NIKO'S POV

My name is Nikolai, but most people prefer to call me Niko. I'm eighteen years old, and I'm from Russia.

My mum is a businesswoman. She's successful, hardworking, and almost never at home. Sometimes I wondered if she even noticed how much time she spent away from us.

My dad is Spanish, he met my mum when he moved to Russia years ago. They fell in love, got married, and eventually had me.

For a while, everything seemed perfect but as I grew older, things between them started changing.

After that day, something between Mateo and me felt different. We weren't officially anything, we hadn't talked about feelings but we were closer. We started spending more time together after school. Sometimes we'd study at my house, other times I'd go over to Mateo's house and we'd study in his room.Mateo took studying seriously. His room was quiet, with books arranged across his desk and notes scattered everywhere. Sometimes he'd sit on his bed with his legs crossed, reading through his textbooks while I sat nearby.I'd occasionally catch myself staring at him instead of studying. “You're not reading,” he'd say without looking up.“I am.”“You've been staring at the same page for ten minutes.” I laughed “Maybe the page is interesting.”He finally looked at me “You're impossible.” I smiled “You like me anyway.” The words slipped out before I could stop them, Mateo froze so did I.I quickly laughed it off “I mean, as a friend.” He smiled awkwardly and returned to his book but my hear

I woke up thinking about what happened the night before. I stared at my ceiling for a while then covered my face with my pillow. Why did I keep staring at his window? It was embarrassing not because I'd seen Mateo without his shirt. It was because I'd been watching his window in the first place.I got dressed quickly and went downstairs, Dad was already preparing breakfast. “You're quiet today.”“I'm tired.” He looked at me suspiciously but didn't push. After breakfast, I grabbed my backpack and stepped outside. Mateo was already leaving his house. The moment he saw me, he stopped, I smiled “Morning.”“Morning.” He looked away almost immediately, I had to bite back a laugh. He was definitely still embarrassed.“Sleep well?” He nodded. “Yeah.”“Good.”We started walking toward the bus stop neither of us mentioned last night. I decided not to tease him at least not yet. When we reached school, Alex and Nia were already waiting. Alex looked between Mateo and me. “You two came together aga

The next few days went by quickly. School was beginning to feel less like a new place and more like somewhere I belonged. I had Alex and Nia.I was getting along with the other students and somehow, I had started talking to Mateo more. Not a lot but enough.Sometimes we'd walk to the bus stop together, sometimes we'd talk during lunch. Other times, we'd simply pass each other in the hallway and exchange a smile.I didn't know why those little moments mattered to me but they did then Friday came. We had a basketball game after school. I was excited because I'd missed playing in front of people. The court was already getting crowded when I arrived. Alex was warming up while Nia was helping organize some of the players. “You ready?” Alex asked.“Always.” He laughed. “Don't get too confident.”“Never.” I glanced toward the entrance, students were beginning to fill the seats then I saw Mateo. He walked in beside Daniel. For a second, I just stared. He actually came, I smiled without realiz

The first week at my new school went faster than I expected. I thought starting over would feel strange, but somehow, I settled in quickly.Alex made sure of that. He introduced me to almost everyone he knew, including Nia, who played basketball and seemed to have an opinion about everything. She challenged me to a game during lunch on my second day. “You sure you can keep up?” she asked. I laughed. “Try me.”That was how I ended up spending most of my breaks with Alex and Nia. I also joined the basketball team, It felt good to be back on the court. For a while, I forgot about everything that had happened in Russia. No rumors, questions or hospital. Just the sound of sneakers against the floor and the ball bouncing beneath my hands but there was one person I kept noticing. Mateo, I didn't understand why. He wasn't loud or try to get everyone's attention. Most of the time, he stayed beside Daniel and kept to himself yet somehow, my eyes always found him.One afternoon, I walked past

The first thing I noticed about Spain was how different the mornings felt. The sunlight came through my bedroom window much earlier than I was used to, spreading across the unfamiliar walls of my new room.I lay there for a while, staring at the ceiling. New room, new country, new school and new life. I sighed and reached for my phone. No new messages.I wasn't surprised. I had left almost everyone behind in Russia.Dad had already gone downstairs. I could hear him moving things around, probably trying to organize the kitchen for the hundredth time. I dragged myself out of bed and opened the curtains.Across the street was the same house I'd noticed yesterday and then I saw him. The blonde boy, he was standing near his window, looking outside.I froze. He looked different in the morning, his hair was messy, and he seemed half asleep. For a second, I wondered if he had noticed me then he suddenly turned. Our eyes met. He immediately disappeared from the window. I laughed quietly. “Inte

Dad complained that Mum was hardly ever home while Mum would say she was working for our future.Dad would argue that a family needed more than money. Their arguments became normal in our house.Dad owned a café, but he mostly managed things from home. He was also the one who cleaned the house, cooked sometimes, and took care of most of the things Mum rarely had time for.It frustrated him. Sometimes their arguments became so loud that I'd put my headphones on just to escape them. I learned ear
