LOGINInside her large guest room, Cassie stood near the wardrobe, carefully putting away her clothes. Her hands moved with quiet focus, hanging each simple shirt and jacket one by one. She needed this routine. She needed a simple task to steady her mind in this huge house that felt less like a safe home and more like a golden cage.
A soft knock sounded at her door.
Cassie stopped, her shoulders tightening at once. She took a quiet breath, smoothed her black jeans, and walked over to open the doors.
A young woman in a clean house staff uniform stood in the hallway with her hands resting together. She gave a small, polite smile. "Miss Cassie? Dinner is ready downstairs in the main room. Mr. Grey asked for the whole family to eat together tonight."
"Thank you," Cassie said softly. "I will be right down."
She waited until the staff member walked back down the hall before shutting the door. As a family. The words felt heavy. Her mother wanted this fresh start so badly, desperate for a peaceful life after everything they had gone through. Cassie promised herself she would keep her chin up, swallow her pride, and handle whatever anger this house threw at her to protect her mother.
When Cassie walked down the grand stairs, she found Garrett Grey and her mother already sitting at the long dining table. Veronica looked beautiful in a dark blue dress, though her hands showed her nervousness. Garrett sat at the head of the table, his face tight as he looked at the empty seat beside him.
"Mom," Cassie said gently, sitting in the chair next to her mother.
"Cassie, sweetie," Veronica replied with a quick smile, her fingers playing with her napkin.
Garrett looked up and forced a warm smile. "Cassie, please sit down. I want you to feel totally at home here." He pointed toward the food before letting out a slow sigh, glancing back at the empty chair. "I have to apologize for my son. Alex left the house with his friends ."
Garrett picked up his glass, his jaw tight with clear annoyance. "I cannot stand the crowd Alex keeps around himself these days. Those friends of his are doing nothing but pulling his mind away from the family business. He has real work waiting for him at the company, yet he lets them distract him with night life and fast living."
Veronica gently placed her hand on Garrett's arm. "Give him time, Garrett. This is a big change for everyone."
Garrett softened a little, covering her hand with his own. He turned back to Cassie, his voice much warmer. "Anyway, we are glad both of you are here. Tomorrow night, we have an important company event to attend together as a family. The board, investors, and news people will all be there. It is very important that we all look and act our absolute best."
"We will be ready, Mr. Grey," Cassie answered politely, holding her posture straight.
"Call me Garrett, please," he smiled back. "Eat up, both of you."
Dinner went on with quiet talk between Garrett and Veronica. Cassie ate just a little, listening while her mind moved to the long road ahead of her to get into fashion school.
When the meal ended, Garrett and Veronica excused themselves to head upstairs for the night.
The dining room became dead silent.
Even though no one asked her to, Cassie gathered her empty plate and cup. It was a habit she could not break, raised on taking care of herself. She carried the dishes down the quiet hallway and into the large kitchen.
The kitchen was spotless and lit by soft lights under the cabinets. Cassie put her dishes near the sink. She pulled her phone from her pocket and left it face up on the cool marble island while stepping over to get a glass of water.
The sound of heavy footsteps on the floor made her freeze.
Alex walked into the kitchen.
He had taken off his dark suit jacket, the top buttons of his black shirt open, rolling his sleeves up his arms. He looked tired, sharp, and hard to ignore.
Cassie's heart beat fast against her ribs as she remembered his harsh words in her room earlier. She moved to step away from the island right away, wanting to avoid him completely. She just wanted her phone so she could get out of there.
Before she could move away, her phone screen lit up on the dark counter. A bright pop up message filled the screen.
Alex stopped by the edge of the island. His eyes dropped to the glass screen.
Cassie reached out fast to grab her phone, but she was a second too late. Alex had already read the text message from her ex boyfriend:
"Cassie, please answer me. I know cheating on you with her was the worst mistake of my life. Just tell me how your fashion school plans are going. I know how much that means to you."
A heavy silence fell over the room.
Cassie snatched her phone, her fingers shaking a bit as she held it tight to her chest. Her face burned with anger and embarrassment. She hated feeling exposed like this. She hated that this rich, arrogant guy just saw her most painful personal secret.
Alex did not move. He stood on the other side of the island, looking right at her face.
The mean look he wore earlier was gone. Now he just looked surprised. He was looking at her like he was seeing her clearly for the first time.
Instead, he was looking at a girl who had been deeply hurt by someone she use to trust m, quietly saving money and working for her own dream in fashion design.
"Who was that?" Alex asked. His voice was low and quiet, totally free of his earlier mean tone.
Cassie stepped back, her eyes cold. "That is none of your business."
Instead of letting her walk past, Alex stepped around the island. His tall body blocked her path to the door, trapping her close to him. The air between them felt thick and full of tension.
"He cheated on you?" Alex asked, his eyes staying on hers.
Cassie held her breath, refusing to back down even with him standing so close. She could feel the warmth coming off him and the quiet scent of wood smoke on his shirt.
"I told you to stay out of my life, Alex," Cassie said, keeping her voice steady. "You do not know me. You do not get to ask about my past."
Alex looked down at her, seeing how straight she stood. She was not crying, she was not acting weak, and she was not trying to act sweet for him. She was standing up to him without any fear.
"A girl like you... letting some guy walk all over you," Alex said softly, his eyes staying dark as he watched her. "And you are trying to pay for fashion school yourself?"
"I do not need your pity, and I do not need your opinion," Cassie said back, her chest moving up and down fast. "I never asked you to sympathize with me neither am I dependent on you."
Silence stretched between them, heavy and quiet.
