MasukBECCA’S POV
"Let's go partyyyyy," the girls sang as they approached me at school the next day.
As I watched Beatrice wiggle her ass in my face, I forced a fake smile on my face. Everyone was chatting about the party and what they wanted to wear, which livened up the school.
Some were even planning on slipping out during lunch to acquire clothing since they couldn't wait for the day to be over.
"We're dressing at my place, so meet us at my house by 5 p.m.,"Pearl said, her commanding voice rising.
"With a phony smile, I answered, "Of course." Who does she think she's kidding? I'm not getting dressed up with them. When I come up in my gown later tonight, they will be astonished.
"Good," she said as she walked by me, followed by her two escorts.
After they went, I sighed and rolled my eyes. I was on my way to class when I noticed the geek girl I had blown off the day before.
She frowned at me and hurriedly bowed her head before deciding to flee through a side door. "Don't move, I already saw you," I said as she took a step forward.
""What do you want?" I inquired. "No.....no...not...nothing," she stammered,
"But I do want something." I said my voice rising in intimidation.
"Wh….what?"
"I want to know why Cole will stand up for someone like you,"
I said angrily as I hovered above her like a vampire preparing to seize a human.
"It's because.....we're friends?" She stuttered.
"Why would he be a friend of yours?" I snickered.
That seemed to enrage her, as she glared angrily at me.
"Because I am human, and Cole sees me for who I am: intelligent and pleasant! Unlike you blind girls who don't value friendship and instead regard men as a source of social capital!"
I was surprised since I had not expected her to say that.
A Queen Bee, however, is always prepared for anything.
"I bet you felt fantastic after that little outburst," I remarked, smiling. I could see her bewilderment and surprise on her face.
"Let me tell you something: that outburst was nothing compared to what I've seen from better and more brilliant nerds. I'm warning you to stay away from Cole, because if you don't,you won't like what happens to you.”
I hit her with my shoulder, and she fell to the ground. Nerds spend their days reading books and forget to look after the most vital aspect! That dumb brain of theirs is not their body!
I chuckled as I walked to class, remembering to step on her book as I went. That felt great, I thought, and I smiled for the first time that day.
The closing bell rang, and classes finished as usual. I drove into town to pick up some of my finished party makeup. I noticed Cole talking with a man as I was ready to walk inside a makeup store. His curly hair almost covering his face and his height threatening to plunge him into the clouds.
It did look cute on him, I must say. Cole's shirt was clinging to his chest when I looked at him. I made a mental note that this guy liked his garments to be tight.
"Hey Cole," I said, swearing I could see the scowl on his face as he looked at me.
To be safe, I decided to ask him if he was a wolf. I know it's ridiculous, but I didn't want my spell to fail. I stepped closer to him and smiled at the guy next to him, who was sipping his juice and looking at me with interest.
"Are you a werewolf?" I inquired— a smile on my face, à as I questioned him.
The man next to him spat up the juice and sprayed it all over my face. I was irritated! Bad first impression!
COLE'S POV
As my wolf warned, I could sense that terrible girl approaching closer to me. "Are you a werewolf?" She inquired.
Why would she ask such a question, and who the hell is this girl? I was taken aback.
"Of course not," I said quickly.
"Wow, that was quick," she said softly. "Anyhow, I was thinking the same thing, lucky you," she continued.
I was taken aback. Was it because I spent so much time in her neighborhood? Is she aware of my true identity? I seriously doubted it.
To fetch a drink, or rather, to get away from her, I left her standing with my friend Skye, who was already smiling
lustfully at her.
SKYE'S POV
I knew I had to make her my girlfriend as soon as I saw her.
She was lovely, and the scowl on her face added to her cuteness. "Hello, my name is Skye Wonders," I said as I stretched my palms out.
"Wonders?" she exclaimed. "As in Mrs. Wonder's son?" she asked.
"Yes, as in Mrs. Wonder's son," I responded.
I dislike it when people link me to my mother; she is weird, and her antique business has made everyone scared of her. "Do you attend Crestfall High School?" I probed.
"Obviously," she grumbled.
"Where is Cole?" she inquired, a smile on her lips as she looked about.
He went to fetch something, and I'll be at Crestfall High on Monday, so I'm hoping you'll be friendlier to me then," I said, smiling.
She glared and murmured, "first terrible impression," before turning away and leaving me standing. Cole appeared a few seconds later, bringing an ice cream cup, as if on cue.
“Woof! He exclaimed, "She's gone."
"What makes you dislike her?" I inquired.
"I just don't," he remarked after a long glance at me. "She is too possessive."
"Sexy, too," I added.
We talked in the park for a while before I went to the antique store. I grinned as I remembered the girl. I forgot to ask for her name, so I'll have to wait until Monday.
