knelt beside ReNew, who lay deathly still on a soft bed of moss. Her breath was shallow. Her skin, pale. Her life force—flickering like a candle in a storm.

"You have to say the words," Charlene whispered, desperate, her voice cracking as she pressed her ear to ReNew’s chest.

“Bump... bump…”

“I’ve done what I can to keep her stable,” Gilead said gently. “But she’s slipping away. I’ll give you two a moment.”

Charlene held ReNew’s hand tightly, guiding it toward the mark on her wrist. “We are one,” she whispered. Guilt poured out of her like rain. “If I had just gotten to you sooner… if I hadn’t—”

Seth pulled her gently into his arms.

“She can’t, Princess,” he murmured. “She’s dying. That branch crushed her from the inside. Her organs are failing. She doesn’t have much time.”

Charlene looked up at him, hollow-eyed. “What happens to her now?”

“She’s a soul. She’ll be recycled... born again into a new Fate.”

Charlene wrenched away from him, shaking her head fiercely. “No! She’s my soul! My other half! My friend! I won’t let her go!”

She ran back to ReNew, collapsed beside her, and clenched her hand.

Her eyes glowed white-hot. “Mind’s Eye.”

A blinding light flooded her vision.

---

Inside the Mind’s Eye, there was nothing but mist… and a small bed in the distance, like one from an old B&B. A small figure lay curled on it—fragile, barely breathing.

Charlene ran.

She climbed onto the bed, laying down gently beside her, nose to nose. ReNew didn’t stir. Her breathing was faint. Her skin—chill.

“Hey,” Charlene whispered, brushing hair from her forehead. “I know you can hear me. I know you’re still in there. You just need to say the words. I’ll do the rest. Please…”

A tear slipped down Charlene’s cheek and landed on ReNew’s skin.

“I can’t do this without you. This cannot be our last journey.”

She cupped ReNew’s face, desperation turning to power. “There’s still time. Still hope. If I can take you into my Mind’s Eye... you can live. You’re a part of me. And I’m not letting you go.”

“We are one,” she whispered.

The light erupted from Charlene’s hands—warm, golden, infinite. It poured into ReNew like sunlight on frozen ground. Bones realigned. Lungs reinflated. Organs mended and pulsed with energy. Her chest rose. Then again. Stronger.

ReNew’s fingers twitched.

Her eyes fluttered open.

"I had the strangest dream,” she murmured, voice raw. “I was falling off a cliff... and before I hit the bottom, you caught me.”

Charlene pulled her into a fierce hug. “I wasn’t there to catch you soon enough. But I will never let that happen again.”

ReNew leaned into her. “It wasn’t your fault. I got cocky. I thought I could handle it.”

Charlene grabbed her shoulders. “Don’t you ever scare me like that again! You’re my sister—my only friend. I can't do this without you.”

They held each other for a moment longer.

Then ReNew sat up with purpose. “We’re a team. Which means we have to train together.”

She led Charlene into a small white space inside the Mind’s Eye—filled with gleaming weapons of light.

“What is all this?” Charlene asked, eyes wide.

“My training ground,” ReNew smiled. “I’ve been building it. This—” she held up a bow that crackled with electricity—“is my lightning bow. For long-distance hits.”

“And this?” Charlene asked, lifting a shimmering disc.

“Light shield. For overhead defense. I took these from your memories. I hope you don’t mind.”

Charlene blinked. “Mind? You’re a genius.”

“No, you are.” ReNew giggled. “I just borrowed your gamer brain.”

Charlene laughed. “You mean all those hours playing Mario Kart actually paid off?”

ReNew grinned and summoned a big TV screen with the familiar logo.

“I found this in your memory,” she said, pulling out a remote. “I challenge you.”

“You sure we should be gaming when they think you’re dying?”

ReNew shrugged. “I figured we deserved a moment. The world’s changing too fast. Let’s make a memory that’s just ours.”

Charlene blinked—two bean bag chairs popped beneath them.

Then she said, “You know Gigi tried to impersonate Mike?”

ReNew raised an eyebrow. “What?!”

“She almost fooled me. Until I asked about Heaven. She said it was ‘like a dream.’ That’s when I knew.”

ReNew summoned a giant soda and red vines. “Gigi’s doing too much.”

“Right? It’s giving gaslight!”

“Like I’m stupid or something!”

“But hey... she did get you back to me.”

“Yeah,” Charlene smiled. “True.”

