LOGIN“I was safe until you messaged me in that bar.” I remove the bandage. “Explain how this fucking happened and was that creepy dude a vampire or did that waitress bitch spike my whiskey?”
He rubs his hand over his face. “Why must you be so difficult?”
“Why are you so protective and bossy? You don’t even know me.”
“Do you always answer a question with a question?”
“When it comes to you, I do. So what happened?”
“You should have let me walk you to your room, but you didn’t listen.” I feel my cheeks warm because I remember not wanting Frank near me because he made me feel hot and weird, much like he is doing now. “The creepy guy followed you as I said that he would. He grabbed you. You tried to fight back, but he held you too tightly. His fangs were on your neck when I got there. You must have run from him and taken a wrong turn because you were in a dead-end alley instead of being at your motel. I got there as fast as I could and got him off of you. You had trouble walking, so I carried you here and changed you into my shirt because your dress was ripped and covered in blood. It is in the trash can if you don’t believe me,” he explained.
I got up on wobbly legs and looked into the trash can. He was telling the truth. “Fine, I believe you. But why me?”
His face contorts as if what he is about to say pains him. “We have a treaty. They aren’t supposed to hunt in city limits. You are human and an outsider, so you are like crack to a recovering addict to young vampires like him.”
“Are you Buffy or something?”
He chuckles, and it twists my insides. “Oh, darlin’, I am all man and I only fight when necessary.” That made my cheeks heat, and I had to look away. This guy might be infuriating, but he makes me feel funny in ways that I haven’t in a long time, if ever. “Now, go get dressed so that we can leave. Despite how good you look in my shirt, I doubt your family would think the same.”
I go wobble into my bathroom and shut the door. I sniff the dress that I had hanging up. It smelled okay and didn’t look bad. I had to wash it because I spilled coffee on myself trying to avoid hitting someone’s white dog when I came into town late last night. I walk out and throw him his shirt. “Take it, but I am not leaving Darkness Falls yet.”
Frank looks at me with an intense, studying gaze that makes my heart pound. I don’t want to tell him the full reason that I am here. He will think that I am insane because my hunch is just that…pure insanity. Although after nearly becoming a snack for a vampire, my hunch is sounding less and less crazy. I want to lie to him, but this voice inside my head makes me want to trust him. He did save me from a vampire, so he might understand. “I am looking for my father. All of my efforts have led me here to Darkness Falls. I found a note from him addressed to my mother and a picture of them surrounded by people, long before I was born. My mother became ill before my fifteenth birthday. My father swore he could fix it and that he needed time. It has been ten years, and it is as if he disappeared without a trace. I have been all over these last few months to find him. My mother died a few months ago, so he is the only family that I might have left. So I need to find out what happened to him, even if I'm a horrible daughter, is why he never returned.”
Frank nods. “What is his name?”
“Ed Thomas. My research said he spent a lot of his life here. Have you heard of him?”
“I am not sure, but chances are some of the elders might. I can ask around and text you later. It is time to go,” he urges.
“No, I am not going anywhere. So if you discover something, you can tell me face-to-face.”
“Can’t you understand that I am trying to help you? Why are you so damn stubborn?” he says with a near imperceptible growl.
“I deserve to know if my father is dead or alive. If this town killed him, I deserve to know that, too.”
Frank stands. I get up from the edge of the bed where I had been sitting, but I feel a warm weight on my shoulder. Gently, but with controlled strength, Frank pushes me down. It is now impossible for me to stand unless I want to hurt myself or have to resort to kicking him in the balls. Which I might. I glare up at him. “What the fucking hell, Frank. You couldn’t get me to go using your words, so now you have resorted to getting physical. The old Grace might have submitted, but this one doesn’t. Let me go!”
He leans down. “Grace, sugar, trust me if I wanted to get physical, it would be far more than this.” He looks into my eyes. “Now, listen to me, sweetheart.” His face is so close that it makes the air feel suffocating and electric all at the same time. But I won’t back down, I won’t be intimidated by any man…not anymore. “You will go pack your suitcase. I will leave to give you a few minutes, but when I return, I am driving you home.”
His voice isn’t threatening, but it is deep and commanding. His proximity is intoxicating, and I can’t decide if I hate it or enjoy it. “We will see about that.”
Frank takes in a deep breath as a low growl comes from deep within his broad chest. He bites the inside of his cheek as if he is trying to keep from saying something. He gives me a long, hard look before he pulls away and turns toward the door. “See you shortly, Grace.”
