Frederick’s POV

I couldn't stop thinking about the look on Eloise's face when we discovered the truth about the potion.

The fear in her eyes had followed me back to my chambers, settling into my mind until I could barely stand to remain in one place. Every time I closed my eyes, I remembered how close we had come to losing her, how easily someone had slipped poison into something she had accepted without suspicion.

And I had done nothing to prevent it.

I stood by the window, staring out at the

Fredrick’s POVThe warmth of her body beside mine was comforting. It was nice to just lie in her arms without any worries. I wished every day could be like this…Everything was fine until I felt her arms wrap around me slowly.I wouldn’t have thought anything of it, but her hands slowly trailed their way across my body in a manner that was far from innocent.I caught her hand in mine before it could go any further, but when I looked in her eyes, there was a fire in them that burned to my very core.“Natalia,” I said, not realizing how breathless the words sounded. My body was responding to her already. I felt like a dog in heat. When it came to her, I couldn’t for the life of me find even a thread of self-control left.I didn’t know what I wanted to ask her, but I knew I needed her… and I needed her now.Maybe she read my mind because the very next second, I felt her straddle me, sitting right on top of the bulge that sat right between my legs. She looked right into my eyes as she gro

I finally lifted my arms and pulled her against me, burying my nose in the crook of her neck. She settled into my embrace without hesitation, her hands resting against my back. I held her more tightly than I intended, drawing comfort from the fact that she was here, that she was safe, and that she had not decided to walk away from me.I lowered my head and pressed a kiss to her forehead.“Thank you,” I whispered. She smiled against my chest.“You're welcome.”For a little while, neither of us spoke. I only held her, allowing the silence to settle around us as the tension in my shoulders slowly eased. My chest was heavier now, but it wasn’t with guilt or anything like that this time. It was heavy with something else… an emotion that blossomed only when I had her in my arms like this… maybe this was what love felt like.Eventually, Natalia drew back and took my hand, leading me towards the bed.“Sit down,” she instructed.I raised an eyebrow. “Are you giving me orders now?” I asked play

Fredrick’s POV“Scared of what?” she asked quietly. I couldn’t even bring myself to look her in the eyes.I swallowed, dragging a hand through my hair.“Protecting people is the only thing I have ever known how to do,” I admitted, my voice rougher than I intended. “It was practically beaten into me from the moment I was old enough to understand what my responsibilities were. Protect the kingdom. Protect its people. Never let anyone under your care suffer because you weren't strong enough to prevent it.”I looked away, unable to bear the understanding I feared I might find in her eyes.“And now I cannot even do that properly.”My throat tightened as the memories returned. Eloise's frightened expression, the poisoned potion, the realization that someone we had welcomed into the palace had been working against us.“I keep thinking about what could have happened to her. What would have happened if we hadn't discovered the truth in time?” I shook my head. “And then I look at you, and all I

Fredrick’s POV"I said maybe you should go back to Eldagore. You would be better off there than staying here with someone who cannot even perform his duties properly." The look on her face pierced my very soul."I thought that was what you wanted," she said quietly. Her voice was so different from before that I almost wished she would shout at me instead."What?""For me to leave." She shook her head, and the hurt in her expression sharpened. "I thought that was what you wanted, Frederick. But you don't get to make that decision for me simply because you're frightened."I straightened."Frightened?""Yes, frightened!" Her voice rose, and she took a step towards me. "You're so busy convincing yourself that you're a failure that you haven't even stopped to consider what I want."I clenched my jaw."I know my own capabilities, Natalia. I know what I am capable of, and right now, I have every reason to question whether I am competent enough to handle what lies ahead.""And I am telling yo

Every time I closed my eyes, I remembered how close we had come to losing her, how easily someone had slipped poison into something she had accepted without suspicion. And I had done nothing to prevent it.I stood by the window, staring out at the palace grounds without really seeing them. My hands were clasped behind my back, but my fingers kept curling into fists no matter how many times I forced them to relax.I had spent the better part of the week thinking about how I would tell Ophelia that I wanted her to become my bride. I had imagined the conversation a hundred different ways, wondering whether she would smile, whether she would hesitate, and whether she would finally understand that I had never considered her merely a maid.Whil

Eloise’s POVI barely had time to process what had just been said before Zipporah rushed towards me, her eyes wide with alarm.“What do you mean?” she demanded, gripping my arms. “Who tried to kill you?”I flinched at the urgency in her voice. My gaze instinctively shifted towards Aya, who stood a short distance away, and suddenly, I found myself questioning everything I thought I understood about the situation.“But if she wanted to kill me, why was she asking about Frederick?” I asked, my voice rising with confusion. “She told me Frederick wanted me dead. Why would she say that if she was the one trying to kill me?”The words came out faster than I could control them. My thoughts were racing, each one colliding with the next until I could barely make sense of anything. I had thought I was dealing with a misunderstanding, something that could be explained if I only found the right words. But what if it wasn’t?My chest tightened as the possibility settled over me. I tried to draw in
