Se connecterI came back to school after a long vacation, entered my room, unpacked my bags, and cleaned everywhere up. Then I went to Mike's room to catch up and play games. The rest of the guys weren't back yet, those dudes didn't like school at all. Apart from during exams, I hardly ever saw them. They were just some rich young guys going around the city spending their dads' money.
We played COD. Mike lost, as usual. After a successful day of trolling him, I headed to the mall to stock up my room with supplies.
While I was shopping, I met Ann. After over five months of not seeing each other, she looked plumper and rosier.
Ann: "Hi."
Me: "Hi."
Ann: "Congratulations. Welcome to third year."
Me: "Thanks. Same to you."
Ann: "Congrats again. The whole school is talking about you and Mike."
Me: "What for?"
Ann: "You both were the only ones with distinction in your department. Don't tell me you don't know they've been recommending you on the school platform?"
Me: "Oh, that. Thanks."
Ann: "Wait, you're not even on the school forum?"
Me: "Yeah, I'm not. Why?"
Ann: "Then how do you get messages concerning the school?"
Me: "Well, the school is responsible enough to send all vital information like semester start dates, tuition, and all that to our individual emails."
Ann: "Oh, I see."
Ann: "Actually, Mike and I are not da—"
I cut her off.
Me: "I don't have any business with what you and Mike are, and neither do I care. But you repeatedly bringing up something that mistakenly happened is making me mentally deranged, Ann. I can't fuck the girl my friend is fucking."
She went quiet for a while, looking at me with a sad expression. I turned to leave, feeling a little guilty. Maybe I'd shouted at her too much.
Ann: "It was all an act."
Wait, what? What was an act? I paused.
Ann: "Mike and I were never an item. He never liked me. We're just acquaintances. We met when my toxic ex beat me and kicked me out of his car in the middle of the road. Mike helped me, brought me to his place, and then we started acting because we knew my ex would definitely come back. I slept with him partly because we both needed to… orgasm, and partly because we wanted to make it a foolproof act."
I turned to look at her.
Ann: "All the gifts, the flowers. They were pre planned."
Me: "Why are you telling me all this?"
Ann: "I don't want you to carry guilt for a long time. No matter how you try to act cool about it, some part of you still feels you betrayed Mike. But have you asked yourself , if Mike wanted a serious relationship, what are the other seven girls doing in his life? Does he even look like someone who wants something serious?"
Me: "Wait, you know? I mean, about the other girls?"
Ann: "Yeah… it wasn't so hard to find out."
Me: "Okay, then. Thanks for clearing the air. Have a nice day."
I turned and left. I don't even know why I did that, but I did what I did. I continued my shopping, paid, and left.
When I got home, I made some sandwiches and milk for dinner in my room. Well, I call it a room, but it's a fully furnished condo, my favorite place.
Later, I went to a party close to my place, had a couple of drinks, and met a few ladies. I still hadn't seen my hijab girl since she left early at the wedding. Maybe I was never going to see her again.
After the party, I went to the school field to play basketball. Mike wasn't there, so I played with the other guys. My team lost the match. I wished Mike were there to gloat over me.
I left around 8 p.m., went back to take a shower, and got ready for bed.
Just after my shower, as I was about to climb into bed, I heard a heated conversation outside my door. I rushed out to check. The first thing I saw was a guy raising his hand to slap a girl.
I rushed in, kicked the guy, and beat the hell out of him. The lady just stood there, looking dazed. When I was done with him, I turned around and saw that the girl was Ann.
Wait, what? Ann? So she wasn't lying, then.
I'm not playing any act with her, though. so I thought.
