Alexander's POV

I've watched the surveillance footage from Connecticut at least twenty times in the past two hours.

Marcus Rivera arriving with gifts, playing with my son, sitting close to my wife on the garden bench, that hug at the door that lasted three seconds too long.

I tell myself I'm watching for security purposes, monitoring threats to my family, but the scotch glass in my hand and the tightness in my jaw tell a different story.

Elena smiled more in that three hour visit than she has in months with me.

Julian laughed, really laughed, the kind of pure joy I haven't heard from him in I don't know how long.

I close the laptop, pour another drink….

Elena will break soon..

she needs me more than I need her, she has no money that isn't mine, no life that isn't connected to my name…..

A few more days and she'll come crawling back properly humbled.

My office phone buzzes, Jennifer's voice comes through.

"Mr. Harrington, your three o'clock is here."

"Send them in."

I spend the next hour in a meeting about overseas expansion, numbers and projections that normally would have my full attention.

Instead I keep seeing Marcus's hand covering Elena's on that bench, keep hearing Julian call him by his first name like they're friends.

After the meeting Jennifer stops me.

"Sir, Mrs. Harrington has called sixteen times this week, should I put her through next time?"

"No," I say coldly, "let her wait, she needs to learn patience."

"Yes sir," Jennifer looks uncomfortable but doesn't argue.

Back in my office David knocks and enters without waiting for permissions.

We've been friends since business school, he's one of the few people who can get away with it.

"You look like hell Alex," David says, dropping into the chair across from my desk.

"Thanks for the observation."

"How long are you going to keep this up with Elena?"

"Keep what up?" I ask, pulling up reports on my computer.

"This whole exile thing, sending her to Connecticut, not taking her calls, it's been almost a week, maybe you should talk to your wife."

"She needs to learn," I say firmly, "she thinks she can defy me, embarrass this family, and face no consequences.

I'm teaching her how marriage works."

David shakes his head, "That's not how marriage works Alex, that's how dictatorship works.

She's your wife not your employee."

"She signed a contract agreeing to certain terms."

"A contract isn't a marriage," David stands up.

"Look….. I'm saying this as your friend, you're pushing too hard, you're going to lose her if you keep this up."

"She has nowhere to go," I say dismissively.

"She'll come back when she's ready to behave."

"Or she'll stop coming back at all." David says quietly.

"Think about it Alex, is your pride really worth losing your family?"

After he leaves I sit in silence, his words echoing uncomfortably.

I'm not losing my family, I'm maintaining order, there's a difference.

That evening I have dinner with potential investors, some tech startup looking for capital.

I drink too much wine trying to focus on their pitch, by the time I get home it's past eleven and the mansion feels emptier than usual.

I pour myself a scotch, pull up the surveillance feed on my phone, Elena is in Julian's room in Connecticut, reading him a bedtime story.

Julian is curled against her looking peaceful, content, they both look fine without me.

Something uncomfortable twists in my chest, something that feels dangerously close to loneliness….

I scroll back through my messages, those words, your son misses you, do you even care.

My thumb hovers over her contact, I could call right now, could apologize, could ask them to come home.

Pride stops me, I send a text instead.

Discipline is part of parenting, he'll be fine, children are resilient.

The message goes to delivered but not read, her phone must be off.

The silence bothers me more than her anger ever did, at least when she was calling and texting I knew she still cared, this silence feels different, final.

I wake up the next morning on my office couch, head pounding, empty scotch bottle on the floor.

My phone shows three missed calls from my mother and a text from Cassandra asking to meet for lunch.

I drag myself through a shower and two meetings before Cassandra shows up at my office unannounced.

She's dressed impeccably as always, her smile sharp.

"Brother, you look terrible," she says, settling into the chair across from my desk.

"What do you want Cassandra?"

"I saw the most interesting thing yesterday.

" she pulls out her phone, shows me photos, Marcus at the Connecticut estate, playing with Julian, sitting with Elena.

"Playing father to your son, comforting your wife, how does that make you feel?"

My jaw clenches, "It doesn't, Elena will come crawling back soon enough, she always does."

"Will she though?" Cassandra tilts her head.

"because from where I'm standing she looks very comfortable with Marcus, happier than I've ever seen her with you."

"What's your point?" I ask coldly.

"My point is for you to throw her out ," Cassandra stands up, smooths her skirt.

"You're so busy trying to prove you're in control that you don't see she is cheating on you , and once she's gone, she will steal all your properties and run away

"She's my wife, she's not going anywhere."

"Keep telling yourself that," Cassandra heads for the door, "but I've seen that look in her eyes. Be warned Alexander

After she leaves I sit in silence, her words digging under my skin like splinters, I pull up the surveillance footage again of what had happened between them all

For the first time something that feels like fear creeps into my chest, what if Cassandra's right?

