Third Party POV

Mira stood frozen, her breath trapped in her throat. Her lips parted to mouth Kairos's name, but nothing came out. The world shifted, and her feet stumbled backward.

No…

The pain was crushing, a betrayal so sharp it took the air out of her lungs. Her Kairos. She had loved him since she could remember. The mer with salt in his hair and wildness in his eyes; the mer who made her heart race before she even understood what a heart could feel.

She used to follow him through the reefs, watching how the light caught in his hair when he surfaced. He was constantly just ahead of her, swimming faster and laughing louder. But Mira had never minded trailing behind. She thought maybe, one day, he’d look back and reach for her hand.

And sometimes he did. In brief moments, he smiled just for her. He would sit with her on the rocks and listen to her talk about nothing. Sometimes it was perfect and she would even sing for him. But such moments were fleeting.

Despite this, she continued

Lake's POV I came to a stop just outside the tree line in front of Kairos's house, not wanting to go any closer. The house was a little deeper in, tucked behind the trees.Leaning forward against the steering wheel, I sighed, hoping Kairos had listened and passed out inside the house. It was late, past 2 a.m., and my body felt like it had been through a washing machine and back.I was still eager to see him. But I was exhausted, and if he had already fallen asleep, I would simply turn the car around and leave him a message for the morning.I reached for my phone to call him, and it did not even ring. Kairos picked up almost instantly, and his voice slurred as he said, “Come inside…” to which I let out a short, dry laugh. Of course, he would say that. Clearly, the alcohol was still talking. He knew it would be a bad idea for me to come inside. Plus, I would never do that to his Luxncée.“I’m not coming in. You have to come out. I’m parked by the trees.”There was a pause, then he mumb

Lake's POV The soft click of the hospital room door opening startled me awake, and I blinked, disoriented for a brief moment before realizing where I was. I had fallen asleep in Alec's hospital room. With the cushions below moaning, I sat up and rubbed the back of my neck. My body ached from the awkward position I had been in as I looked over at Alec, who was still unconscious in the bed.Lux had been with me for some time, sitting quietly by Alec's side and holding his hand. But eventually, I told her to go back to the dorm and sleep. She looked exhausted.Standing up, I stretched the stiffness in my legs, and then I noticed movement: someone appeared in front of me, and I froze."Uncle Sr." Yes, it was strange to call him that, but I had been doing so since I was a boy, and it had a nice ring to it, despite the strangeness. I exhaled as his familiar figure walked through, his eyes filled with concern.I had not expected him until the morning, and I was still processing his arrival

Lake's POV Lux's eyes widened as the question left my lips. She stumbled forward a few steps before looking away, her jaw trembling as if she was trying to hold something in.But I didn’t look away. I kept my gaze on her, waiting for a response. The doctor's voice as he sang of Alec's injuries played over and over in my head, and I needed to understand this madness."I did not intend for Reed to come after Alec," she said, her words tripping over themselves. “I only told him Alec knew about us because… because I wanted him to understand how much I love him. I wanted to show him that….” She couldn’t finish and my heart stuttered in my chest. So it was her. She was the cause of this incident.Lux’s voice cracked as she apologized again, tears spilling from her lashes, but I couldn’t let her finish. “You wanted to show him what? That you chose him?”"Lake-" she started, but I interrupted, saying she had not chosen, though had she? "Just the other day you told me you loved them both," I

Kairos's POV My mother looked up from the herbs she was stringing together when she saw me pacing. “What’s wrong?” she asked, eyes narrowing with concern."It is Reed," I said already halfway down the hall. “Something happened to him. I need to go to him. I’ll be back.”But that motherly expression screamed, "Are you telling me the truth or do you just want to get out of here?" It made me pause and I returned my attention to her.“I will be back,” I promised. “Lux was crying and I’m worried about Reed. I want to see that he’s okay. I’ll come back and spend time with Mira as I promised.” She nodded slowly, the worry still on her face, but she gave me a silent blessing.I hurried to my room and began changing, yanking my damp shirt off and grabbing my jeans. After Mom and I talked and I told her I did not love Mira, she tried to talk me out of it, so she made me promise to spend time with Mira and give us another chance.I said I would, despite knowing it would not work. But I had to t

Lux's POVMy heart sank the moment I said the words that Alec knew. "Wait, Reed. I did not mean it that way-" I reached for him, panic rising. "I was just trying to express how much I love you. I didn’t mean to say that... I shouldn’t have said that.” But he was not listening. He turned away from me, taking long, heavy strides towards the door."Reed, wait!" My hand grasped the back of his shirt as I chased after him. But he shrugged me off without saying anything, and I scrambled before him, attempting to block the exit. “Please,” I breathed, my arms out. “Just listen to me.” He paused, and for a brief moment, I thought he would listen. But then he just looked at me and I froze because this time I was sure his eyes gleamed with something that seemed unreal. A chill ran through my veins as I stumbled back, and he brushed past me."Reed…" I whispered before pursuing him again. He did not take the elevator. Instead, he turned to the stairs. "Reed!" I called out louder, hurrying after hi