The roommate continued.Roommate: “I was so angry. I’m a woman too, and putting myself in her shoes… I wouldn’t be happy at all. I might even do something stupid. Since she confided in me and she’s my friend, I decided to help her get justice. So I took matters into my own hands and sent the story to a blogger I knew. She posted it, and I paid her. That’s how you started trending.”Ann: “Why didn’t you call me to verify? We were roommates for two years. If I hadn’t moved out, we’d still be sharing a room. We never had any major misunderstandings.”Roommate: “Ann, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight. I should have checked with you at least we weren’t fighting.”Ann: “But you didn’t! Do you have any idea how deep this cut? Do you know the emotional damage you caused? The impact on my relationship? Everywhere I went, people pointed fingers. They mocked me. Girls laughed at me. I felt like a clown. There was even a day I didn’t go to school because I couldn’t face them. And now you h
We bathed together and nothing too deep happened then Ann went to cook. She made Chinese dishes: dumplings and hot pot. When she brought them to me in the room, I cleared the plate and asked for more. I rarely let her cook, and when she did, I treasured it besides, the food was delicious. I don’t even know who taught her Chinese cuisine. When we finished, she took the plates to the kitchen, washed them, did our laundry, and cleaned the house. She was in such a good mood she even sang while she worked. After the chores, she came back to the room, and I gave her a full-body massage. During the massage, she fell asleep. The next morning, we woke up, did our routine, and went to school. As we were about to enter class, we saw Ann’s roommate standing by the door, clearly waiting for someone. She approached us immediately.Roommate: “Hey, Ann. Hey.” She waved at me.Ann: “Hey.” She smiled.Roommate: “Can I have two minutes of your time? I promise I won’t be long.”Ann: “Yeah, that’s fine.
The next day, we went to school as usual. Lectures went smoothly; the scandal was completely out of our minds. We had tests and assignments due that same day, so we hit the library to finish up. After submitting the soft copies to our lecturer’s email, we headed to the canteen for lunch. In the school canteen, people kept passing by, smiling, and saying hello. My other buddies were on campus that day because of the tests and assignments. Coincidentally, they were seated just a table away.Mike: “Guys, look over there. Isn’t that Nath?”I was placing an order with Ann when I heard my name. I turned and saw them.Me: “Hey, bro.” I excused myself from Ann. “What’s up, guys? Been a minute. How have you been?”Pat: “We’re cool, man. Just got back to school yesterday.”Dave: “We heard there was a test, so we had to pull up.”Alex: “And some crazy-ass assignment.”Mike: “Man, I honestly can’t wait to get this school thing over with.”Me: “Not that I’m not tired too, but we have to pull throu
I was ecstatic. At least tonight I could sleep beside Ann again have her back in my arms. I hurried to the kitchen and prepared some grilled turkey cream pasta and apple cider, showered quickly, then went to our master bedroom. Ann was still asleep. I gently woke her.Me: “Ann… Ann, wake up.”Ann: (Grumbling) “Mmmhhmm…”Me: “Wake up. It’s time to eat.”Ann: “Why are you talking to me? And why are you here?”Me: “Eat first, then we’ll talk.”Ann: “Leave me alone.”Me: “Baby, please. Princess, you need to wake up.”Ann: “What’s going on? If I’m hungry, I’ll eat by myself. I’m an adult.”Me: “Baby, I know you’re upset with me, but if you get up and eat, I promise I’ll tell you something very important.”Ann: (Sits up) “What’s so important that you can’t tell me now?”Me: “You’ll need energy to digest what I’m about to say.”Ann: “Fine. God help you if it’s bad news.” She eyed me suspiciously. She took the food and began to eat. My eyes stayed on her the whole time. God, I missed her face
Me: “Get me the latest update on the sick mother’s medical report. Set a trap for the brother, make sure he borrows a large sum from a loan shark. Block the news from the blogger’s mother so she doesn’t go into shock.”PA: “Yes, sir. I’ll take care of it right away.”Me: “But Nancy isn’t even in town anymore. She’s schooling in F City. The last time I saw her was in junior secondary. Why would she do all this?”PA: (Smiling) “Sir, it’s obvious. It’s because she likes you.”Me: “Nancy likes me?”PA: “Yes, sir. From the story they concocted, it says you dumped your ex-girlfriend. Your ex definitely isn’t at your school, or she would’ve spoken up meaning Nancy is your alleged ex.”Me: “How come I never knew?”PA: “Apart from when you met Ann, you’ve always been a nonchalant person. You probably wouldn’t have cared even if she told you. I think she was waiting for you to take the initiative and ask her out.”Me: “But I don’t even like her.
