Holly has a plan. A plan for vengeance against her father's unjust death. A plan to get back at those who most deserve it. She's going to kill the corrupt leaders of the Heavens pack. Even if it means her own death sentence. Nothing will stop her. But when the prince of the heavens pack catches her in the act, her life is in his hands. And he claims her as his own. His own, that he will share with his two brothers. The three of them stand for everything Holly is against. They're her enemies. Her captors. But when a new threat comes to the door they might be her only hope. Can she trust them to protect her if she leans on them? Or will they let her fall from the heavens...?
view moreHolly snarled a curse as the thick brambles wound their thorny claws through her dark hair. Whoever decided that poisonous plants should only be cultivated and found deep within the wood surrounding her pack lands should be bit. Hard. Preferably on the ass, for making her have to wade through so many thorny shrubs and prickling vines.
Her once white blouse was speckled with blood and covered in little tears. Just like the sensitive skin on her arms and the back of her pale hands. She'd be scratching at them for the rest of the day at this rate. All to get some fucking poison. It really should be easier. Though, she supposed if it was easier everyone might run around poisoning everyone else all willy-nilly. Maybe. It was hard to say if others had whatever moral deficiency she contained within her breastbone that led her to feeling like this eye for an eye action was correct. But it was. She was going to fucking kill them and it would be well deserved. Righteous even. And if the pack tore her piece from piece afterwards? So be it. She was prepared to weather all possible storms of bodily torture if she was caught. Even if she really really hoped she wouldn’t be. She shouldn’t be. Wouldn't be. It was a good plan. Not foolproof, but close enough that it should work. Slipping mistletoe berries into the mulled wine she’d be presenting to the Heavens Pack Alphas should go unnoticed. Even with a wolf's impressive sense of smell it would be nearly impossible for them to pick out the scent of the pearly white berries surrounded by the citrus, cinnamon, clove, and other spices fighting for the spotlight. And if anyone did smell the berries, well, the feast hall was already done up with boughs of holly and flashes of mistletoe over every door. No one would suspect the wine. Then, later, the pain would begin. The delirium. The internal damage that even a werewolf would struggle to heal from. And then? Death. And for her, peace. Revenge. It was more than warranted. It was what they deserved. For her father. For her. For every cold moment she endured on her own since they took him from her. It was going to end. Tonight. Whether or not she’d survive to see the next dawn was immaterial. It will end. Her quest for revenge would be over. And once it was over, only then, would she take stock. But first, she had to harvest these stupid fucking berries. She was deep in the woods now. The forest was so thick here that the weak winter light could barely pierce through to the shaded ground. No one should find her, spy on her, or question her presence. Really, it would be more strange for her to meet another soul here than not. Ah. There. In the crook of an old oak, the parasitic plant preened, green despite the winter's chill. Mistletoe. A sweet yuletide plant. Decorative, symbolic of warmth of the hearth through winter, loves first kiss.. And deadly, if used correctly. Really this was a much better plan than her previous one. The one where she would rush the heavens castle, sword drawn, canines bared, and try to cut through each and every noble on her way towards the zenith of her revenge. Less, flashy, less potent, less likely to end with her head on a pike. Yes. This was the way to go. And to think, she’d only thought of it that morning. No one would ever accuse her of being patient and calculating but Holly liked to think she more than made up for that in pure gall. And that's what helped her survive all these years alone. Gall and backbone, pure and simple. The truth was wolves weren't meant to be alone. They thrived off of the close community ties in their pack, so for her, to lose her entire pack when she was only eight was really a devastating blow. Yes, Aunt Criselda took her in as a pup. But she was a cold and bitter old woman who never bothered to see to it that Holly was accepted in her new home. And so she wasn't. It was fine. It was totally fine. Holly could play the lone wolf. It gave her time to stew in her own bitterness and plan her revenge. She wasn't sure how many berries would be necessary. There were four targets. The king and his three nephews. The Heavens Triplets. Each more powerful and dangerous than the last. Rumor had it that the triplets were planning to betray the king and take his throne. Rumors in the packlands were always so sensational. And never substantiated. But… she'd seen them arrive that morning. One of them at least. She'd spotted him from where she stood in the crowd. His square jaw illuminated by the morning light, the winter sun cast a blue sheen to his black hair. He was handsome. Undeservedly so. And yet… There was something in his grey eyes. Something cold and callous. Something she recognized on a basal level. Murderer. Killer. Predator. Just like her. And who better to kill a pack of predators than another predator? They were in her territory now, she was about to make them rue the day they were born. A sharp smile lit her face and she proceeded to pick every berry off the plant.CYRUS Cyrus toed the hard packed dirt of the Ashland Pack ceremonial grounds. The morning sun was a spear of light in the sky, The pin prick of light was doing little to nothing to warm the chilled masses that had gathered for the girl's punishment. No, not the girl. Holly. He'd learnt her name from one of the passing omegas last night after he had stormed out of the dungeon in a huff. Not that he'd admit to his brothers that he'd been acting huffily. Even when they called him on it.He didn't know what but something about that girl ruffled all of his feathers. And now here he was watching her corporal punishment. He should be enthused but he felt nothing but dread. He didn't actually want her to be hurt. This was just the only way he could think to keep her from getting killed If he'd been given a week he surely could have come up with something better but on the spot this was the best he could do. Four lashings. She'd survive. But she'd hate them for it.Nevertheless, as long as s
