"Are you trying to starve me just to save a little money? Are you hoping I'll die so you can inherit my inheritance and spend it however you want?"

My mother-in-law, Ruth Jennings, roared at me with tears brimming in her eyes.

At the sight of the half-eaten greasy dishes on the table, my chest tightened with anger.

I was about to remind her of her high blood pressure when my sister-in-law, Esmerelda Black, suddenly stepped in front of me. She explained, "I know you don't want me to treat Mom to a nice meal. She's my mother, though.

"Clara, you're just her daughter-in-law, so you won't understand how much it hurts to see Mom go hungry."

Ruth shot me a glare. "Since you hate me so much, go back to your own family. I'd still like to live a few more years!"

'Even if I told Clara that I came to accompany Esmerelda that day and hadn't taken a single bite of the unhealthy food, she'd never believe me. I wasn't her real mother, so she always took things out on me without even knowing the truth.'

I froze, watching as Ruth packed up her things. Her mouth never moved, but I heard her words clearly.

That was when I realized what was really going on that day.

...

That day was Ruth's 70th birthday. I had recorded a video of birthday wishes from her loved ones, invited her old friends over, cooked a table full of food, and even made a birthday cake. I'd also told Esmerelda in advance, hoping to give Ruth a surprise.

Instead, Esmerelda said she wanted company. She called Ruth over, and stood me and Ruth's friends up on purpose. Then, at her place, she ordered a bunch of unhealthy food, and urged Ruth to eat.

Ruth had passed out several times in the past due to high blood pressure, and the doctor had warned her to avoid salty and oily food. However, Esmerelda had ignored the warnings.

She even switched off Ruth's phone so I couldn't find them. I searched all day, and left with no choice, I finally called the police. That was how I tracked them down.

I had always treated Ruth like my own mother. I was only strict with her because I cared about her. However, when I lost my temper in public and scolded her, it humiliated her. After that, she stopped coming around for months.

From then on, Ruth didn't actually kick me out but grew more hostile toward me. Whenever we had a little disagreement, she'd paint me as selfish, cruel, and eager for her inheritance.

On top of that, she continued feasting on rich, greasy food every day until she had a stroke and couldn't be saved.

And me? The day after Ruth died, Esmerelda sold me off to North Maldia, where I was tortured to death.

Only while I was on my deathbed did Esmerelda proudly tell me that she could hear Ruth's inner thoughts. That was when I realized there had been such a huge misunderstanding between Ruth and me.

After my husband, Ethan, died on duty, I refused to remarry and insisted on having our posthumous child. Deeply moved by this, Ruth gave me their family heirloom bracelet, put me in charge of the family business, and repeatedly promised that I would inherit most of the assets after she died.

I also felt for Ruth, losing her son so late in life. I cared for her, attending to her meals, daily needs, and rest. Sometimes, I was even a little strict with her.

I thought she knew I was doing it for her good. I didn't know she had long grown resentful of my rules.

On top of that, Esmerelda was always whispering in Ruth's ear, pretending to stand up for her, but actually twisting my good intentions. She fed Ruth lies, making me look like the bad guy.

She would inherit everything once Ruth fully despised me. For money, Esmerelda would even scheme against her own mother without hesitation. What a "good" daughter she was.

I came back to my senses and looked coldly at Esmerelda. If I had another chance, I would tear that fake smile off her face with my own hands.

Ruth, impatient, snapped, "Why are you still here? Are you still trying to cause trouble with Esme? Don't cross the line!"

I sighed helplessly.

"Clara, is what Esme said true?""Of course, it's true. She's always been working on this project. Nobody was allowed to even look. She must've stolen their work," Esmerelda replied instead. However, Ruth ignored her and spoke to me calmly. "Clara, I know you're not that kind of person. Still, if there's a leak before the contest and we don't find out, they'll accuse us of plagiarism."I smiled and slowly turned to Esmerelda. "Do you have proof?""Yes." Clearly, Esmerelda had come prepared. She shot me a smug look, pulled out her phone, and hit play on a video. "I thought your late nights were suspicious, so I checked. Who knew there'd be a surprise waiting for me?"Ruth took the phone, skeptical at first. Then, her eyes widened. The clip showed me talking with a man, the rival company's designer. The video had no sound, but the scene of me talking to the rival already looked bad.Ruth looked at me, shocked. "Clara, would you like to explain yourself?"Esmerelda grinned triump