BECCA’S POV
Sam called me around 5 p.m. to remind me about the meeting. I assured her I'd be there if my mother didn't return. "Don'tbbring anything showy," Pearl warned me beneath. Who was she to tell me how to dress? I was irritated.
That was the moment I chose to wear it! Sexy and flashy. I smiled to myself as I imagined her expression when I stepped out of the car.
I was changing into a short white gown that clung to my hips pleasantly. It had a sleek feel and no arms.
I complimented it with gleaming red heels that matched my lipstick hue. My make-up was minimal, but the red contrast on my lips made me seem stunning. I gently stretched my hair across my hair straightener to curl it up, creating a curly, bouncy tip. My mother arrived quickly and entered my room.
"You look great, my baby has grown so much," she cried as she stood at my door, smiling.
"Your phony grin won't work on me," she told me as I smiled at her. "What happened today?" she questioned.
"I need to learn how to staple my magic before I murder someone else."
She gave me a remorseful expression, as if she realized it was her fault.
"How about after your party?" she enquired.
"Yes, mum!" I replied cheerfully.
"Come home fast; I'll be waiting for you," my mother spoke as she walked away from me. I inhaled deeply and examined myself in the mirror.
"Where are you, Miss?" Pearl’s voice crossed the airwaves as soon as I picked the cal, snapping me out of my self worship. It's almost 7 o'clock!”
"Sorry I couldn't dress up with you guys, family emergency,"I explained. "What are you wearing?" Pearl inquired.
"A gown," I replied as I disconnected the phone and picked up my silver bag, refusing to let her interrogate me.
I went to my mother's room, said my goodbyes, and drove to the party in my red-painted automobile.
SKYE'S POVThe hunger changes in the Margin.Back at Crestfall, it's been a constant low frequency — background noise, manageable, the kind of urgeI can push down and keep down if I stay focused. Here it's different. The Margin has its own pressure, and it presses on everything, and what it presses hardest on is whatever's already trying to break out of its box.I kept walking and kept my hands loose at my sides and didn't look too long at the pulse in Becca's throat. She's moving fast, the way she's been since the moment we entered the treeline, like urgency is the only thing holding her together and she knows it and has decided that's fine. I match her pace without difficulty, which is still strange to me. A week ago, keeping up with anything would have required actual effort. Now the effort is all internal, all pointed inward, all about not being what I'm capable of being."You've gone quiet," she said, not looking at me."I'm always quiet.""You're quieter than usual. Which is ala
BECCA'S POVThe forest had no stars. That was the first wrong thing I noticed. Not the trees with their bark the color of bruised plums, not the way the ground felt slightly too soft underfoot, like walking on the back of something sleeping. It was the sky — a low, woolen dark without a single point of light, pressing down on them like a held breath.I had been in bad places before. Last month she would have said the worst her blue walled room, trapped between my Mom’s boyfriend cheap cologne and her own forced solitude. Now I knew better. The worst was here."Sam!" My voice didn't carry right in this place. The word fell flat, absorbed by the dark between the trees like it had never existed at all. She tried again anyway
SKYE'S POVThe other me smiled like he knew a joke I hadn't figured out yet."So," Human Skye said, circling me the way a predator circles prey. Except he was the prey here. Smaller. Weaker. Breakable. "This is what I became. What you made me.""I didn't make anything." My voice came out wrong. Too rough. The fangs I couldn't retract anymore gave every word a slight lisp. "Becca's mother—""Did what you wanted." He stopped circling. Stood directly in front of me, close enough I could smell him. Blood. Warmth. Life. "Don't pretend you didn't want the power. The speed. The strength to protect her."
BECCA'S POV"What does it mean?" The words came out strangled. "The mark. The baby. My mother—what does it mean?"The Librarian was already turning away, walking back toward her desk like we'd just finished discussing the weather."Wait!" I scrambled to my feet, legs shaking. "You can't just—you have to tell me what I saw. You have to explain—""I don't have to do anything." The Librarian picked up her quill, dipped it in ink that looked too red. "I showed you what happened. What you do with that information is your concern, not mine.""That's not—you said this knowledge would help me close the doors. Save my town. But all you've shown me
BECCA'S POVThe world reformed with a lurch that made my stomach heave.I was back in Augustine's body, but everything was different now. Heavier. BECCA'S POVThe Librarian snapped her fingers. The world didn't fade or blur or dissolve. It simply stopped existing. One moment I was standing in the warm, golden glow of the Library of Lost Things, surrounded by my friends. The next, they were gone—vanished like they'd never been there at all."Wa
BECCA'S POVWe stood at the edge of the monolithic structure, staring at the reality-defying landscape before us, none of us daring to speak. The wind whispered through the golden grass in a language I didn't understand, and the mint-green trees swayed without leaves to rustle. Everything about this
