LOGINThe hospital gave me two days to settle down before starting work. This was at least some time to keep my things in order.
So Tuan Tuan and I moved into an apartment we bought at the Eastern Palace. It was a nice place, though not nearly as luxurious as the kind of homes people like Qing Han lived in. All that mattered was that it was mine. I finally had a place of my own, and I did not have to depend on anyone. I chose the place because it was quiet ans secluded. It would not be so easy for my enemies to find me. Since I could not leave Tuan Tuan home alone, I enrolled him in a daycare, even though he did not like it much. He was still too young for school, and I had always believed that forcing a child to start too early would only make them hate it later. “But mama, I don't like staying here,” he said, his eyes a little downcast. “I liked it more when I stayed home with Big Xuan. Can Big Xuan come to the country with us?“ I sighed deeply. “Sweetheart, Big Xuan is busy for now. But I'm sure he'll come to visit when he has time,” I explained. Mo Xuan had been a great help abroad. Tuan Tuan and he were very close. It was reasonable that he missed him. After making sure Tuan Tuan was ready for the day, I left for work, promising him that I would pick him up as soon as I finished. I was given a schedule for the day, and the first task was induction. We had barely started when Mr. Zhong appeared. "Doctor Wan Mei, what are you doing right now?" he asked. He was polite as always, and I had already begun to admire his calm leadership style. "I just started my induction," I said. He looked at me for a moment before sighing, which made me uneasy. "Pause the induction for now. There is a patient I would like you to check on in room 525," he said. I was surprised. I had just arrived and barely knew my way around the hospital. "But sir, I just got here," I tried to explain. Mr. Zhong pressed his lips together. "I would not ask if it were not important. Please go to room 525." I hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded. "Okay, sir." Even though I did not understand why he wanted me to see that patient, I decided to follow his instructions. It would not look good to start off by refusing. He gave me directions, and I took the elevator up. Room 525 was on the top floor of the building. Strangely, it was the only room there. It was clearly the best suite in the hospital. I frowned. Who could possibly be staying in a room like that? After a moment, I knocked. When no one answered, I pushed the door open and stepped inside. That was what doctors did. I assumed the patient might be too weak to respond, so I took the initiative. A man stood by the window, dressed in a black suit. "I did not expect you to be out of bed," I said, walking toward him. But when he turned around, hands in his pockets, I froze. For a few seconds, I could not move. My hands trembled as I stared at his face. Then instinct kicked in. I needed to run. Qing Han. Mr. Zhong had set me up. No wonder he had looked uneasy earlier. I turned to leave, but before I could reach the door, someone closed it from the outside. We were locked in. Still, I tried the handle, but it would not budge. I turned back slowly, facing the man who looked like he wanted to crush the air out of me. "Qing Han… what are you doing here?" I asked, my voice shaking. He stared at me for a long moment before scoffing. "I thought you would pretend not to know me," he said. His voice was cold, sharp enough to make my skin crawl. "What do you want?" I asked, glancing around the room. "What I want?" he repeated, stepping closer. "Do not do anything," I said, backing away, but it was too late. He grabbed me by the neck and slammed me against the wall. "You are asking what I want? I should be asking you that. Why are you back?" I struggled to breathe, clawing at his hand. "It has nothing to do with you," I managed to say. His expression darkened. "Oh? After you scammed money from my mother? After you—" He stopped, closing his eyes tightly. I knew what he wanted to say. "I never liked you, Chen Xiu," he said through clenched teeth. "But I did not think you were a murderer. You killed my child." His grip tightened, cutting off my air. For a moment, I thought he would actually kill me. I could not blame him for being angry. I had made him believe I ended my pregnancy before I left. Qing Han was heartless. That was how he had been raised—to protect the Qing family and its name at any cost. If I made one wrong move, he would lose control and finish me. No one would ever know what happened. And all I could think about was my son. I could not let Tuan Tuan grow up without a mother. "What do you want?" I gasped. "Tell me. I will do anything." His grip tightened again, as if my words only made him angrier. Just when I thought I was going to die, he let go. I collapsed to the floor, gasping for air. I had survived by sheer luck. Qing Han looked down at me with disgust. "Stay away from me and my family. If I ever see you near them again, I will kill you." Even though I was terrified, anger burned inside me. "That is what I was planning to do anyway. Who do you think you are?" I said. He stopped at the door and turned his head slightly. "What did you just say?" His voice was ice cold.Qing Han didn't leave the hospital again that day. I knew he was worried something would happen once he was gone.Mo Xuan came back with supper, but he didn't stay long, probably because of Qing Han.I could only sigh. I still wished that the two of them got along soon. “I'll see you tomorrow,” he said, patting Tuan Tuan's head. After he left, I looked at Qing Han. “You should talk to him,” I said.Qing Han raised his brows. “If I talk to him, I will end up telling him that you belong to me. We might fight, and I'm scared you will take his side again.”I sighed deeply. “What? I apologized for that…”I felt helpless. It was like he was never going to forget that I took Mo Xuan's side the other night. He wanted to speak, but Tuan Tuan shouted, pointing at the screen. “Mama, see! The bad woman is on TV!”Both Qing Han and I turned to look at the screen on the wall. And truly, we saw Chen Ran.Her face was swollen and her one eye bandaged. Reporters were running after her.“Is it true tha
