Chapter 3

Kara’s eyes swarmed with tears and her brows scrunched, “Honey, how can you say that? We both wanted a child, you told me how excited you would be, how happy your mother would be now that I am carrying your child---“

“Abort the child!” Kara turned quickly when she heard these words behind her, she turned to see her mother-in-law walk into the room.

“What?” Her expression closed up and her eyes flickered with tears in them, she turned her gaze to meet that of Carlos who glanced from his mother to Kara. “Say something, honey!”

“My mother is right, abort the baby!” Carlos told her, his eyes not leaving her face and Kara stepped back as her face went white.

She curled her hand into a fist, her fingers cutting deep into her skin as she looked at Carlos writhing in agony. “What? It’s our baby we are talking about here Carlos!” A throbbing vein appeared in her neck.

Her breathing became heavy. “All this is a joke, tell me you are joking honey.” She sniffled and shook her head. “I forgive you, honey, I forgive you for cheating on me, for even saying that you love her.” She glanced at the lady on the bed. “I forgive you, so let’s just forget about all these, she can go and we can be the happy family we are, our child can be---“

“I said I love her!” Carlos shouted, but Kara shook her head, she wanted to believe this was one of those bad nightmares that she woke up from.

“Honey…”

“Abort the baby!” His words struck her heart like a lightning bolt and the color drained out of her face. “We are getting a divorce anyway, so abort the child!”

“I won’t!” Kara screamed, her forehead creased in anger, they spoke of her child like it was lifeless, a baby whose heartbeat she had heard. “I won’t abort my child,” She clenched her jaw, tears streamed down her cheek.

Her eyes burned in anger when she looked from the lady on the bed to her mother-in-law and then at her husband, a man who should have her back.

“If you want a divorce, then let’s do it, but I won’t abort a living baby!” Tears shimmered in her eyes.

“Kara, Carlos loves Lydia now and not you, you have to abort that child, otherwise, even if you agree to divorce, I won’t let Carlos leave a single penny to you.” Mrs. Rita told her.

Just then, Lydia who lay on the bed left the bed and stood close to Carlos slowly leaning on Carlos's body, her hand sliding over Carlos’s shoulder as she caressed it, her eyes met Kara’s and a smirk ran down her lips, all these just to humiliate Kara and show her how close she was with her husband.

Kara’s shoulders slouched when Carlos placed his hand on Lydia’s hand rather than pushing her away, and to humiliate her further, Carlos smiled at Lydia who smiled back, she care less about what was happening to her, or how his action hurt her.

She clenched her chest, her lips trembled, and she parted it about to say something, but pressed them together again, the pain in her heart made her unable to voice a single word out.

Frozen in terror, she recalled how her life had turned out when she was in her fourth year at the university, her brother suddenly cut off all contact with their family, and then her adoptive parents became seriously ill.

She had suffered the blow of her adoptive parent’s illness and death, and she was finally alone, hurt and alone with no one around since everyone around her left.

Then she went to work in a coffee shop, gradually forgetting all about the pain and her dreams, but Carlos showed up, made her believe he would be with her forever, made her believe in love and made her feel like she would never be left alone in the world again,

But it was all the same, it was coming back again, the pain of being abandoned, the pain of being left alone, not only did she have to feel this pain, but she had to see it play right in front of her all over again.

Was it too hard to ask for a better life?

Perhaps this was a reminder that her life should be a mess, perhaps this was the reason she was abandoned by her real parents.

Kara slowly touched her stomach and rubbed it slowly, her child, when the doctor first told her of her baby, her heart was overwhelmed with joy, but now she had to abort the child, she shut her eyes and tears rolled down her cheek.

“My lawyer is already waiting downstairs with the divorce papers,” Carlos stated again and Kara opened her eyes and looked at his face.

He was a father, he was her husband, but there was no expression in his eyes, he was expressionless as he spoke of these words so lightly, was he that happy to want to get rid of her?

If he hadn’t loved her in the past, then she would have said he was cold and heartless, but it was all so confusing right now, he loved her, it was no pretence, her heart would have felt it, he was warm to her, caring and listens to her always, but right now he looked different.

“I guess people change in seconds.” She muttered softly, her brother had been like that too, he was caring and loving, but one day he woke up and left and they never reached him again.

Kara wiped the tears from her eyes, there was no point in crying when his mind was already made up, everyone in the room was against her, how could she win this argument, she wanted to give her child a better life, but how can she when she has nothing but a husband who has now betrayed her.

“Fine, let’s get a divorce and the child, let’s abort it.”
