Alicia stood in front of the mirror, checking herself out for the one hundredth time. Her husband Adams had informed her that his parents invited them over for dinner tonight, and she was so nervous because she knew what his parents were like, so she needed to look really presentable to avoid getting them upset because they seemed to find little or no mistakes in anything she did.
She had been married to Adams for 3 years now and there was no sign of pregnancy. They've gone for different kinds of tests and the doctors told them they were okay. She had no idea why she wasn't getting pregnant.
Adams had been patient with her, but she knew it was all an act. Time came, and he started joining his parents to curse at her and abuse her.
She's an author and her career as an author was going downhill, she didn't want her marriage to follow suit either, but there was no choice. It was going downhill for sure.
A knock on her door jolted her out of her reverie, she took a deep breath before going to answer the door. When she opened it, she met the house help standing outside.
“Good evening Ma'am. Mr. Adams is waiting for you downstairs.” She informed her.
“Alright, I'll be there soon.” Alicia replied, while managing to force out a smile.
The maid nodded before leaving.
Alicia hurriedly went back to check herself out, she didn't look bad and was satisfied with her appearance, she just hoped her in-laws won't have anything bad to say.
She hurriedly grabbed her necklace and put it on, then she took her purse before exiting her room and going downstairs to meet her husband.
When she got downstairs, Adams didn't even spare her a glance and simply went outside. Although this act did hurt her, but she was already used to his cold behavior by now, she hurriedly went after him to avoid getting scolded.
The drive to his parents' house was silent, all through the ride, Adams didn't say a single word to her, nor did he even look at her, she wanted to strike a conversation with him, but she knew better not to since she knows he's only going to ignore her.
They finally arrived at his parents' house, when the car came to a stop, he simply got out, not bothering to wait for her. It's as if she's invisible to him.
Their marriage wasn't always like this, everything was once so perfect until Adam's parents began to demand for a grandchild, at first, Adams wasn't bothered by this, but his parents' words eventually got to him, and he also joined them in pressuring her to give him an heir. When she failed to give him a child, that was when her once blissful marriage turned sour.
By the time she went inside, she met them already seated in the dining room and the maids serving them dinner.
“Good evening Mom. Good evening Dad.” She greeted, but Adams' mother glared dangerously at her.
“It's Mrs. Bridget or Ma'am to you, or do I look like your mother!” Mrs. Bridget snapped. “Do we look like your parents, or are you trying to curse us!?”
“I…I'm sorry, Ma'am.”
“Never in your life make the mistake of calling me Mom or calling my husband Dad, we'll never have been so unfortunate to birth a barren woman like you, you're nothing but a promiscuous woman, and you've brought shame and disgrace upon this family!” She cussed.
Her words pierced deep into Alicia's heart, causing her so much pain.
“I'm not a barren Mom, and it's not my fault that I haven't been able to bear children, God is the one who gives kids, so please stop saying such words to me every single time. It hurts hearing those words from you.” She cried.
Mrs. Bridget scoffed loudly. “Don't think your stupid crocodile tears will make me feel bad or hate you less, Alicia. And I'm quite sure you're familiar with the saying that goes 'the truth always hurts'. What I'm saying to you is the truth,” Mrs. Bridget retorted. “You're just a barren woman, you have no womb and everything around you is failing, you're just surrounded by negativity, and it was a huge mistake that my son Adams got married to a shameless and barren woman like you, now you've brought nothing but shame and disgrace to us!” She spat.
“All my mates brag about their daughter in-law giving them grandchildren, but you! I can't even brag about one child coming from you, just one! Whatever's happening to you right now is simply what you deserve, and I pray my son's eyes finally open, and he does the right thing by getting rid of a disgrace like you!” She seethed.
Alicia kept on shaking her head as hot tears streamed down her cheeks. She looked at Adams hoping he would say something, anything at all to defend her, but he remained unbothered and was simply eating his dinner. She looked at his father and the eyes that stared back at her was one filled with nothing but disappointment.
She couldn't bear to stay there any longer, she ran out of their crying bitterly.
The night was so cold and Alicia was literally freezing outside, but she didn't seem to care, after all, it wouldn't matter to anyone if she died from this cold.
It took a lot of time before Adams finally came out, he only looked at her briefly before going to the car.
Alicia stood up from the staircase she was sitting on, she wiped off her tears before going to meet him.
Once again, the ride home was in total and complete silence. When they returned home, Adams left for his room and didn't bother talking to her.
Alicia went to sit on the couch crying softly when her phone suddenly rang, she sniffed before fetching it from her purse, seeing it was her Doctor calling, she hurriedly answered the call.
“Hello Doctor.”
“Mrs. Alicia…”
“The pregnancy test results are out.”
