LOGINDarius stared at me as if he couldn’t believe what I had just done. I pushed him to sit on the edge of the bed. His back was slightly against the headboard, with both hands bound behind him. The position left him unable to push me away, but I could see the anger in his face.
I looked away, not knowing what to do next. My heart raced. I had never been with a male before, and now I had to do something I had only heard about and never experienced for myself. I took a slow breath and reached for the edge of my fur skirt. My fingers hesitated before I lifted it slightly. Darius’s eyes followed my movement. The moment he understood what I was about to do, his expression changed. “Ayla,” he warned. I ignored him. I stepped closer, placed my hands on his shoulders for balance, and slowly sat on his lap. His body went rigid beneath me. “What do you think you’re doing?” he demanded. I swallowed and looked at him. “I’m only following orders.” He taunted me for daring to force myself on him when I knew nothing about sex. “You don’t even know what you’re doing,” he said, his voice filled with mockery. “You’re going to regret this.” “I didn’t ask for your opinion.” I ignored him totally and tried to remember everything I had seen and heard from other wolves. I inserted my hands and reached under his trousers. His was larger and stronger than I expected. I breathed slowly and gently sat on his lap, but pain shot through me, making me stop. I gripped his shoulders harder and breathed through it. Darius watched my face. “Wait, you’re a virgin, aren’t you?” he asked. I glared at him but said nothing. “So you really decided your first time should be with a prisoner?” His lips curled into a mocking smile. “You’re either incredibly bold or completely foolish.” “Keep talking,” I snapped. “It won’t change my mind.” He shook his head, clearly amused by my stubbornness. “You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into.” “I said shut up.” I ignored everything he was saying and tried to remember how other wolves moved together and imitate them. I moved back and forth, slowly at first, and then I heard a muffled groan from him. “Hnn…” he groaned, unexpectedly. I kept moving, following his reaction. After a while, the pain slowly faded, replaced by a feeling I had never experienced before. I felt the first trace of pleasure and wondered if this wasn’t so bad after all. I went slowly at first, then faster, and I couldn’t help but moan. “Hmmm…” I breathed, closing my eyes. “Ahh… ahh…” I moaned again. Maybe this wasn’t so bad, I thought. I kept moving in the same rhythm, bouncing on Darius. His breathing grew faster, and he lowered his head toward my neck. Before I could ask what he was doing, I felt his teeth against my skin. A sharp sting passed through me. I could tell Darius was close, and I even enjoyed it at that moment, because it felt as if everything was finally right. “Ohh, yeah… ohh, yeah… ahh…” I moaned loudly, holding onto him. Eventually, heat rushed through my body, and the tight frown between Darius’s brows finally eased. When it was over, I got off his lap and quickly pulled my fur skirt back into place. I instinctively touched my neck, and I found the small, tender mark he had left behind. I stared at it for a moment. “That should be enough,” I murmured to myself before leaving Darius there without cleaning him up or untying him. I just left the room. Darius’s POV I stared at her as she climbed off my lap. That was it? After everything that had just happened, she just adjusted her fur skirt and turned away as if nothing had happened. “Ayla.” She stopped but didn’t turn around. “You’re leaving?” She glanced over her shoulder. “Yes.” I stared at her in disbelief. She had followed the King’s orders, done what she came here to do, and now she was leaving. She didn’t even seem bothered by it. I looked down at my bound hands and felt anger rise again. After everything that had happened, she acted as if it meant nothing. “Damn you,” I muttered. She ignored me and walked out. The moment the door closed behind her, anger rushed through me. I hated this place. I hated the Northern wolves. I hated the King for treating me like nothing more than a tool he could use, and now I hated myself most of all because, for a moment, I had forgotten where I was. My body had reacted to her. I had enjoyed parts of what happened, even though every part of me wanted to resist her and everything she represented. That realization made my hands curl into fists. How could I have enjoyed anything with a Northern woman? I had spent weeks refusing to break. They had beaten me, tortured me, and tried to force me to surrender, but I had never given them what they wanted. Yet tonight, they had found a way to get under my skin. I lowered my head and forced myself to think clearly. Ayla wasn’t the real problem. The Alpha King was, and if the King believed his plan had finally worked, then perhaps I could use that against him. For the past month, I had tried every way I could think of to escape. Nothing had worked. The Northern wolves had taken my warriors too, and I still didn’t know if they were alive. That was what mattered. I could endure the humiliation and the pain, but what I couldn’t endure was not knowing what had happened to my men. If they thought I had finally given in, they would stop watching me so closely. I might get my restraints removed. They could even let me move around the camp. That was all I needed. Eventually, they would make a mistake and give me a chance to get close to my warriors. When that happened, I would strike. I took a slow breath. They could believe they had broken me. The Alpha King could think his plan had succeeded, and I would play the obedient prisoner if that were what it took. For now, I would give them exactly what they wanted to see. Submission. But the moment they gave me an opening, I would use it to get my men back and find a way home.Ayla’s PovThe Eastern wolves came for the first time on the third day. It wasn't a real attack. I was walking beside the wagons in the early afternoon when a horn went off at the back of the line, one long blast, and then I heard shouting. Warriors ran past me toward the rear. A few seconds later, an arrow thudded into the side of a wagon not far from my head.