Se connecterI couldn't let her go back to wherever she came from, it felt too dangerous. So I brought her into my room, gave her a set of my clothes, and told her to freshen up. While she showered, I made her some toast and tea.
She ate, and we sat in the living room in silence. I didn't know how to start a conversation, and I knew she needed quiet to clear her head. After a while, I stood up.
"If you're ready to sleep, come into the room," I said.
It was past 2 a.m., and she was still sobbing softly maybe still hurting. I went back to the living room and gave her a hug. It was what she needed. A few minutes later, she calmed down. I carried her to the room and patted her to sleep. The girl had cried until her eyes looked like walnuts.
I woke up first the next day. She was still deep asleep, so I made breakfast: fried noodles and chocolate tea. She must have woken to the aroma and followed it to the kitchen.
Ann: "Good morning." She said dryly.
Me: "Morning. Hope you slept well?"
Ann: "Yeah, I did. Sorry for disturbing you last night… and thank you for helping me. He might've beaten me up again."
Me: "So it was him? Your toxic ex?"
Ann: "Yeah."
Me: "What does he want?"
Ann: "I guess he came back because he heard Mike and I aren't together anymore."
Me: "You and Mike aren't together?"
Ann: "No… I couldn't keep acting forever. Besides, he has a life. It's better I figure things out on my own. At least he helped me a lot."
Me: "And figuring things out means letting your ex beat you up?"
Ann: "No, he caught me off guard. That guy is a lunatic. I'm still thinking of the best way forward."
Me: "Report him to the police."
Ann: "Police! Police, police! How come I never thought about it?"
Me: "Maybe because you're scatterbrained."
I was serious, but she took it as a joke and laughed. I was amused, so I laughed too. Breakfast was ready, so we moved to the dining table.
Ann: "You're a great cook."
Me: "Yeah, I know."
Ann: "Did you go to culinary school?"
Me: "Well, my mom is a culinary school," I laughed. "I mean, she's the best cook in the world. I started learning from her when I was five. I was an only child then, and my dad was always busy. Even though she was busy too, she made time for me. Cooking was how we bonded."
Ann: "Wow… your mom is amazing."
Me: "Yeah, she is."
Ann: "I wish my mom could cook too." Her expression fell.
Me: "Well… your mom is definitely perfect at something else. I'm sure she's a sweet mom too."
Ann: "Yeah, she's perfect at working 24/7 with my dad at his company. Sometimes they sleep over there and leave me alone at home with the housekeeper."
I kept quiet for a while, unsure how to respond. She went quiet too. Our breakfast ended in silence.
She gathered the plates and moved to wash them.
Me: "Don't worry, I'll do it."
Ann: "No, you already made the meal. Thank you for the food."
Me: "It's nothing."
Ann: "I'm planning on going back to my room after this."
Me: "You think your ex isn't following you?"
Ann: "But I can't keep staying at your place."
Me: "Yeah, you can't. But you can stay here as long as your toxic ex is still roaming the streets freely."
Ann: "Why are you being nice to me?"
Me: "Bitch, I'm not. I'm just being human. I'd do it for any other girl. Don't feel special."
The roommate continued.Roommate: “I was so angry. I’m a woman too, and putting myself in her shoes… I wouldn’t be happy at all. I might even do something stupid. Since she confided in me and she’s my friend, I decided to help her get justice. So I took matters into my own hands and sent the story to a blogger I knew. She posted it, and I paid her. That’s how you started trending.”Ann: “Why didn’t you call me to verify? We were roommates for two years. If I hadn’t moved out, we’d still be sharing a room. We never had any major misunderstandings.”Roommate: “Ann, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight. I should have checked with you at least we weren’t fighting.”Ann: “But you didn’t! Do you have any idea how deep this cut? Do you know the emotional damage you caused? The impact on my relationship? Everywhere I went, people pointed fingers. They mocked me. Girls laughed at me. I felt like a clown. There was even a day I didn’t go to school because I couldn’t face them. And now you h
We bathed together and nothing too deep happened then Ann went to cook. She made Chinese dishes: dumplings and hot pot. When she brought them to me in the room, I cleared the plate and asked for more. I rarely let her cook, and when she did, I treasured it besides, the food was delicious. I don’t even know who taught her Chinese cuisine. When we finished, she took the plates to the kitchen, washed them, did our laundry, and cleaned the house. She was in such a good mood she even sang while she worked. After the chores, she came back to the room, and I gave her a full-body massage. During the massage, she fell asleep. The next morning, we woke up, did our routine, and went to school. As we were about to enter class, we saw Ann’s roommate standing by the door, clearly waiting for someone. She approached us immediately.Roommate: “Hey, Ann. Hey.” She waved at me.Ann: “Hey.” She smiled.Roommate: “Can I have two minutes of your time? I promise I won’t be long.”Ann: “Yeah, that’s fine.
The next day, we went to school as usual. Lectures went smoothly; the scandal was completely out of our minds. We had tests and assignments due that same day, so we hit the library to finish up. After submitting the soft copies to our lecturer’s email, we headed to the canteen for lunch. In the school canteen, people kept passing by, smiling, and saying hello. My other buddies were on campus that day because of the tests and assignments. Coincidentally, they were seated just a table away.Mike: “Guys, look over there. Isn’t that Nath?”I was placing an order with Ann when I heard my name. I turned and saw them.Me: “Hey, bro.” I excused myself from Ann. “What’s up, guys? Been a minute. How have you been?”Pat: “We’re cool, man. Just got back to school yesterday.”Dave: “We heard there was a test, so we had to pull up.”Alex: “And some crazy-ass assignment.”Mike: “Man, I honestly can’t wait to get this school thing over with.”Me: “Not that I’m not tired too, but we have to pull throu
I was ecstatic. At least tonight I could sleep beside Ann again have her back in my arms. I hurried to the kitchen and prepared some grilled turkey cream pasta and apple cider, showered quickly, then went to our master bedroom. Ann was still asleep. I gently woke her.Me: “Ann… Ann, wake up.”Ann: (Grumbling) “Mmmhhmm…”Me: “Wake up. It’s time to eat.”Ann: “Why are you talking to me? And why are you here?”Me: “Eat first, then we’ll talk.”Ann: “Leave me alone.”Me: “Baby, please. Princess, you need to wake up.”Ann: “What’s going on? If I’m hungry, I’ll eat by myself. I’m an adult.”Me: “Baby, I know you’re upset with me, but if you get up and eat, I promise I’ll tell you something very important.”Ann: (Sits up) “What’s so important that you can’t tell me now?”Me: “You’ll need energy to digest what I’m about to say.”Ann: “Fine. God help you if it’s bad news.” She eyed me suspiciously. She took the food and began to eat. My eyes stayed on her the whole time. God, I missed her face

From the story they concocted, it says you dumped your ex-girlfriend. Your ex definitely isn’t at your school, or she would’ve spoken up meaning Nancy is your alleged ex.”Me: “How come I never knew?”PA: “Apart from when you met Ann, you’ve always been a nonchalant person. You probably wouldn’t have cared even if she told you. I think she was waiting for you to take the initiative and ask her out.”Me: “But I don’t even like her.
