The relief was immediate the moment the hatch on Icaan's ship shut behind us both. Icaan didn't take the leash and collar off me right away, but he disconnected it from him so he could install the water canister he'd come back with.
I was still standing by the door when he came back.
"Okay, there's clearly something bothering you. Out with it," he said.
I frowned, having thought about it all the way back. I wasn't sure I'd wanted to say what it was, but he clearly wasn't going to let it go.
"I thought you'd have enjoyed getting to stretch your legs and see another planet."
"I did, but I guess a part of me hoped that necklace had a large reward. Maybe one large enough that you'd have considered letting me go," I replied, watching his face as I spoke to see if it ma
We stayed cuddling at the dining table for some time, a blanket draped around me and my body in his arms. I tried not to think about what I'd done and instead focused on how much better I felt.Eventually a beeping from the cockpit disturbed us and Icaan picked me up and put me down on the bench the other side of the table."That will be our window to get in the air. Have a drink and rest a moment. I'm not done with you," he said.I blinked, the last sentence making me feel an array of different emotions I wasn't sure I could place. Was he promising to blow my mind even further?Whatever it was, I wasn't sure I wanted to do anything until I'd done the other part of the instruction. I helped myself to a glass of water, noticing my clothes discarded on the floor.Fo
I woke alone, my hands bound together and my feet the same. Sighing I realized I was still on the mattress in the middle of Icaan's room. Still a captive and still being taken toward the Frentin market. Where I would be officially registered as a new human slave and sold to the highest bidder. It was almost enough to make a person feel sick. But the truth was I couldn't bring myself to think about it for too long. It just made me angry or likely to do something stupid in desperation. So far it seemed like my plan to stay calm and get to know him might be working. He'd not responded amazingly well to my suggestion that being given a woman free to think and decide was far better than taking advantage of one seduced by the chemicals his body filled the air with, but he'd not responded badly either. At first I didn't get up, but nature ca
Suddenly there was clear space ahead of me and I sat back, my shoulders and arms aching from the tension. Almost immediately Icaan flicked the ship onto autopilot."Nice flying," he said. "I guess you've earned those strawberries."I grinned, not sure what else to do suddenly. It had felt good to be controlling a ship again, guiding it where it needed to go and trusting the instruments and my reflexes. Despite that, I was also glad it was over. There was only so much pressure a person could take before they fouled something up.At the moment I looked good in Icaan's eyes. That was enough."So what's our next stop?" I asked."The market," Icaan replied."But it's another eight days away. Are you really not stopping anywhere in be
We sat down to eat lunch together, and again I'd prepared us something. It was yet another attempt of mine to make myself seem worth keeping, and Icaan moaned in delight as soon as he tucked into the food."You can definitely handle food well," he replied. "Did you work in some kind of space cafe or something?""No. I waitressed on a planet for a while before I got into space, but I was never allowed near the kitchen. Always out front dealing with customers and taking food and drinks back and forth. One of those massive open area ones where they order at the table and everything is brought to them by a person dressed up."He nodded as if he could picture what I meant, but I knew I didn't want to talk about me."What is it with the Frentin and slaves?" I asked. "You don't seem to think it's bad for t
Tired, and not sure what to do with myself, I continued to sit in the gunner's seat on Icaan's ship and tried to work out how I could get Icaan to talk more. There had to be some way to get him to open up. But he ignored me, not even flying the ship, but sitting in the pilot's seat anyway."So, what makes a slave valuable?" I asked. "If certain qualities make me worth more and your culture places value on what a slave can do as humans do on their free people, then it sounds like I should know what I can claim to be good at and what skills I might want to get better at."Icaan swiveled the seat around, his eyes a little wider at the question I'd asked. Had I surprised him?"There's a lot of different things," he said, rubbing his chin with his hand while he looked into the distance, thinking.I waite
The minutes ticked by, our ship beginning to inch ahead after some more rerouting of power from me, and some very impressive flying from Icaan. I'd opted to help him in the end, and see if I could win myself any more favor, but the truth was, if he hadn't been towing my ship we'd have been long gone."Let me power up the engine on my ship and at least vaguely steer it in the right direction.""You can't. I stripped too many parts out. And before you suggest that you could at least lower the resistance it causes I've already set it not to be a burden as much as possible. The extra movement and tweaks you'd be able to make wouldn't do enough for me to trust you over their alone.""It's not like I can steal it," I replied. "It's not working properly."Icaan laughed.
"It's clear that you were trying to hide something, and I'm willing to bet she's it. If I scan her, what am I going to find? And I warn you, Icaan, you can't afford to break another law while you've still got a debt to deal with."Icaan opened and closed his mouth a couple of times."You won't find a chip," he eventually said, glancing at me with a sadness in his eyes that was hidden again almost immediately.I exhaled, knowing that I was about to be taken by the enforcers."I didn't think so. She'd best come with us then. No doubt the human government will be pleased to get one of their citizens back.""We both know you're not going to return her to the humans," Icaan growled."If she requests to stay with us once we've... show
The commander looked at me."What do you want us to do now? She's told us the same thing. She should be returned to Icaan.""Do you want to give such a beautiful human back to a stuck up ex royal like him?" the commander asked."Of course not. We'd rather have some fun with them like we normally do and then put them in the system when we've got bored." The enforcer on my left leered at me, but the one on the right looked between the other two men in the room as if he wasn't so sure."They've all been lying in the past though.""It's possible this one is lying too, still. Jarlick?" the commander said, looking to my left. "See if you can get her to sing a different tune. And why not have some fun along the way."The commander toss
