INICIAR SESIÓN
The heavy black Range Rover crunched over the gravel driveway, pulling to a stop before the grand stone staircase of the Grey mansion. Cassie stared through the tinted glass at the three story estate. The massive limestone pillars and dark iron balconies looked less like a home and more like a gilded fortress.
Beside her in the leather backseat, her mother, Veronica, kept adjusting the collar of her navy dress. Her fingers trembled against the fabric.
"Does it look okay, Cassie?" Veronica asked, her voice tight with anxiety. "I want everything to be right. This is our chance for a fresh start. A real one."
"You look beautiful, Mom," Cassie said softly. She reached over and gently covered her mother's shaking hand. "Just breathe."
Cassie kept her voice steady, but inside, her own chest felt crushed under an invisible weight. Two days ago, her entire world had cracked open when she caught her boyfriend and her best friend together in bed. The betrayal was still a raw, jagged edge in her ribcage. It was a brutal reminder of a truth she should have never forgotten: people lie, and trust is a dangerous luxury.
Yet, a far darker fear sat in the pit of her stomach as she stared up at the mansion. Garrett Grey was a powerful billionaire, a man who held the city in his palm. Cassie prayed with every fiber of her being that Garrett would not turn out to be like her former stepfather, Richard Greene. Richard had spent years terrorizing their small apartment, turning every evening into a nightmare of raised fists and bruised skin. The terror reached its boiling point the night Richard tried to force his way into Cassie's bedroom, leaving her no choice but to fight back with every ounce of strength she had just to escape.
She had sworn then that no man would ever put a hand on her or her mother again.
The driver opened the door, and cold afternoon air rushed into the vehicle. Cassie stepped out onto the driveway, smoothing down her dark jacket.
A butler ushered them into the vast foyer. The white marble floor polished to a mirror shine reflected the sprawling crystal chandelier hanging high above.
Over toward the adjoining open kitchen, two young men stood near the marble counter. Alex Grey held a tumbler of sparkling water in his hand, his tall, broad frame wrapped in a sharp charcoal suit jacket. He possessed a sharp jawline and stormy grey eyes that looked utterly exhausted, as if carrying the weight of his father's global empire was slowly draining the life out of him. Beside him was his male best friend, dressed casually, laughing quietly at a joke.
Standing a few feet away was Celeste, Alex's high society girlfriend. Draped in a tailored ivory beige dress with perfectly styled blonde hair, Celeste looked like she belonged on the cover of a luxury magazine. Her eyes swept over Cassie and Veronica with immediate, cold disdain, as if the very sight of them ruined the room.
Garrett Grey stepped down the grand staircase, his face breaking into a warm, genuine smile the moment he saw Veronica.
"Veronica," Garrett said, his tone deep and welcoming as he approached. He took her hands in his with gentle care. "I am so glad you both arrived safely."
"Thank you, Garrett," Veronica said, a small, tentative relief washing over her face.
"Cassie, welcome to our home," Garrett added, giving her a polite nod. He turned to the head housekeeper waiting nearby. "Please take Cassie's bags up to the east wing guest room so she can settle in."
Before the housekeeper could step forward, the heavy double doors at the entrance clicked open. High heels tapped loudly against the marble floor.
Every person in the foyer went still.
Victoria Grey walked into the room, wearing a striking red designer coat. Her face was locked in a bitter mask. After her public cheating scandal, Garrett had filed for divorce and strictly barred her from setting foot on the property. Her unexpected appearance sent an immediate wave of suffocating tension through the room.
Victoria stopped a few feet from Veronica, her eyes burning with vicious malice.
"So this is what you replaced me with, Garrett?" Victoria spat out, her tone dripping with toxic contempt. "A cheap, desperate nobody."
Celeste smirked from the kitchen counter, crossing her arms as she watched the spectacle unfold.
Veronica flinched, but she kept her composure. She already knew the messy reality of Garrett's ongoing divorce and chose not to dignify the insult with a response.
Garrett's jaw tightened into a hard line. "Victoria, you are not supposed to be in this house. We have nothing left to say to each other outside of our lawyers."
"I came to see my son," Victoria said, though her glare remained fixed on Veronica.