Xiao Yu woke up in the morning with slight pain all over her body. First, her mind went blank when she noticed the light in the room. Her eyes instinctively moved to the clock on the wall. It was nine o'clock in the morning. Her eyes opened wide in fear.It was Monday morning. She was supposed to be at work already. She reached for her alarm clock on the bedside table. She hadn't switched off the alarm. Why didn't she hear it?She wanted to get up, even though she knew clearly that she wouldn't make it to work on time. But then, she noticed herself. She was naked, and her body…She instinctively turned to look at the bed beside her. She remembered what had happened between her boss and her at night. But the space beside her in the bed was empty. The bathroom door was open, so she knew he wasn't there.“Sh*t!“ She cursed, holding her aching head. “How could I have been so stupid?“She had stayed for so long without ever giving herself to a man. She had always turned them down. And just
Huo Ting Xiao sighed deeply when he saw her reaction. “It's late at night, and I think it's just about to rain. Will it hurt if I spend the night?”Xiao Yu coughed awkwardly the moment he asked the question. And it was only after she had calmed down that she quickly shook her head. “No! You can't."Huo Ting Xiao didn't seem offended. He just stood up, and Xiao Yu sighed inwardly, thinking that he was finally leaving. But to her surprise, he took steps towards her.She remembered the encounter in his office the other day and shrank back in fear. “Hey…”“What? I thought we had enough fun the other day,” Huo Ting Xiao said, backing her into a corner. And when she finally had nowhere to run to, a small smile appeared on his lips. “Why do you keep running from me? I don't eat people…”He stopped and sighed. “But I wouldn't mind eating a girl as beautiful as you…”“Sir…” Xiao Yu said, her face blushing. “You can't say such words. You have to respect yourself."He pinned her against the wall
When Xiao Yu got home, she was feeling a little exhausted. So she took a bath before preparing for bed. However, she had just turned off the lights when her doorbell rang. She stood in place for a few seconds, thinking that she might have heard her own things. She wasn't expecting anyone at that time, and the only people who could visit her were Chen Xiu or her mom. They were both at the hospital. She shook her head and was about to go to bed when the doorbell rang again. This time, she was sure she had heard it correctly. She took quiet steps towards the door and peeked through the keyhole. And her heart froze.Huo Ting Xiao? She opened her eyes wide in shock. What was he doing at her door at such a time? She stayed still for a while, not sure what to do. She still remembered the man teasing her. She had done her best to avoid him at work after that. She even left work earlier just to avoid running into him.“I heard you. Open up,” Huo Ting Xiao's voice was heard from outside. Had Xi
He sighed and got in bed beside me. He wrapped his arms around me tightly. “Aren't you mad that I took the knife?” he asked.I shook my head at him. “No, those people have to pay for what they did.”He nodded. “Good.”He was silent for a few seconds before looking at me again. “Who was it?” he asked.“Who?” I asked in confusion. Sometimes he asked questions just out of nowhere, making it difficult for someone to understand.“The friend you were chatting with earlier,” he said, his voice low.I immediately chuckled, looking at him with taunting eyes. “What? Why do you want to know? Are you jealous?”Qing Han pouted. He looked rather cute pouting like that. “I'm not jealous. I just want to know who he is,” he said.“He is no one,” I said playfully. I was getting really used to being close to him.He held my cheeks and looked at me seriously. “He?” he asked.I laughed even more, but I covered my mouth with the fear that I would wake Tuan Tuan up. “Is something wrong?”“Let me see who he
“Yes, sir,” the men replied.Chen Ran seemed to tense up more. “No! Don't take my eyes off. You can't do this to me.”“Get her out of here before she ruins our appetite,” he said, an irritated look on his face. But a gentle smile appeared on his face the moment the door was closed. “Have you decided what you want to eat?”But I narrowed my brows and looked up at him. “Did you mean that?”“What?” he asked, carrying Tuan Tuan and putting him on my bed. “Taking her eyes off?”“The knife,” I said. “Is it with the police now?”Qing Han paused for a second to look at me. He was so calm you wouldn't think he had just ordered three people to be blinded. “What? You feel bad for them now?”“Is it?” I asked again. He was trying to avoid answering my question. He sighed again. “Yes, it is. They were looking for it so hard that they wanted to hurt you.”I scoffed. “So it was you all along. You had the knife, didn't you?”Qing Han held my hand and looked at me quietly. “Yeah, I had someone take it.
…While Chen Xiu and Mo Xuan were having fun, Qing Han was standing by the window of the house across the street. His brother, Qing An Xin, was playing on his phone, still not sure why his brother had, who never liked it visit him, shown up at his house and gone straight to the window.“What are yo
I called Mo Xuan, and he admitted that he had Tuan Tuan. However, he was still mad at me for ignoring his calls the previous day, so he only gave me an address before hanging up. I was a little mad at him too. He hadn’t even said anything about coming to the country. How could he take Tuan Tuan a
It was late by the time I got to Yu’s place. I had texted her earlier to pick Tuan Tuan up from daycare because I knew I wouldn’t make it on time.Tuan Tuan had a pout on his face when he saw me. “You promised to pick me up, Mama,” he said in his childish voice.I sighed deeply and pulled him into
A painful lump formed in my throat the moment Qing Han began speaking. Since he thought he couldn’t hurt me enough, he had decided to target my friends.First, I knew that if he really investigated, he would find out that the report was forged. Then he would find out about Tuan Tuan.He was going t