Ruth didn't disturb me. Instead, she quietly grabbed an umbrella and slipped outside.I shook my head helplessly. Clearly, Ruth still couldn't harden her heart. I threw on a jacket and followed behind.Downstairs, Esmerelda was huddled on the edge of the flowerbed, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. Ruth's eyes turned red. She tossed the umbrella into Esmerelda's lap, her voice icy. "I told you I don't want to see you. Leave, now!"Esmerelda had already seen through Ruth's heart. Sobbing, she threw herself into Ruth's arms. "Mom, I've missed you so much. I didn't dare come here because I was afraid you'd be angry. But you're my mom. How could I stay away forever? "I know I was wrong. I won't make excuses. I just want your forgiveness." With that, Esmerelda begged and punished herself. "I'm sorry. It's all my fault."The slap was merciless, and her cheek swelled instantly. Ruth hurriedly bent down, clutching her and crying in pain. However, over Ruth's shoulder, Esmerel

Ruth repeatedly played the recording. Each time, Esmerelda's voice filled the air again. The hospital room was eerily silent, except for the recording playing on repeat.Minutes dragged by until, all of a sudden, Ruth hurled the phone against the wall. She then turned her cold eyes on Esmerelda. "Do you have anything left to say?"Esmerelda frantically shook her head. This time, her tears were real. "Mom, I was wrong. I was joking. I didn't think Clara would take it seriously… I really didn't mean it…""You've said those words too many times," Ruth whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks. "So, you stirred up all the fights between Clara and me. I don't understand. What do you get out of this? How could you plot against your own mother?"Esmerelda just kept crying, but Ruth no longer spared her even a glance. She turned her back and closed her eyes, saying, "Leave. Go home. Don't ever show your face to me again."Esmerelda tried to argue, but I was already on the phone calling

I sat on a bench in the hospital waiting room, anxiously waiting. Esmerelda sat a short distance away, scrolling on her phone. She sneered, "You can cut the act now. Nobody's watching."Just then, the lights in the emergency room went out. Esmerelda lit up like she had just hit the jackpot. However, when she saw Ruth lying on the bed with flushed cheeks, looking healthy, her smile vanished. She muttered, "That old woman sure is tough."I ignored her and focused on Ruth. As night fell, she slowly regained consciousness.Relief washed over me. As I approached to check on her, I was suddenly shoved aside. Esmerelda lunged to the bedside and grabbed Ruth's hand, sobbing dramatically. "Mom, you scared me to death! What would I do if you'd died?"Her panicked antics were completely different from just a few minutes earlier, when she had been hoping Ruth would die.Yet, this time, Ruth forced her hand free and signaled me over. Esmerelda looked at her in disbelief. "Mom, what's the

The room fell silent.Panic flickered across Esmerelda's face as she stammered, "I just came back from abroad. I'm jet-lagged and got things mixed up…"I let out a small laugh. "You've been back for three months. How are you still jet-lagged?"At this, Ruth's expression immediately soured. Esmerelda didn't even care about her own mother's life. What kind of daughter was she?Besides, since returning home, all Esmerelda had been doing was partying every day. How busy could she really be?Esmerelda didn't expect me to be so blunt. Her eyes reddened, and her voice turned hoarse. "Everyone's body is different. So what if it's been three months?"She continued through sobs, "I quit my job and flew back all this way just to be with Mom! Isn't that enough devotion? I just got a little mixed up. Do you have to be so harsh?"She cried softly, looking extremely wounded. Ruth instantly softened and tried to smooth things over. "I heard Aldorian time is different, so jet lag and confusion c

The reason I wanted Ruth to come out with me was to see a cardiac surgeon. Her high blood pressure had already led to complications—a heart attack. Only a complex bypass surgery could effectively relieve her symptoms. It had taken me a lot of effort to secure an appointment with this doctor, who had a flawless surgical record. I had even told Esmerelda about it, telling her not to let Ruth get into any nonsense these few days.Yet, Esmerelda urged Ruth, "Mrs. Prichett asked me yesterday if Clara was mistreating you. No matter how I explained, she wouldn't believe me. She even said if this goes on, you'll be driven to your death!"With how nosy she is, she might even call the police on Clara. Why not just go this time and clear things up for Clara?"I heard Ruth say inwardly, 'Clara's such a good daughter-in-law. How can the police take her away? I'll just go this time, then. When I come back, I'll apologize to Clara.'A moment later, Ruth looked regretful. "Maybe I should tell Cl