Alicia's car pulled up in front of the hospital, she was so nervous that she could barely sleep last night, and the minute the sun came out, she got ready quickly and drove down to the hospital.Adams had no idea that she even took this test, she woke up one morning feeling so sick, and all her symptoms were the signs of pregnancy, she even googled most of the things to be sure and even though what she thought was confirmed, she didn't want to get her hopes up only for it to come shattering again. She had secretly gone to the hospital and explained everything to her Doctor, but the Doctor had then told her to take a test before they could conclude on anything at all, and although she was skeptical about it at first that it even took a lot of talking to convince her to take the pregnancy test. She waited in her car for some time as she tried to calm her beating heart. When she calmed down, she finally came out of the car and went inside the hospital. She was already familiar with the
Alicia stood frozen, she couldn't believe her ears, it's like she didn't hear him clearly.“W…what? A divorce?” She asked, to be sure she heard correctly. “You can't be serious about this, Adams, tell me you're joking, please tell me you don't mean this.” She pleaded, tears rolling down her cheeks.“I'm damn serious about this, Alicia, I'm done with this goddamn marriage! Done having a disgrace like you for a wife! I'm so done and tired with everything! You hear me, Alicia, I'm done!” He yelled, and she flinched. In their three years of marriage, Alicia had never seen him this angry before, she couldn't even recognize the man standing in front of her.“You can't do this to me, Adams! Not after everything we've been through together, are you simply going to throw all that away, are you going to forget everything just like that? All because you believe I'm barren,” She cried. “I can take all your silent treatments towards me, I can even take the cold shoulders you give me, but this? A d
It took a few days for Adams and Alicia's divorce to finally be finalized, and Alicia had to wait until the divorce was finalized before she could leave Adams home.On the day that she was finally leaving, the joy Adams felt knew no bounds, he was supposed to go to work that day, but he didn't, and it was all because he wanted to watch her leave, the woman he considered a disgrace and shame. As Alicia struggled to bring down her suitcase, Adams was just standing at the door watching her every move, he was impatient to see her leave his home and kept on clicking his tongue in discomfort due to the time she was taking in bringing her suitcase down.“Can you just hurry already!” He snapped. “How long will it take for you to finally get yourself out of here!?” He questioned with an eye roll.Alicia heaved a deep breath, it wasn't like her suitcase was that heavy, but the little act alone seemed to have tired her out. She waited a while to catch her breath before finally bringing it down.
Adams totally forgot about the main reason he came to the hospital in the first place, at this point his flu wasn't even important anymore. He had hurriedly left the Doctor's office and was now outside, standing beside his car.“A…Alicia is pregnant, Alicia was carrying my child.” He kept on repeating, while struggling to breathe at the same time. He placed his hand on his chest, then he bent down a little as he tried to catch his breath.Everything started coming to him in waves, he then remembered what happened the night he gave her the divorce papers. When he walked into the house, he was surprised to see her waiting for him with a huge smile on her face, and it was visible that she was excited about something, but he didn't seem to care then and was only concerned about getting rid of her.He remembered how she had wanted to tell him something and was even holding a paper, but he rudely waved her off and presented the divorce papers to her instead. Even after all the things he sai
"No Mike, that can't be true, she can't be gone, she just can't!" Adams replied, refusing to believe the information Mike has just told him."I'm sorry Adams, but that's just the truth, Alicia already left this city and no one can blame her for that, not after what happened.""This isn't the time to judge me Mike, I need to find Alicia, you must do everything possible to find out where she traveled to. I can't let her go Mike, I just can't.""Do you even hear yourself Adams? Well I'm sorry to say this but locating her is going to be impossible, I would have asked you to wait and see if she's ever going to return but then what's the possibility that she's ever going to come back to this country."Adams heaved a deep breath, then he slowly sat on his bed, he was starting to have a terrible headache and his conscience was now eating him up, he blames himself for everything and if only he could just turn back the hands of time, he's more than willing to change everything, he's never going

Adams abruptly stood up from his seat. "Where did you get this from?" He asked, not taking his eyes off the flier in his hand.Mike had a huge smile on his face, he was still bubbling with excitement. "On my way to work, I saw some people handing this fliers out and there was also a huge banner on display, I was going to look away but the name caught my attention, I couldn't even recognize her at first Adams, if it weren't for her name.""She's changed a lot Mike, she looks so different and...." He trailed."Successful." Mike finished and Adams nodded in reply."When is this event taking place? I can't wait to see her, I really need to see her.""It's in a week's time Adams and also, there's something else you should know about." Mike replied and that made Adams look at him."What's it?" He asked.Mike fetched his phone from his pocket first. "After seeing this, I couldn't resist making a research about her and I also saw this...." He showed a picture to Adams.Adams eyes widen in sho
Adams car pulled up in the hall where the event was taking place, when he got down, he heaved a deep breath before going in. When Adams went in, he was shocked to see so much people in attendance, the crowd in the hall was just too much, he tried his possible best to sight Alicia, but he couldn't see her anywhere and that made him groan in frustration, there's no way he's going to find her with this much crowd in the hall.Soon, a man came up stage and asked everyone to settle down, which they did, he gave his speech which took longer than Adams had expected, in fact, none of what the man was saying was even entering his head, all he wants is to see Alicia, nothing else taking place here concerns him at all. When the man was finally done giving his speech, Adam sighed in relief, soon, the man mentioned Alicia's name and the sole reason for this event, the mention of her name alone made the crowd go wild and it took a whole lot to get them to calm down, when they were calm, the man f
