What is this niceness?

Chapter 3

"Mr. Martin, you might have to pardon her. Please," the doctor walked into the ward with his hands folded behind him. Martin turned immediately.

"For what reason? I do not want my mother to get uncomfortable, most especially by this woman!" He pointed to Caitlyn, his eyes opened widely.

The doctor sighed and briefly adjusted his glasses. He hesitated a bit before he spoke. "This woman just lost her mother to a horrible accident. She went into shock. We're worried about how the state of her mental health would be once she wakes up, " the doctor stared at Caitlyn pitifully.

"How is that any of my concern? Do you think she is more important than my mother?"

Herald shifted closer to his brother and whispered into his ear, "show some pity, brother." Martin turned to him and gave him a cold glare. Herald fearfully moved away.

"She must leave this room, or you move my mother to a better one before I return," he declared and stormed out.

Herald sighed and turned to the doctor. "Move the lady to a better room. Create space, please. I'll cover her bills."

"Thank you, Mr. King. I will find one for her," the doctor thanked him. Herald smiled and nodded.

"I'll take my leave now," the doctor announced.

"Okay, doc. I'll see you before I leave," Herald told him. The doctor smiled and took one quick look at madam Scarlett before walking out.

Herald exhaled heavily as the doctor left. 'What can I do with you, Martin?'

Martin was on his way out of the hospital when his phone began vibrating in his breast pocket.

He took it out and wanted to answer it when he suddenly paused in front of the receptionist's table. He had heard her mention Caitlyn's name.

"I feel so much pity for her. Becoming an orphan at such a young age," the receptionist sighed.

"I knew her mother. She was a good woman, just like her daughter. Easygoing, too. Death can be so cruel," the nurse added. The receptionist nodded in agreement.

Martin pursed his lips and continued his walk out. He couldn't get the thought of Caitlyn being an orphan out of his head throughout his ride home. He wondered if he had been too harsh on her.

"Mr. King, we have been awaiting your arrival," the two naked women kneeling by the side of his door chorused as he opened the door to his bedroom. Martin halted and eyed them.

"Leave," he ordered and walked past them. The ladies looked at each other with raised brows.

They were confused at his sudden change of heart. However, they wouldn't dare to go against him, so they slowly stood on their feet.

They each picked their dresses from the bed, covered their nakedness, and turned to walk out of the room, not uttering a word.

Martin sighed and fell on his back as the ladies shut the door behind them. He closed his eyes to think.

He sat up after some time and picked up his phone from the top of the drawer where it lay, unlocked it, and dialed a number. He placed the phone near his ear as it rang.

.

"Mr. King," the doctor's cheerful voice sounded over the phone. "I want you to move the lady to a better ward and take care of her. I'll cover her bills," Martin went straight to the point.

"Your brother has done that already, Mr. King," he informed him. Martin nodded.

"Okay," he simply said and hung up.

...

"You're awake now, miss Hugh," the doctor smiled, standing very close to a frail-looking Caitlyn.

She had just woken up after two days and couldn't recall certain things yet. She looked to her side slowly and caught the face of her boss smiling at her.

"You're here, sir," her voice came out as a whisper. He smiled warmly. She squinted her eyes at the man standing beside her boss. "Mr. Handsome?"

"Mr. Handsome?" Herald repeated. "She calls me that," Martin walked into the room. The doctor and lawyer quickly gave a small bow as he entered.

"He's my brother," Martin told her after seeing the confusing look she held. Caitlyn smiled and nodded slightly. She suddenly remembered the reason she was at the hospital.

She groaned in pain as she tried to sit up. The doctor quickly rushed to assist her. "My mother. Where's my mother? Was it all a dream?" She asked, looking at the faces of the men in the room one after the other.

The doctor sighed. "It wasn't a dream, Miss Hugh. Your mother has passed away."

A tear fell from her left eye and opened the way for more. The doctor patted her back in comfort as she cried.

"Can I see her?" Caitlyn asked in between sobs. "Of course, you can. Are you ready yet?"

She nodded positively in response to the doctor's question. "I'll help her," Martin stopped the doctor as he tried to hold Caitlyn's arm and held her instead.

Herald held a suspicious look as he stared at his brother. 'What's with this sudden and rare niceness?'

Caitlyn wiped her tears with the back of her palm as Martin and the other men slowly led her to the morgue.

A fresh round of tears began streaming down her face as she stared at her mother's lifeless body. It was almost unrecognizable.

" why did you leave me, mother? Why?" She cried, clutching tightly to her mother's body.

The men stared at her in pity. Martin suddenly felt the need to be by her side. He couldn't understand the reason he was hurt by her sadness. He made to move to her when Herald stopped him. "Leave her be, brother."

Martin ignored his brother and went to Caitlyn. He placed his hand on her shoulder. She turned to him and immediately wrapped her hands around his neck, pressing her body into his as she sobbed loudly.

Martin hugged her back and turned to give his brother a 'you were saying?' look. Herald sighed.

They returned to her ward after some time. Just as Martin was helping Caitlyn back into her bed, the door opened and a woman walked in.