Well…..I don't care my wife can't leave me she love me more than. Anything in this world

Alexander's POVI sit in my darkened office at two AM, the city lights below blurring into streaks because I've had too much scotch. My phone sits on the desk mocking me with its silence.Seventeen calls to Elena tonight, seventeen times sent straight to voicemail or just ringing endlessly. I've texted her six times and every message shows as read but no response comes, just this deafening silence that makes me want to throw the phone through the window.I pulled up the security app on my laptop, the one I had installed on Elena's phone when we first moved to Connecticut, told her it was for safety purposes, for tracking in case of emergency. She never questioned it, never thought to turn it off.The location history shows she left the Plaza at four PM, drove north into Connecticut but not to our estate, somewhere else.I zoom in on the map and my jaw clenches, she was at an address I don't recognize for over four hours.I run the address through the company database, my fingers typi

Elena's POVThree days at the Plaza and Marcus has visited every single day, always bringing something for Julian.Today he calls with a different kind of invitation."Come to my place for dinner," his voice is warm through the phone. "I want to cook for you and Julian, real food, not hotel room service.""Marcus, I don't know," I say, watching Julian play with his dinosaurs."Is that appropriate?""It's just dinner, Elena," he says gently, "friends having dinner, nothing more, unless you want it to be more."My heart does this flip at those last words. "What does that mean?""It means I care about you," Marcus says, "and I think you care about me too, but we can talk about that later, right now I just want to feed you both a home cooked meal."I know I should say no but I'm so tired of living by Alexander's rules. "Okay, what time?"Marcus's house is forty minutes outside the city, smaller than any of Alexander's properties but so much warmer. There are actual photos on the walls,

Marcus's POVI sit in my apartment nursing a scotch, still thinking about the look on Elena's face when she read that inscription. The way her eyes got all soft and vulnerable, exactly what I need.My phone rings and Cassandra's name flashes across the screen… I answer on the second ring."Tell me you're making progress," her voice is sharp, impatient."I'm exactly where I need to be," I say, swirling the scotch in my glass. She's falling for it, falling for me, it's almost too easy."Don't get cocky," Cassandra snaps, "Alexander is already suspicious.I saw him at the office today and he looked like hell, you need to move faster."Rushing will blow everything," I lean back against the couch."Elena needs to feel like this is real… like I'm her savior, that takes time and careful planning.""We don't have time," Cassandra's voice goes cold."Alexander fired his investigator, he's watching surveillance footage obsessively, he knows something is happening.""Good," I smile, "let him w

Elena's POVMarcus arrives exactly one hour later.I hear the knock and my stomach does this nervous flip, Julian races to the door before I can stop him."Marcus," Julian squeals, wrapping his little arms around Marcus's legs."Hey buddy," Marcus crouches down, ruffling Julian's hair. "I brought dinner, and I might have something else for you too."He pulls out a toy dinosaur from behind his back, not just any dinosaur but a T-Rex with movable joints and realistic details. Julian's eyes go so wide I think they might fall out of his head."Wow," Julian breathes, taking it carefully like it's made of glass, "thank you Marcus, this is the best.""You remembered he likes dinosaurs," I say, surprised because I only mentioned it once during lunch last week.Marcus looks up at me, still kneeling on the floor."I pay attention, Elena."Something warm spreads through my chest at those words, when was the last time Alexander paid attention to anything I said…When was the last time he rememb

Are you okay?"My hand trembles holding the phone, I can barely get the words out."He sent his lawyer, Marcus, an email from Thomas Grayson saying I need to collect my things tomorrow, that temporary accommodations have been arranged at the Plaza Hotel.""Jesus," Marcus breathes out. "Elena, I'm so sorry.""He didn't even call me himself," my voice cracks and I hate how weak I sound, "just had his lawyer handle it like I'm some business transaction he's closing."Marcus is quiet for a moment….then his voice comes back softer. "Listen, I know the Plaza is nice but that's not a home for Julian, if you need anything at all I'm here…..you don't have to do this alone.""Thank you," I whisper, tears streaming down my face now.But I need to handle this myself, I need to prove I can stand on my own, that I'm not just Alexander's wi

Elena's pov I stare at my phone, my thumb hovering over Alexander's name, and something inside me just breaks.…. not the dramatic kind of breaking where you cry and scream, but the quiet kind where you realize you've been begging someone to love you and they just won't.I lock my phone and set it face down on the kitchen counter, two weeks of calling him first, texting him first, apologizing for things I'm not even sure I did wrong.….and for what, for silence, for one-word responses, for the cold shoulder that feels more like a knife in my back."Mama, look," Julian says, rolling his toy truck across the marble floor, and I force a smile because he doesn't deserve to see me falling apart."That's wonderful, baby," I say, kneeling down to watch him play, and maybe this is enough, maybe Julian and I can just be enough for each other. My phone buzzes and I expect Alexander's name, but it's Marcus, he's been calling every other day since we got here, just checking in, making sure I'm o