HOLLYThere was a crack in the wall. Not big enough for Holly to squeeze through and escape from the dungeon, but big enough for a cold wind to come whistling through the opening and chill Holly's bones. Holly had never been in the dungeon before. She'd been in plenty of trouble over her life but the Alpha tended towards flash point punishments that happened immediately. There had never been any reason for her to be detained longer than an hour. And now here she was, awaiting her execution.Holly slumped back against the cold stones. Her shackles jangled as she adjusted to try to get more comfortable. It didn't work. The little cell they'd shoved her in was cold and damp and about the size of a pantry. There was no bed or cot, only a pile of unfortunate smelling blankets in the corner she refused to touch. She was going to catch a chill at this rate.Holly scoffed. She'd catch a chill just in time for her execution. She drew her knees up to her chest and laid her chin on them. Wrap
Chapter TenLUCAS“What the fuck, Cyrus? Lashes?!”The door had barely closed behind them before Sorin was on Cyrus, pushing his brother against a wall with a dangerous gleam in his eye. Cyrus’s head gave a hard thunk where it bounced against the wood of the door but he didn’t seem bothered. Instead he just shot Sorin a smug smile that only served to engage him further.Sorin growled, eyes flashing. Lucas could tell his wolf was close to the surface. The display was making his own wolf antsy and on edge. The last thing they needed was a brawl between them. Especially in foreign territory where anyone could see. They fought like cats and dogs, had done so since they were pups, but never in public where someone could see. In public they always backed each other up and they always always were on the same page. That’s what made Cy’s actions with this girl, this omega, so stunning. Lucas wasn’t ready to throw down with Cyrus over her, not yet at least, but he didn’t understand what Cy was
LUCASLucas stared at the girl's limp form. Her dark hair covered her face where it had slammed against the tiled floor. No one had even stepped forward to catch her when she fell. Lucas had tried, so had Sorin, but they’d both been too far to make it in time. They were faster than the average wolf, but not that fast.Lucas's stomach turned sourly. This boondocks pack was awful. The omegas he'd been flirting with had all been so eager to get out of here and no wonder. This place sucked the light right out of you. He’d never seen such quick retribution over something that could so easily have been an accident. How could a pack treat one of their own so rottenly on just the suspicion of a mistake. They didn't even give her a chance to say her piece before a wolf three times her size knocked her out. It was ludicrous.Based on what Cyrus had told him about a possible assasination attempt it probably wasn’t an accident. But still. And now Cy seemed to be playing at something larger. If he
HOLLYFuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.Holly stared in horror at the mess of wine and berries on the floor, seeping away from her like the blood in her face.Fuck. Shit. Hell. “YOU WOLFLESS PIECE OF SHIT. LOOK AT WHAT YOU'VE DONE!”She looked up and met the eyes of her furious Alpha. He was half out of his chair and spitting with anger. She began to stutter an apology, hoping he was just angry about the mess. That he didn't notice what exactly was in the jug.She wasn't that lucky.A gasp sounded behind her and her shoulders tightened up to her ears. Don't say it don't say it don't-“Those berries are mistletoe!”Goddess dammit. Holly glanced over her shoulder at the female beta who'd announced to the whole room her plan. It was Veronica. Of fucking course it was.Veronica was always trying to stir shit. She loved to make the omegas’ lives hell, most of all Holly. “She tried to kill the King!” Veronica screeched, like she just had to make sure that everyone in the room made the connect
CYRUSLucas was late. That wasn't unusual. But what was unusual was the frenetic energy radiating through Cyrus's entire body. He prided himself on being cool and collected but he felt like he'd been bit by a live wire. He was practically bouncing with nerves. And Lucas still hadn't arrived. He'd be punished horribly by their uncle for his tardiness. But it wasn't even that. He knew as well as Cyrus did that Sorin hated these dinners and he always made sure to be there for him as a buffer. Cyrus wasn't any good as a buffer. He'd still try though.“What did Luc say he was doing before dinner?” He asked Sorin, leaning over his untouched chicken. It was dry. This Pack's chef paled in comparison to the chefs at the castle.Sorin shot him a disgruntled look. “He didn't say anything. He just fucked off with the first piece of tail he spotted.”Cyrus huffed a laugh. That sounded like Lucas alright. He was always after some girl or other. It was a coping mechanism, Cyrus knew. Lucas couldn't