Alex did not throw another insult. He did not threaten her this time. He just stood there inches away, seeing clearly that she was not afraid of him. The angry fight from earlier had turned into something else, a quiet realization between two people who kept their guards up.
Alex took a slow step back, opening the path to the hallway.
"Get some rest, Cassie," he said, his voice quiet and calm. "You will need your strength for my father's event tomorrow."
He walked past her toward the hall. As he passed, his sleeve lightly brushed against her shoulder, leaving a small trace of heat behind.
Cassie stood alone in the quiet kitchen, holding her phone tight while her heart beat fast in her chest. She stared at the empty doorway long after he walked away, asking herself softly:
"He said he would make my life terrible here. So why does he suddenly care ".
The heavy double doors of the private study clicked shut behind them, cutting off the vast, dark hallway of the estate. The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a single brass desk lamp, casting long shadows across the floorboards.Alex let go of her wrist, walking straight toward his desk. He pulled out her phone, staring at the dark screen with a lethal focus that made the room feel tight and airless."Alex, please," Cassie gasped, her voice shaking violently as she stepped closer to the desk. "You do not understand what you are doing. I need to handle this on my own. If my mother finds out about this, it will destroy her. She barely survived him the first time. I would rather deal with his threats every day for the rest of my life than let him ruin her peace here.""You are not handling anything on your own," Alex said, his voice flat and stern. "You are being hunted by a criminal, Cassie.""It is my mess!" she cried out, her chest heaving as tears finally spilled over her eye
Cassie pressed her back against the wooden back of the chair, her chest rising and falling in short, uneven breaths. She quickly brought her hands up to her face, using her long sleeves to scrub the wetness from her cheeks and under her eyes. She hated being caught like this. She hated feeling small, weak, and exposed, especially in front of him."I thought everyone was asleep," Cassie said, her voice rough and unsteady. She forced herself to stand up from the table, smoothing down her sweater and keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the dark floorboards between them. "I was just about to head upstairs."She tried to brush past him, taking a wide step toward the arched exit. But Alex moved with effortless, terrifying speed. He stepped directly into her path, his broad frame blocking the moonlight spilling from the hallway and casting a long shadow over her."Do not bother lying to me, Cassie," Alex said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble in the quiet room.Cassie stopped in her tracks, ref
Cassie woke up to a soft, rhythmic knock on her heavy bedroom door, the muffled sound pulling her out of a dark, dreamless sleep. She sat up slowly on the edge of the mattress, her body feeling heavy and exhausted. She had spent the entire late afternoon curled up in the dark, crying until her head throbbed and her eyes burned."Miss Cassie?" the polite voice of the estate chef called out from the hallway. "Dinner is served in the main dining room.""Thank you, I will be right down," Cassie called back, her voice sounding raspy and weak even to her own ears. She waited until the chef's footsteps faded down the hall before pulling herself up from the bed. She walked into the adjacent bathroom and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her face was pale, her nose was slightly pink, and dark shadows rested under her eyes. She splashed icy water over her face three times, pressing a cool towel against her skin to reduce the swelling. She combed through her hair, pulled on a simple long s
Cassie broke eye contact instantly, dropping her gaze back down to her glass as her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She felt completely exposed, sitting there in the warm afternoon light with her deepest denial crumbling apart. She tried to take a slow breath, forcing her shoulders to stay relaxed so no one at the table would notice the storm crashing inside her chest.Across the low glass table, Liam set his drink down with a loud clatter and leaned back against the wicker sofa cushions. A lazy grin spread across his face as he looked over at Alex, who was still sitting rigid and brooding in his chair."Look at him, Celeste," Liam said with a light chuckle, shaking his head. "The man looks like he is attending a high stakes business meeting instead of enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. I do not think I have seen him crack a real smile all week."Celeste giggled softly, leaning her weight against Alex's arm and resting her cheek right against his shoulder. Her long nails ligh
Morning sunlight poured into Cassie's guest room, pulling her out of a restless sleep. She sat up on the edge of the mattress and ran a hand through her hair. The memory of Alex pressing her against the hallway wall the night before rushed right back into her mind, making her pulse jump. She shook her head and pushed the thought away. Since she was currently on a school break with two years left before she finally graduated, she refused to sit around and waste her time. She stood up, opened her laptop, and laid out her sketchbooks on the small wooden desk by the window. If Alex wanted to play games and act like a ghost, she could focus entirely on her fashion designs and keep her mind occupied. The quiet stillness of the house broke when footsteps echoed down the hall. Cassie decided to head downstairs to grab a cup of coffee and clear her head. She walked into the bright and airy dining room where Veronica and Garrett sat together over morning coffee, talking quietly about upcoming p
Cassie stepped back inside the brightly lit ballroom, taking a slow breath to calm her nerves. The cold air of the terrace was still fresh on her skin, but she smoothed down her dress and kept her head up. She found her mother standing near Garrett, talking to a small group of investors.Veronica looked over, her face softening when she saw her daughter. "There you are, sweetie. Are you doing okay?""I am fine, Mom," Cassie said, giving a reassuring smile. "Just needed a minute to catch my breath."Garrett checked his watch and gave a warm nod. "It has been a long night, but a good one. I think it is time we head back."As they moved toward the front doors of the hotel, Alex rejoined the group. He walked with a quiet confidence, his dark suit making him stand out in the crowded lobby. His face was a cold mask, but when his eyes landed on Cassie, the heavy look in his eyes told her everything. The moment on the terrace was far from forgotten.Outside, the valets held open the doors to