Alex did not even blink. He took a slow sip from his glass, completely unbothered by his mother's dramatic entrance. "Garrett is right, Victoria," Alex said casually, his voice flat. "You should leave before security escort you out."
Garrett stepped between Victoria and Veronica, his voice cold and absolute. "In my office. Now. Before I have the guards remove you permanently."
Garrett led Victoria down the side hallway toward his study to handle the divorce dispute away from the foyer.
"I will take your bag up, Miss," the housekeeper murmured politely to Cassie.
Cassie nodded thanks and followed the maid up the grand staircase toward the guest wing, eager to escape the suffocating atmosphere downstairs.
A few minutes later, Cassie stood inside her new bedroom. The room was immense, furnished with soft grey carpets, a king size bed, and floor to ceiling windows overlooking the vast estate grounds.
She heard footsteps approaching down the hallway. Her door was still propped open. Alex's male friend paused outside the threshold, offering Cassie a warm, genuine smile.
"Hey, welcome to the house," he said kindly. "I am Liam. If you need anything, just ask the staff."
"Thank you, Liam," Cassie replied politely.
Liam offered a short wave and continued down the hall toward the terrace where Celeste was waiting.
A moment later, a tall shadow blocked the doorway.
Alex Grey stepped inside. He did not ask for permission. He closed the door behind him with a quiet, deliberate click, cutting off the rest of the mansion.
Alex stepped closer, his stormy grey eyes fixing on Cassie with ruthless intensity. The faint warmth Garrett had shown downstairs was completely absent in his son. Alex carried the cold, calculating aura of a man who controlled everything around him.
"Let us get one thing straight," Alex said, his voice low and dangerous. He stepped right into her personal space, towering over her. "My father might be blind enough to let your mother into his life, but I am not."
Cassie did not flinch. She stood her ground, looking straight into his eyes. "Excuse me?"
"I know exactly what you and your mother are doing," Alex continued, his eyes scanning her face with cold disgust. "You saw an old billionaire with deep pockets, and you jumped at the chance. But if you think you are going to manipulate my father and walk away with a single dollar of the Grey fortune, you are severely mistaken."
The sheer arrogance of his words made a sharp spark of anger flare in Cassie's chest. After everything she and her mother had endured, after barely surviving the horrors of Richard Greene, being called a gold digger by a spoiled heir was almost laughable.
"You don't know a single thing about my mother," Cassie said through gritted teeth, her voice steady and sharp as steel. "And you certainly don't know me."
Alex tilted his head, his expression remaining completely unreadable. "I know your type. And I am warning you now, Cassie. Watch your step in this house. I will be watching every move you make."
Without another word, Alex turned on his heel and walked out, leaving the bedroom door resting open behind him.
Cassie stood motionless in the center of the room as his heavy footsteps faded down the corridor. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but it was not out of fear. It was out of cold, hard realization.
Garrett Grey might not be the monster in this house. But her cold, arrogant stepbrother certainly was.
Cassie stepped forwar and grabbed the edge of the door, and pushed it shut until the lock engaged with a sharp, echoing click.
She walked over to the full length mirror on the wall. Stripping off her dark jacket, she dropped it to the floor and stared at her reflection. Her dark eyes were fierce, steady, and unyielding. The bruises of her past were hidden, but the strength they gave her was right there on her face.
Looking straight into her own eyes, she whispered to the quiet room:
"Alex thinks he can crush me. He has no idea that I am done being anyone's victim."
