RILEY

My cheeks burned with both embarrassment and panic, and my mind raced as I speedily tried to find an answer.

“It’s nothing, Domi,” I said quickly. “Don’t worry about it.”

Domi looked at me curiously for a moment, almost seeming like he wanted to press the issue, but as an exciting, colorful scene appeared on the television, he returned his focus to the cartoon.

I released an exhale of relief and glared at Lisa.

“Please don’t say those things in front of my son,” I said with a lowered voic

RILEYHybrid? What in the world did she mean by hybrid?Confusion coursed through my mind as I looked between Killian, Catherine, and the large men behind her.“What are you talking about?” I demanded.“Catherine, you shouldn’t get involved in this,” Killian gritted out, his voice as tense as his shoulders. “This has nothing to do with you or your Pack-”“But Killian,” Catherine interrupted, her pretty features twisted into something like hurt. “This is my business too. We’re getting married. Besides… don’t you believe in the alliance? I want to help you, and I care about Dominic too.”“There’s no need,” Killian said shortly. “Raphael has a plan for it.”My eyes flitted between them, and then I blurted out my thoughts with disdain. “Why are you talking about my son like I’m not even here?”All eyes fell on me, and my anger swelled in me like a living thing. What in the world were they arguing about, and what did Killian mean?“What plan?” I demanded, holding their attention. “And why

RILEYMy anxiety spiked as I tried to wake Domi up, shaking him carefully. “Domi? Domi, wake up.”When he didn’t seem to react to me at all, I shook him a little harder, speaking a little louder.“Dominic,” I said firmly. “Dominic, wake up for Mommy. Come on, you need to wake up!”My son shivered, the low rumbles continuing to rise from his chest. The more he struggled for air, the more fear coiled within me, and I pressed the emergency button to signal a nurse.“Lisa!” I called out, knowing that she was somewhere nearby. “Lisa, help!”A moment later, Lisa rushed into the room, and when she saw Dominic’s condition, her dark eyes widened into saucers.“I’ll get Alpha!” she exclaimed, and then she took off running.Tears pricked at my eyes as I waited for help to arrive, my hands shaking as I tried to keep Domi steady.“You’re okay, baby,” I said, trying to soothe him and myself at the same time. “It’s going to be okay, baby.”The medical team arrived moments later, a handful of nurses

RILEYAs the car slowly pulled up to the medical center’s bay, I gently patted Domi’s arm.“Wake up, sweetie,” I coaxed him softly, pressing a kiss to his temple. “We’re back.”Domi shifted a little, but didn’t wake up, his eyes shut tightly. I smiled down at him. The poor little boy was surely tuckered out from all of the excitement. The rest of the day at the amusement park had gone by without a hitch. Domi rode every ride to his heart’s content, running and playing like this blood disease was a thing of the past.He was behaving like any four-year-old would, not like a kid who had been bound to a medical center bed up until now.It had been a wonderful day, and I was just as ready to get to bed and wind down after everything.“Come on, Domi, let’s get you to bed,” I whispered.Once the car came to a complete stop, Killian climbed out of the vehicle. I deftly unbuckled Domi’s car seat and was about to lift him out when the door opened, and Killian leaned in.“I’ll carry him,” he mur

RILEY“Are we going to Wonderland, Mommy?” Domi asked me as the car continued down the road.“Not exactly, honey,” I let him down gently. “But… we are going to an amusement park downtown! Doesn’t that sound fun?”He pouted a little, tugging at my sleeve. “You promised that we’d go to Wonderland with Auntie Hannah when I wasn’t sick anymore.”“Well, you’re not completely better yet, Domi,” I explained as I adjusted his seatbelt. “You’re getting better, but not enough to travel for a long time, and Wonderland is too far away. But we’re going to have so much fun today, okay? And once you’re all better, we’ll go to Wonderland and ride as many rides as you want.”Domi took a deep breath, and his little shoulders slumped for a moment before he nodded. “Okay, Mommy.”“Cheer up, bud,” I teased him softly. “There’s all kinds of fun things we can do at the smaller park, and I’ll buy you a biiiiiig thing of cotton candy. How does that sound?”Domi grinned. “Yes, please.”I ruffled his hair and t

RILEYAs Killian’s lips drew closer to mine, my mind returned to the dream. The rational side of me knew that I needed to push him off, break free from his hold, but the illogical part of me yearned for more of his touch. My breathing was unsteady, my body eager as the sweetness of his breath ghosted over me.Just as our lips were about to press against one another’s, the sliding door flew open.“Don’t be mean to Mommy!” Domi declared, and the speed at which we pulled apart was probably supersonic. Our son’s face was contorted into a determined frown, and had I not been flooded with the adrenaline of what almost happened, I would have laughed at the sight of such indignance on a four-year old’s features.“He’s not being mean to me,” I said as I fought to regain my composure.“I heard him!” Domi insisted, his vibrant blue eyes darting to Killian and narrowing. “He was yelling and being loud.”“We were just having a disagreement, Domi,” I tried to explain. “Sometimes grownups raise thei

RILEYHannah stayed in the valley for another day.I thought she would return to the city soon after I woke up, but she remained at my side, vigilant as if she were my guardian angel. In a way, she was, but I had to remind her repeatedly that I wasn’t paralyzed, just exhausted from the whole ordeal.“Shut it,” she said as she drew the blinds closed early that afternoon. “Stop resisting. You need to get some sleep, missy. The doctor said you were overly exhausted and malnourished, so I know you haven’t been taking care of yourself. Close your eyes and get some rest.”I grumbled in protest but rested back and closed my eyes. There was some truth to her words, but it was hard for me to slow down when I knew Domi needed me. Yet, at the same time, I couldn’t be my best self if I wasn’t healthy. So, I got some sleep, and when I awoke, Hannah was packing her things into a bag.“Hey,” she spoke soothingly. “I have to get back to the city. Levinson & Archer is requiring me to come in right awa
