Cole closed his eyes and pinched the skin between his nose in annoyance. Mara, the eldest daughter of the shadow river pack was seated next to him at the table, and shamelessly kept pressing herself against him while she chatted about anything and everything that came into her head without pause. How was she still talking, did she not need to breathe? He asked himself, she was beautiful, no doubt. Her skin was a deep brown and her long flowing dark hair reached to her dainty waist, her brown eyes were large in her delicate features. Cole chided himself, what does beauty matter? I’ve seen beautiful women before, and many beautiful women had offered themselves to me. I've even taken more than a few of them up on those offers, only to find after the pleasures of the night were over I felt nothing for them. How can I help it if in my entire life no woman has ever managed to hold my interest for more than a few hours, or made me feel anything other than passing lust? It wasn’t that I was made of ice as others were inclined to believe, I do know love, I loved my family and my pack, there is nothing I wouldn't do for them - I just hadn’t been moved by a woman.. Ever.
Tuning back into the conversation at the table just in time to hear the little twit rambling on about her shoes, I rolled my eyes, like I would ever care about what was on her feet? I just wanted to get through this political display so I could move on and get away from this place, there was no way I could take this girl or any of her younger sisters to be my luna, they were all just as spoiled, shallow and vapid as Mara, and i despise that in any woman.
Alpha Eric was not yet at the dining table and it only served to irritate me further that this alpha that was so far beneath me in status would leave me waiting. “Excuse me, i think i shall take a walk outside while i … wait” I told those around the table, allowing my pause to make my annoyance at Eric’s lack of respect plain. “I’ll join you!” Mara said, popping up from her chair, no doubt thinking she could pull me into some corner of the forest to be alone. “No.” I said with a little more disdain than I’d intended “I'd much prefer to be alone for now.” Mara sat back down with a pout on her face. A pout! To put this woman forward as a possible bride for me was shameful. The only woman I could ever consider for my Luna would be strong and intelligent, a woman capable of leading the pack in my absence, to battle if need be. Shaking my head slightly at the silly creature, I stepped away from the table. Immediately two of my warriors came to my side. “Stay.” With one look at the expression on my face both men immediately stepped back and allowed me to pass.
Stepping into the hallway I began making my way towards the outdoor gardens I had only managed to get a glimpse of earlier, although I was unfamiliar in this place as I rounded a corner I knew I was heading in the right direction because I could smell the blooming night flowers. I began following the beautiful and captivating scent, and after another couple of turns I could see the glass doorway to the gardens at the end of the hall, lit like a beacon in the dark by the moonlight streaming through. It was there in the dark that the realization hit me - the doors were closed. The scent I'd followed was not coming from the gardens. Turning to look further into the darkness it hit me like a blast furnace, waking all my senses and bringing my breathing to a halt. I found all of my attention was focused on a girl lurking there in the dark, the owner of the scent that was currently playing havoc with my body. I needed to snap out of it.
“What are you doing, hiding here in the dark?” I demanded, grabbing her arm pulling her into the light of the doorway. “Trying to avoid being noticed” she hissed, while struggling to free herself from my grip. It was no use, I could no more let her go than I could understand the tingling sparks licking at my skin where I touched her. Hypnotized by her presence, all I could do is stare at the beautiful creature in front of me.
When He didn’t respond to me immediately I finally turned my face up to look at the man ruining my escape attempt, and I found myself looking at the most gorgeous man I'd ever seen. His bright almost silver blue eyes bored into me, his neatly cut and combed dark brown hair was loose on top and framed his strong features, he looked like nothing less than a god standing there, his large muscular body framed lit from behind by the moonlight falling around him, he took my breath away. For the first time in my life I felt desire curl deep in my belly. With my heart pounding so hard I was certain half the house would hear I felt my wolf becoming restless while I looked into the strangers eyes “Who… Who are you?”
Cole was speechless, completely held captive the moment this girl's bright green eyes hit him. His wolf came forward in his mind “MINE” his wolf pushed into his thoughts. Mine? What was that about? Who was this girl? She was flawlessly beautiful in a way he’d never seen before, her beautiful tanned skin and dark hair the perfect backdrop for her vivid eyes, her full lips a delicious looking compliment to her otherwise delicate features, his eyes dropped to take in the rest of her, she was tall for a girl, but that only meant she was only tall enough to be at his chest, yet her height did nothing to make her less feminine, her beautiful curves evident underneath ill fitting clothes, yet something in the way she held herself told him she wasn’t all softness, and that plenty of muscle lay just beneath the surface. He took half a step back from her trying to regain his composure “MINE” his wolf pushed again.
I released my hold on her arm but was unable to speak, whoever she was, one thing was undeniable, those beautiful green eyes staring back at me had made me feel more in an instant than any woman had made me feel in my entire lifetime, and I had to know more.
A sudden crash from a nearby hallway broke the spell between them. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE’S GONE?” a man yelled. The woman next to Cole began to shake in fear. So this is why she was hiding. “Go” he whispered “I’ll cover for you”. Looking up into my face she scanned my features, looking for any sign I might betray her, when she found none, she still hesitated, “Go” I said again, this time using the full force of my alpha tone. Flinching back from me and unable to deny my command, she sprinted to the door, and was out of it in a blink. Following her out the door, I stood casually on the patio leading out to the garden, watching as she skillfully made her way to the tree line by dodging through the shadows. If I hadn’t been so keenly aware of her presence I might not have been able to follow her movements. “Impressive” I thought as I coolly turned to greet the guards coming through the door behind me.
