Chapter 2

Kara’s smile flattered, her lips trembled and the colour drained out of her face, her loving husband, the man who had never joked with her, who had announced to the world that she was his wife was holding another woman and kissing her.

Hearing the sound of the door and the gasp, Carlos turned his gaze to see Kara, looking pale and betrayed. “Kara.” For a moment sadness lingered in his eyes, but they were quickly replaced by coldness.

“Why?” These were the first words that came out from Kara’s lips, her eyes were clouded with tears that rolled down effortlessly.

Carlos rolled out of bed and the lady he was with adjusted on the bed and looked at Kara, there was no sense of guilt in her eyes, but a smug smile curved up at the corner of her lips.

“Why are you---“ A knot rose in Kara’s throat, and her gaze fell on Carlos again, he loved her, he was in love with her so why was he treating her this way? Why was he doing this? She just couldn’t understand.

They had met after work the previous day, they had even had dinner out, and he tucked her into bed, they had both had early morning sex today and she had treated him to the best well-cooked breakfast, so seeing him with another woman just didn’t make sense.

“Why are you doing this?” Her lips trembled, tears rolled down her cheek as she looked at the man who had been the source of her happiness after she lost everyone.

Carlos's expression hardened as he took out some photos from the stool next to the bed and threw them at Kara. “You have no right to judge me when you are no different!” He shunned her, pointing at the pictures on the ground, his eyes large in anger.

“What?” Kara felt confused, she didn’t understand what he was talking about, he cheated on her not the other way round, she should be the one getting angry and not him.

Her gaze lowered to the floor and her forehead creased, she slowly reached for the picture and her lips parted in shock to see a photo of her in bed with a strange man.

“I have already found out you had cheated on me!” He looked away from her in disgust.

“This is not true.” Kara’s eyes scanned the picture. “I don’t know who this is.” She looked up at Carlos. “This picture isn’t real, it can’t be, I never cheated on you.” Her breathing became heavy, it was hard to understand any of it.

“That is evidence Kara, you can’t deny the fact that the person in that photo is you!” Carlos shouted and she staggered back shaking her head profusely.

“Carlos, it’s not…” She wanted to say something but he interrupted her.

“I don’t want to see you anymore Kara, I don’t love you anymore!” He shouted and Kara froze.

These words came as a shock to her, he doesn’t love her? He had just told her earlier before she left this morning that he loves her, so how can someone’s heart just change within a few minutes?

She shook her head. “That’s not true, this is all a misunderstanding.” She sniffled and tossed the picture aside, “Carlos, all this is a misunderstanding, I never cheated on you, and you can’t tell me you don’t love me anymore…” She moved closer to hold him, but he pushed her hand away.

“I love this woman and not you.” He pointed at the lady lying on their matrimonial bed and she sat up, her lips curved up in a smirk as she looked at Kara. “Let’s have a divorce.”

These words unravelled Kara whose heart skipped a beat, hot tears rolled down her cheek. “What?” She looked at the man who had been her first love when she thought she was alone in the world after losing her adoptive parents and her brother, Carlos showed up like a guardian angel in the coffee shop she worked at, and that was how they both fell in love and got married.

She could still remember his promise on the altar, he had promised to love her until his dying breath, to protect her and grow old with her as husband and wife.

How can love and promise hold little value to him? How can he say he would end the love they had both taken so long to nurture? They even had to overcome his mother’s desire not to let her into the family, but he wants to end it all now.

Kara searched his eyes, they looked so serious that she hated the look in them, where had the warmth gone? Where have those eyes that have love just for her gone?

She couldn’t let it happen, she didn’t want to believe it. “Tell me it’s not true.” She searched his eyes. “Tell me you won’t just end things like that!” She grabbed his hand but he pushed her away again, and this time she fell on the ground.

She winced in pain but quickly got to her feet. “Carlos, we are having a baby!” She immediately disclosed it. Perhaps that would make him reconsider his decision, this would make him happy and he would apologize to her and send this lady away.

She searched her bag and took out the medical report. “See… I am carrying your child.” Carlos’s eyes dilated as he looked at the report she held, his lips parted in surprise. “We will be having our first child, you will be a father, so don’t do this.”

She searched his eyes, her lips trembled as she waited for his response, she could hear her heart racing loudly under her chest and her hand felt clammy.

“My child?” He asked and she nodded. “Don’t make me laugh.” Carlos scoffed and his expression changed from surprise to disgust Kara felt a sharp pain in her chest as she was heartbroken to see the reaction on his face.
