The hospital smelled of antiseptic and worry. I ran through the double doors, my shoes hitting against the cold tiles, heart thudding wildly in my chest.

“Miss Adams?” a nurse called, waving me over.

“Yes….I'm here. What's going on?” I asked, almost out of breath.

“It’s your stepmom,” she said gently. “Her condition worsened. The doctor wants to speak with you.”

I didn’t realize I’d been holding my breath until I was ushered into a quiet consultation room, where Dr. Spence stood waiting. His expression told me everything.

“She’s stable for now,” he began, “but Jessica, the time is running out.”

I sat down hard.

“I’ve contacted every possible agency,” he said softly. “But the procedure... it’s expensive. You’ll need to make arrangements soon, or we may have to consider transferring her to public care.”