⠀"Get down, miss!" the old warrior said, grabbing my arm.⠀"Where are they?" I asked.⠀"The ridge, behind us."⠀I crouched behind the wheel and watched. It was over almost as quickly as it had started. A handful of riders came down the slope, loosed a volley of arrows, and wheeled away before the Northern warriors could reach them. They hit two of our men. One of them fell off his horse. By the time the line had formed, the Eastern riders had vanished over the ridge.⠀"That's all?" I asked.⠀"That's all," the old warrior said. He let go of my arm. "They'll be back."⠀He was right. They came again that night, at the edge
Ayla’s PovNobody said anything for a long time. Darius stood in the doorway of the tent, and I sat on the blankets with the cup in my hands. The lamp hissed on its hook.⠀"You should lie down," he said at last.⠀"I will," I said.⠀"The healer left something for the bruise. It's by your feet."⠀"Yeah, I know, I saw it."⠀"Okay." He looked at the old warrior. "Stay here tonight. I'll sleep outside."⠀"You don't have to do that," I said.⠀"I know." He didn't say anything else. He gave me one more look, short and hard to read, and then he stepped back out into the cold. The flap fell shut behind him.⠀I sat there thinking about what Darius had said. “Ayla is my woman.” He had said it in front of the whole camp, where everyone could hear him. I kept remembering those words. He had sounded so sure of himself, as if he didn’t even need to think before saying them. Then he told the old warrior he would sleep outside. He acted as if nothing had happened, but I couldn’t stop thinking a
Darius’s PovMagnar kept looking at me, and I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. After a moment, he gave me a small nod. I remembered that same look from the day I first took command in the valley. He didn’t say anything, but I understood. He still didn’t trust me completely, but at least he knew I wasn’t going to let Haldor hurt Ayla again.⠀I turned and saw Ayla. She sat on the crate with a blanket around her shoulders. The old warrior stood beside her. She had stopped crying, but her face remained pale, and a bruise had begun to form on her throat. She looked straight at me, her lips parted and her eyes wide. I had never spoken about her that way before, not even once. I’d always told her it was about the child and only practical. I could see the questions on her face. Until now, she’d believed me. After what I’d said in front of everyone, I wasn’t sure she believed me anymore. I didn't say anything, and I wasn't ready to.⠀"Take her to my tent," I told the old warrior. "Get her
Darius’s Pov They made the ring on a flat patch of ground beside the wagons, packing the snow down with their boots. Men formed a wall around it, three deep. Someone brought two plain swords, heavy ones, the kind the Northerners carried. I took one and tested it. My shoulder pulled where the old cut had never fully healed. ⠀ I hadn't slept in two nights. I had ridden to the narrows and back. I had fought a dozen Eastern riders before breakfast. My arms felt weak, and my legs were stiff with cold. I knew it. Haldor knew it too. I could see it in the way he rolled his shoulders and stepped into the ring, loose and easy, like a man who had just woken from a good night's sleep. ⠀ I took off my cloak and gloves and stood across from him. ⠀ "Begin," said the man with the gray braid. ⠀ Haldor came at me at once. He was fast. I had known he would be strong, but I hadn't expected him to move so quickly for his size. His first cut came down from above. I got my blade up in tim
Darius’s PovThe crowd opened. The man with the gray braid came through at a fast walk, with the sharp-faced commander behind him. He was broad and stern, and the warriors made room for him without being asked. He stopped at the edge of the ring and looked from Haldor's bloody face to me, and then at the overturned barrel and the broken pole.⠀"Somebody tell me," he said. "Now."⠀Nobody spoke at first. Then the young warrior with the split lip stepped forward.⠀"The commander found Haldor with the girl," he said. "He was holding her against the wagon. She was screaming. We heard it from the cook fires."⠀"That's not what happened," Haldor said.⠀"Her throat is marked," said the woman by the front. "I saw it and her cloak's torn."⠀The man with the gray braid looked at me. "Is that true, Commander?"⠀"I came around the wagon and saw it myself," I said. "I didn't hear anything but Ayla calling out. Then I saw his hands."⠀"She belonged to me," Haldor said hoarsely. "Everyone
Darius’s PovI didn’t remember crossing the distance between us. One moment, I was standing beside the wagon. The next, my fist slammed into Haldor’s chest, sending him stumbling backward into the side of the wagon. Before he could recover, I grabbed the front of his cloak and punched him in the face. He went down on one knee. I pulled him up and hit him again.⠀“Wait…” Haldor spat blood and raised an arm. “Wait, Commander, wait…”I ignored him. My fist struck his ribs, followed by a punch to the jaw. He staggered sideways across the wet snow and fell. I stood over him, breathing hard. Behind me, boots pounded against the ground as voices called out to one another. Ayla’s scream had drawn the entire camp.⠀"Get up," I said.⠀"You're mad," Haldor said. He scrambled back on his elbows, wiping his mouth. "You're out of your mind. Look at me. I only wanted to talk to her."⠀"With your hands on her throat?"⠀"She's mine!" He said it loudly enough for the crowd to hear. "She was promis