“Blink.” Charlene conjured a popcorn box the size of a throne.

They both said it at the same time: “I WANT SOME!”

Laughter rang through the Mind’s Eye.

Charlene smirked, pressing start on the game. “Once a cheat, always a cheat, ReNew.”

ReNew cackled. “Bring it on, sis!”

---

Outside the Mind’s Eye, Gilead returned to check on them. He stopped in his tracks.

They were curled together, ReNew breathing normally, their cheeks resting against each other, smiling in their sleep.

He turned and ran to find Seth.

“It’s a miracle!” Gilead gasped. “She’s alive! I don’t know how, but ReNew’s breathing! Charlene… she brought her back.”

Seth rushed to see.

He stood in stunned silence. “I’ll be damned,” he whispered, choked with emotion. “Let them sleep. They’ve earned this.”

The camp was getting fuller by the minute. So many Fates had journeyed to come to Audubon with them. Every night since ReNew's recovery, Charlene refused to leave one soul behind. She had sent out a message every night ever since the original message, letting every Fate know where they were and that they were welcome. Some guards even showed up. Charlene was sitting on the sand dunes, knees hugged to her chest. One after another came to her—some bearing gifts, others seeking wisdom. She welcomed them all. A barely visible figure appeared close by. Fading in and out. She could tell he was torn and in deep agony, or at least pretending to be. "Hello friend, can I help you?" "No you can't," he said, voice hollow. "I'm lost." Black clouds started to form around them, curling low over the dunes like smoke from some unseen fire. "Maybe I can help you?" Charlene kept her tone light, but

  • Beyond Fate   awkward encounter

Seth and the First Spear stood there awkwardly, saying nothing at first. The cave echoed with silence, the kind that grew louder with every passing moment. Seth's thoughts spun like a storm. Where do I start? I have so many questions. “Start anywhere,” she said gently. “I’ll answer your questions.” He blinked. “That’s right—you can read minds.” “Absolutely right. And emotions, just like you and Charlene.” Her tone was soft, steady, trying to ease the tension she could feel rising in him. She sensed his nerves and didn’t want to make this any harder than it already was. “Walk with me, Seth.” They paced through the cave, the cool air brushing against them like ghosted memories. “Can I just talk plainly to you?” Seth asked, hands shoved in his pockets. “Without all the prestige? Your Majesty and whatnot. All due respect.” “Your daughter certainly does,” she grinned.

  • Beyond Fate   All new trouble

The First Spear paused at the mouth of the cave, her presence stilling the air. "I sense a disturbance," she said. "You two are needed outside. I recommend handling this yourselves." She turned to go, her tone solemn. "Remember—these Fates are no longer under the Council’s rule. Everything has changed for them. Show grace." A soft blessing: "Be well." And she departed. "Wait, GiGi!" Charlene called after her. "I wanted to ask you something—" A distant voice floated back, almost amused. "We’ll talk later, sweetheart. Go ahead—you’re needed outside. I’ll be back." Seth and Charlene emerged from the cave into chaos. The air was thick with noise—shouts, sobs, and arguments swirling into the sky. Hundreds of Fates were packed tightly together, shoving, yelling, fraying at every edge.

  • Beyond Fate   Secret passage way

The lagoon's exact depth was unknown. Mist drifted upward like soft breath from the cavern’s throat, and warm, damp air clung to their skin. The stone walls wept slowly, glistening with sheets of mineral-rich water that painted them like ancient tapestries. It frizzed Charlene’s hair mercilessly. She caught her reflection in a smooth ripple of obsidian water and groaned inwardly. If only I had my cell phone, she thought. I could check my hair. She tried to smooth down her edges, hoping Issa didn’t notice her stealthy grooming. They walked slowly along the slick stone, boots squishing softly with each step. The cave opened wider the deeper they went, the lagoon stretching endlessly before them like some subterranean sea. Charlene tilted her head. “This isn't a lagoon… It’s a whole underground lake.” Issa paused beside her, glancing around in awe. “It’s beautiful… but eerie. Like the lake’s holding its breath, waiting for somethi

He nudged a few loose pebbles over the edge with his foot. "Plop." The pebbles were immediately pulled under. "Well?" Idris asked, hands on his hips. "Well what, Uncle Idris?" Charlene blinked, confused. "Who's going in first?" he grinned. Seth rolled his eyes. "Seriously, Idris? Bro, c'mon." "What? It was your idea!" Charlene stepped closer. "I did say I could see tunnels earlier... maybe I can see them again." "Try now," Seth suggested, kneeling by the edge. Charlene leaned forward, blinking slowly. Her e

  • Beyond Fate   Do you trust me?