“Did you see a woman come this way Alpha? Our Alpha’s ward has gone missing.” one of them asked. So that’s who she was, his ward. He remembered hearing something about this alpha keeping a young girl under his care, but what kind of man needs to send guards to find his ward? What has he done to her that would make her feel the need to run away? The thought of anyone mistreating her made his blood boil. “No, I've been alone since I left the dinner your Alpha rudely left me waiting at.” Cole responded, allowing his rage over her mistreatment and irritation at their interruption to reach his eyes, the displeasure on his face a clear warning to them that he should not be pressed further. “Apologies sir, we will continue our search.. elsewhere.” stammered what he assumed must be the officer among them, while turning and motioning his men to follow him as he proceeded back inside.
Charlotte had been running all night, after escaping the pack house she just kept moving, as silently as possible through the woods towards the border of their territory, she drew upon as much of her wolf as she could without shifting. She needed all the energy she could save for once she was off pack lands. “Come on lottie, it can’t be much farther now” she coached herself. It was shortly after dawn when she came to the border, moving through it felt like a small electrical buzz clinging to her skin as she passed, snapping like spider’s webs around her. The border was put up long ago by a witch. It had two purposes, when humans came near it would play on their fears and make them feel afraid so they would not trespass and discover them accidentally and the other purpose was to alert the alpha of any unauthorized coming or going on his lands. My Uncle now knew someone had crossed the border in this spot, and th
It had been weeks since seeing the girl and still my body and mind were in complete chaos. To say finding a mate was uncommon would be an understatement, Unlike the old days very very few wolves ever found their mate anymore, but there was no doubt in my mind now, those green eyes of hers that were haunting all my dreams could only belong to one person - my mate. Now that I'd found her she was all that I could think about. Not knowing where she was or if she was potentially in danger? Had my wolf screaming in my head to be let loose, we were both desperate to find her. Lashing out my fist connected with a tree with a sickening thud. I had wasted no time in returning home after concluding things with the sun shadow pack’s disgusting excuse for an alpha and put every available resource I had into searching for her. “I want her FOUND” I snarled in frustration “there MUST be a way”.
Charlotte wrapped herself tighter in her blanket, glad she’d bought thing even if it was a pain to pack around everywhere. After 16 days of travel, she found herself this morning sitting on a beach somewhere in the northwest watching the reflection in the waves as the sun came up behind her.. “Ok lottie, what's the plan now” she wondered aloud. The money I'd saved had run out days ago, luckily I'd managed to hitchhike this far and beg a few meals from strangers along the way. When I arrived in this cute coastal town yesterday evening I fell in love with it immediately. It had an old world charm about it, the buildings were old but well cared for, all painted in shades of white, with each building accented brightly in a different color, the whole town seemed to be cascading in a multitude of flowers, overflowing from balconies and windows, winding up lamp posts along the street. After wandering the town an
Elle sat patiently while I devoured the food she’d given me, smiling as she brought me a second glass of lemonade. I'd drained the first before I'd even sat down at the table. “Been a long time since someone has enjoyed something I cooked so much, most i get out of Sam these days is a grunt or two”. “Who’s Sam?” i asked between bites “Oh Sam is my Mate, we found each other nearly 40 years ago now. That's why I live out here away from my pack, my Sam is a human, and my alpha just couldn’t accept that.” “A human?” I asked, my shock strong enough to take precedence over the food “ I didn’t know that was even possible!” “Oh it is” she chuckled, “the mate bond is about who they are, not what they are” she said with the patience of someone who’s had this same conversation a whole lot over the years. “Well...that’s just garbage. Findi
Cole was pacing again. After the trail had gone cold a week ago I’d given up waiting for my people to find my mate for me. In a fit of frustration I had driven out to her last known location hoping I'd be able to pick up on something they hadn’t. I’d found nothing, not even the tiniest hint of her scent even lingered, it was like she was never here. I should have known better, my people were the best, and if they hadn’t found anything then there was nothing to be found. A gnawing feeling had taken up residence in my gut, and the longer I was away from her the worse it got. I was barely sleeping these days, day and night my wolf was howling in my head for his mate, his desperation was only feeding my anxiety. Not knowing was tearing me apart. I needed to let my wolf out, I'd been holding back afraid of what would happen if I let that side of myself free. I had never gone this long without shifting, constantly battling myself wasn’t helping anything. I’d read som
I sat quietly while Sam drove, unsure what I could say to the gruff woman that would lighten the mood in the cab of the old truck. Sam and Elle’s place was a few miles outside of the main part of town and I spent the ride looking at the houses that were nestled back into the hillsides and cliffs along the ocean’s edge. I loved the way the trees seemed grow by clinging onto the rocks and how they were shaped by the coastal storms, it was all so vastly different from lands I had grown up on. I found myself enthralled by the smallest things, a peek of the ocean as we turn a corner, the bright pinks of the flowers that seemed to grow everywhere, fishermen going about their day working on the docks, my eyes ate up the details. As we came into town, I tried to pay attention to the streets we were passing, their names and the businesses on them, so I could build a mental map of my new home. It was difficult, the uniformity of the white buildings that made the town look s
The drive out to the campground was a short one, I just followed the highway and soon enough I found the turn off I was looking for. Once I hit the dirt road, I turned off all the lights and allowed my wolf to come forward enough to enhance my senses. Driving to the back of the campground I backed into a space that was well hidden. Stripping down to my bare skin I piled all my clothes onto the back seat. I had a special hiding place for the keys for times just like this, since I couldn’t exactly carry them, and I hated just leaving her unlocked.I took one step out away from the car and finally released my hold on my wolf, allowing him to come fully forward, on the second step hair sprouted all over my body, by the third you could hear my bones breaking and reshaping, and at the fourth step I was walking on all fours, fully transformed. Some took longer to transition, but being an alpha definitely had it’s perks. Being in my wolf form was pure joy for me, and I ho