I pace the room as I tug at my hair. “My whole world has been turned upside down because of you!” I can feel the anger bubbling inside of me like a pot ready to boil over. Frank reaches for my hand, but I brush his away. “Just don’t touch me right now!” I run to the door to escape him, but he catches up to me quickly. “Darlin’, you need to calm down,” he said. However, his words just ignited an inferno of rage within me. I lashed out and attacked him. He dodges. “It looks like my little wolf cub is having a fit,” he taunts, which just angers me more. I hit him. It barely grazes him. “I know that you are angry, but hitting me won’t solve anything.”“Maybe not, but it will make me feel better, you fucking arrogant jerk!”I kept trying to hit him. He grabs my hands, firmly but not painfully. “Please, stop. I will not fight you.”In a final burst of anger and frustration, I push him aside and rush outside. I run but stop suddenly. The mark heats and pulls me to look back. It is as if i
He is going to kill me when he sees this. I had a “little” breakdown, and now it looks like a bomb went off. Chairs are overturned, books scattered, and the curtains now resemble a tattered flag on a battlefield. I catch my reflection in a cracked mirror. My hair is a mess, and my eyes are wild with anger and confusion. This isn’t me. What has gotten into me? I turn and look out the huge window. The moon shines above, and I feel both peace and turmoil. The room is eerily quiet until I hear the door softly creak open. Frank enters cautiously. He chuckles as he surveys the chaos that I stand amidst. “Looks like you had one hell of a rockstar party without me.”I roll my eyes. “Not funny. I lost control, and I don’t like it.”“Darlin’, it happens, especially when you aren’t used to your wolf. You will get used to it and gain control, I promise. Here, this will help.” He flips the table over and places a bag on it. It smells so good. “I thought you might like some dinner. Stress makes wo
I scour the room looking for anything that could give me answers, but I don’t find anything. I tired myself out trying to search for anything in the books in this room, and I collapsed on the bed. I wasn’t sure how long I had been asleep, but Frank still hadn’t returned. I messaged him and he said he was still cleaning up the mess that I had made. I rolled my eyes as I typed, “It wasn’t me. It was those fucking blood-thristy vampires.”He sent back a laughing emoji. “You have a knack for finding trouble and causing chaos, but I will give it to you, you certainly left an impression.”“That doesn’t make me feel any better. I need to talk to you about something I found, too,” I reply.“Then don’t leave the house tonight, and we can talk,” he responded.“I hadn’t planned to. Besides, you locked me in, remember?”“Sugar, you can’t lock a werewolf in four walls.”“Well, waiting is driving me up the wall, so I guess you will find me on the roof when you return.”“Darlin’, I know it is tough
“Sweetheart, I need you to calm down. I have asked around. He isn’t locked up anywhere.”“Did you think that maybe a vampire drank him dry and then dumped his body in the swamp?”“Vampires can’t drink werewolves’ blood, especially an alpha’s. It automatically repulses them and is why vampires prefer to hunt humans or drink from blood bags.”“They could have still killed him, right? I mean, you guys can die even if you are immortal, right?”“That is possible. I also think that if they knew that you had werewolf blood in you that they wouldn’t have tried to drink your blood. They got confused because werewolves are forbidden to mate with anyone who isn’t a werewolf.”I frown. “That is ridiculous. If you love someone, it should’t matter. Also, isn’t there some kind of goddess you all worship that supposedly sets all of this up?”“This isn’t a movie, sweetheart. Long ago, they did believe in gods and had rituals, but all of that hasn’t been practiced in centuries. We have rules, and no cr
He studies me. “Keeping you in? This isn’t captivity, sugar.” He gets up and opens the door. He drags in my suitcase before he shuts it. How did he know where it was? I hauled it with me and left it in a bush before I went to that house. He chuckles. “I can smell you, sweetheart.”I roll my eyes. “I suggest nose plugs, then.”He laughs. “It is nothing bad. You will get used to it.”“Maybe because being constantly attacked seems to be my status quo now.”“What a coincidence because saving your ass has recently become mine.”“Listen, thanks and all, but I never asked for your help other than learning about my father.”Frank presses the back of his hand to his forehead as if he’s a damsel in distress. Is he fucking mocking me? “Oh, Frank…thank you…Thank you…please don’t leave me. Those were your words before you passed out. Don’t you remember?”I laugh. “As if! I studied about this shit, but never thought it was real or at least is still real. Myths and legends are based on truths, and I
Frank's POVAll of this is both amazing and terrifying. This woman is linked to this town and she is linked to me too. I just don’t know how it is possible. An Alpha like myself can only mate with a pureblooded werewolf of similiar rank, yet…yet…fuck!I was going to just grab her a sandwich, but I need more time to think. I go to Maman’s Kitchen which is a cajun fusion restaurant. I can sit at their bar and eat while I figure out how to tell her that soon I won’t be able to contain myself around her. Ugh! “Dearie, you look troubled,” Adele says. She is an older werewolf who came through here searching for her mate. She leaves and returns a lot. I don’t expect her to stay forever because now I understand what the pull to a mate is like.“I am a bit, but I will figure it out.”“I hear talking helps? I might not be your mother, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t lend an ear,” she winks, “Or two.”“Hypothetical, if you discovered that your mate isn’t the same as you, would you still mate