The first orb was high in the morning sky. Seth was still stirring, not fully awake. "Gi-Gi?" he mumbled, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Why are you in my room?" He paused, noticing her unease. "Is everything okay?" "Yes and no," she replied softly, settling on the foot of his bed. She crossed her legs, smoothing the folds of her robes, buying herself time to choose her words. Turning her head slightly away, she spoke. "How attached are you to that?" She didn’t turn back around—she just waited. Seth, half-awake, instinctively twirled the chain around his neck, fingers brushing over the rings. “Oh—this? You mean the rings? Well…” His cheeks colored. He hadn't realized she’d noticed how often he fidgeted with it. "Attached? I guess… since Tamera’s been missing, I’ve just… I keep it close. It reminds me of her." His voice dropped as he looked down at the necklace, then back up. “Grandmother… what is this about?” "Do you mind if I hold it for a while?" she asked gently. “I p

  • Beyond Fate   She's in trouble

Seth finally got his morning brew. He turned to pull out a chair, but before he could even take a sip, a hand shot out of nowhere. "Ummm—hot!" Argun winced, snatching the mug like a thief in the night. "Where did you come from?" Seth muttered, rolling his eyes. "Darn portals." Without another word, Argun downed the entire cup in one go. Steam hissed from his lips as he exhaled. "Aaah. Tasty." He slammed the empty mug down in approval. Seth blinked in disbelief. "Dude, really? Want another?" Just then, Charlene and ReNew entered the kitchen. The energy shifted instantly. Argun, without turning, spoke quietly. "Hello, little one." Shame still lingered in his voice—from the last time they’d met, when he obeyed Destiny’s command and left Charlene to fend for herself. "Argun!" Charlene ran full-force and hugged him from behind. A faint smile cracked across his face. "There’s no time for a reunion," he said, the light in his expression fading. "The First Spear needs our help."

Charlene, ReNew, and Ariel crept slowly down the corridor. Even with the light shield in hand, the darkness was so thick they could barely see more than a few feet ahead. Soldiers from the swamp. That’s where they were stored.”Charlene’s heart dropped. “Dad.”“The good news is there are only about twenty of them,” Argun continued. “The bad news? The portal has been opened several times in the last few days.”“We’ve just now located them,” Destiny added. “But the energy is still low. These are lower-level demons. • Beyond Fate   Have you returned?

Argun stood there, his eyes glowing faintly as he surveyed the damage the realm had endured over the past few hours. His gaze lingered over the fractured landscape, broken and scarred from an event that felt unnatural. A portal opened before him, revealing the vast, desolate dunes. A massive crater marred the ground. "This wasn’t a normal occurrence," he thought, his mind racing. "This was supernatural." With a heavy heart, Argun closed the portal and returned home, hoping, praying, that she had come back. He had rehearsed the words he would say to her a thousand times in his mind, imagined this moment over and over, each time more desperate. If he had just one more chance, he swore, he wouldn’t let it slip away. His failure to act before ate at him like a wound. The waiting was agony. He searched the realm with his mind, but there was no trace of her. "Come back to me, my Destiny," he whispered under his breath. She had be

She knelt, fingers sifting through the hot desert sands. She knew them—each grain, each breath of wind, every living soul that walked this realm. And yet… something was wrong. A chill crept up her spine. Something cloaked its presence from her. She couldn't see it, couldn't trace it. She closed her eyes, reaching out with her mind's eye—searching the threads of every soul, every breath, every whisper. Nothing. Whatever it was… it was dark. And soulless. She turned her gaze toward the void and spoke, her voice laced with power. "You do not belong here." "You are not one of mine." "How did you come to be here?" A voice echoed back from the darkness, smooth and moc

Slapping thick gobs of mud off his uniform, he muttered, “The next time we meet, I swear—I’ll kill him.” His jaw clenched as he thought of Seth, besting him again. His boots squelched with every step, caked in muck from head to toe. He looked like a soldier who had crawled out of a grave. What excuse do I feed them this time? he wondered bitterly. What happened to my guard? As if summoned by his dread, a soldier approached briskly. “The Supreme Leader would like to speak to you, sir,” the guard said with a crisp salute. Haroon rolled his eyes.