The heavy double doors of the private study clicked shut behind them, cutting off the vast, dark hallway of the estate. The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a single brass desk lamp, casting long shadows across the floorboards.Alex let go of her wrist, walking straight toward his desk. He pulled out her phone, staring at the dark screen with a lethal focus that made the room feel tight and airless."Alex, please," Cassie gasped, her voice shaking violently as she stepped closer to the desk. "You do not understand what you are doing. I need to handle this on my own. If my mother finds out about this, it will destroy her. She barely survived him the first time. I would rather deal with his threats every day for the rest of my life than let him ruin her peace here.""You are not handling anything on your own," Alex said, his voice flat and stern. "You are being hunted by a criminal, Cassie.""It is my mess!" she cried out, her chest heaving as tears finally spilled over her eye
Cassie pressed her back against the wooden back of the chair, her chest rising and falling in short, uneven breaths. She quickly brought her hands up to her face, using her long sleeves to scrub the wetness from her cheeks and under her eyes. She hated being caught like this. She hated feeling small, weak, and exposed, especially in front of him."I thought everyone was asleep," Cassie said, her voice rough and unsteady. She forced herself to stand up from the table, smoothing down her sweater and keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the dark floorboards between them. "I was just about to head upstairs."She tried to brush past him, taking a wide step toward the arched exit. But Alex moved with effortless, terrifying speed. He stepped directly into her path, his broad frame blocking the moonlight spilling from the hallway and casting a long shadow over her."Do not bother lying to me, Cassie," Alex said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble in the quiet room.Cassie stopped in her tracks, ref
Cassie woke up to a soft, rhythmic knock on her heavy bedroom door, the muffled sound pulling her out of a dark, dreamless sleep. She sat up slowly on the edge of the mattress, her body feeling heavy and exhausted. She had spent the entire late afternoon curled up in the dark, crying until her head throbbed and her eyes burned."Miss Cassie?" the polite voice of the estate chef called out from the hallway. "Dinner is served in the main dining room.""Thank you, I will be right down," Cassie called back, her voice sounding raspy and weak even to her own ears. She waited until the chef's footsteps faded down the hall before pulling herself up from the bed. She walked into the adjacent bathroom and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her face was pale, her nose was slightly pink, and dark shadows rested under her eyes. She splashed icy water over her face three times, pressing a cool towel against her skin to reduce the swelling. She combed through her hair, pulled on a simple long s
Cassie broke eye contact instantly, dropping her gaze back down to her glass as her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She felt completely exposed, sitting there in the warm afternoon light with her deepest denial crumbling apart. She tried to take a slow breath, forcing her shoulders to stay relaxed so no one at the table would notice the storm crashing inside her chest.Across the low glass table, Liam set his drink down with a loud clatter and leaned back against the wicker sofa cushions. A lazy grin spread across his face as he looked over at Alex, who was still sitting rigid and brooding in his chair."Look at him, Celeste," Liam said with a light chuckle, shaking his head. "The man looks like he is attending a high stakes business meeting instead of enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. I do not think I have seen him crack a real smile all week."Celeste giggled softly, leaning her weight against Alex's arm and resting her cheek right against his shoulder. Her long nails ligh
Morning sunlight poured into Cassie's guest room, pulling her out of a restless sleep. She sat up on the edge of the mattress and ran a hand through her hair. The memory of Alex pressing her against the hallway wall the night before rushed right back into her mind, making her pulse jump. She shook her head and pushed the thought away. Since she was currently on a school break with two years left before she finally graduated, she refused to sit around and waste her time. She stood up, opened her laptop, and laid out her sketchbooks on the small wooden desk by the window. If Alex wanted to play games and act like a ghost, she could focus entirely on her fashion designs and keep her mind occupied. The quiet stillness of the house broke when footsteps echoed down the hall. Cassie decided to head downstairs to grab a cup of coffee and clear her head. She walked into the bright and airy dining room where Veronica and Garrett sat together over morning coffee, talking quietly about upcoming p
Cassie stepped back inside the brightly lit ballroom, taking a slow breath to calm her nerves. The cold air of the terrace was still fresh on her skin, but she smoothed down her dress and kept her head up. She found her mother standing near Garrett, talking to a small group of investors.Veronica looked over, her face softening when she saw her daughter. "There you are, sweetie. Are you doing okay?""I am fine, Mom," Cassie said, giving a reassuring smile. "Just needed a minute to catch my breath."Garrett checked his watch and gave a warm nod. "It has been a long night, but a good one. I think it is time we head back."As they moved toward the front doors of the hotel, Alex rejoined the group. He walked with a quiet confidence, his dark suit making him stand out in the crowded lobby. His face was a cold mask, but when his eyes landed on Cassie, the heavy look in his eyes told her everything. The moment on the terrace was far from forgotten.Outside, the valets held open the doors to
