Chapter 1

Mom held out a slice of cake to me. She was still wearing the moonstone bracelet around her wrist.

I braced myself against the doorframe and pointed at it. "Turn it off first."

She looked down and finally seemed to remember what she was wearing. She lifted her fingers from the stone.

The tightness in my chest finally eased.

Moonstones were originally used to train pups to send distress signals. The wearer had to infuse the stone with their own energy for it to transmit a signal to their blood relatives.

My senses were unusually sensitive. Whenever I received one of those signals, my heart raced, and my whole body trembled.

Mom knew that, yet she still helped Leah test it again and again.

The moment I stepped inside, Leah turned her phone toward me. On the screen, I was stumbling through the front gate, nearly losing my balance as I rushed up the steps.

I heard my own voice asking, "Where's Mom?"

My younger sister, Leah Holmes, dragged the time bar back and replayed it. "This part is hilarious."

I hissed, "Delete it."

She glanced at me, but her thumb landed on the share button instead. A notification chimed from the family group chat.

Mom caught my hand before I could reach for the phone. "It's just our family looking at it. No one's going to make fun of you."

Leah leaned against her shoulder, still laughing.

Nolan Harding took the timer from Leah, brought over a chair, and gestured for me to sit. "Leah just wanted you to come home sooner. Your mom has been preparing for tonight for a long time."

"I told you I had negotiations tonight," I said.

"I remember." He picked up a napkin and wiped the rainwater from the back of my hand. "I'll drive you back after dinner."

My phone rang at that exact moment. My manager, Ella Reid, told me the client had already left. They had to catch the last flight out and didn't have time to hear another round of explanations.

I asked if we could reschedule the meeting online.

Ella replied, "They made it clear that they were reconsidering the partnership. Get the handover documents ready for me tomorrow."

The call ended.

Leah reached for a strawberry and said indifferently, "So you don't have to go back now, right? You can stay and finish dinner with us."

I stared at her. "Last night, you asked me what time their flight was."

She took a bite of the strawberry without looking up. "You chose to come home. It's not like I hung up on your work call for you."

I shot back, "You told me Mom was dying."

She set the strawberry back on the plate, her eyes turning red. "I'll apologize if that makes you happier. I'm sorry, okay?"

Dad pushed the cake closer to me. "She apologized. If they can't even understand a family emergency, maybe they weren't worth partnering with in the first place."

I looked at Mom, who was sitting beside him as if nothing had happened.

"But Mom isn't sick," I retorted.

"Isn't that a good thing?" Dad brushed it off and picked up his coffee.

Nolan offered to help me contact the other party, to which I responded, "No need."

He glanced at Leah, then lowered his voice as he tried to placate me. "She just wanted everyone to spend the holiday together. If it bothers you, I'll remind her not to do it again."

Nolan had made the same promise after the time my grandmother had supposedly felt her wolf vanishing and was falling into a coma. He'd promised it wouldn't happen again.

But his promises had come and gone so many times that they no longer held any worth. They were like bubbles that popped and dissipated when a gust of wind blew past.

I left the cake untouched, went upstairs, and opened my laptop. I clicked an email that had sat unanswered in my inbox for two weeks.

The West Coast branch was hiring a rescue training coordinator. The position required a three-year transfer, with a report date just three days away.

Mom had previously said that the distance would weaken the blood telepathy. Nolan had said our mate bond ceremony was approaching and that he wanted me to stay.

Regardless, I filled out the confirmation form and hit "Send". Then, I opened my chat with the priest and canceled the ceremony I'd scheduled for next month.

Nolan and I weren't fated mates, and we hadn't undergone marking. Next month, I was supposed to let him bite the back of my neck to mark me.

But now, I turned off the ceremony reminder.

Mom learned about my schedule from my email and asked if we could have a meal together.I agreed, but told her I only had an hour. After dinner, I needed to return to the hotel to prepare for the next day's training session. My family arrived at the restaurant early.Grandma was there, too. When she saw me, she opened her arms and hesitated before asking if we could hug.I walked over and hugged her gently. Her hands were trembling.Once we sat down, she didn't ask when I was coming home. Instead, she brought up the incident when her wolf was supposedly on the brink of vanishing."Your dad asked if I'd be willing to play along, and I agreed." She gripped her napkin tightly. "I knew you had an assessment coming up. I thought missing one work opportunity wouldn't matter, and Leah was so happy for once."No one at the table said a word.I looked at her, remembering how I'd rushed into the clinic that day and grabbed her hand, asking if she was in pain. She'd smiled and patted my h

Leah emailed me, demanding that I stop making our parents explain themselves to everyone. he said her friends now asked her about those videos whenever they saw her. Even the people who'd promised to go on a trip with her had stopped inviting her.She asked, displeased, "Are you only going to be satisfied when everyone thinks I'm a terrible person?"I replied that I didn't make up the facts. After receiving my message, she called me several times, but I didn't answer. On the third day, she asked Mom to video-call me. Mom told me she wanted to say a few things and asked if I was willing to listen.I said yes.Leah started crying as soon as she opened her mouth. "I already sent the clarification email to your employer, and I deleted the videos. What else do you want me to do?"I said, "Stop contacting my employer, and stop recording videos of family members pretending to be injured just to get me to come home.""I just wanted you to come back.""I already told you I wasn't comi

Dad slipped in the garage and fractured his ankle.Mom had accompanied Grandma to a follow-up appointment, so only Leah was home. By the time she managed to contact me, Dad had already been taken to the clinic. She sent me the healer's number along with the examination results and asked if I could spare a moment for a call. After reviewing the documents, I stepped outside the office to make a video call.Dad was lying on an observation bed with a brace on his leg. He looked very upset."Did you really not feel a thing?" he asked.I shook my head.He stared at me for several seconds, as if he was just beginning to really understand what severing the connection meant. He said, "I was lying on the floor calling for you. I called several times."I tightened my grip on my phone. "What did the healer say?"Mom answered for him, explaining that there were no other injuries. His ankle had been set, and he'd need to rest for a while. He wouldn't be able to shift into wolf form for a w

I told Mom I wanted the cardboard box at the bottom of my closet. She asked if I wanted her to send the documents inside along with everything else.I said yes and reminded her that there was also a training log at the very bottom.A while later, she called me. "You got up at 5:00 am every day to train?"I was checking the list of new trainees and paused for a moment before realizing she was talking about the competition."I trained for two hours before work," I said."For how long?""Eight months."Mom didn't respond right away.I heard the sound of pages turning. The last entry in the training log was marked "Finals". Beside it was the departure time Nolan had helped me confirm. Everything after that was blank."Your father came home that day and said you were the fastest runner." Mom's voice was quiet. "He said you'd even given up the competition because family mattered more than anything else."I stopped typing. "I thought he was going to die."A soft thud came from the

Nolan contacted me ahead of time and asked to meet at a coffee shop after work. He said he only needed half an hour.I agreed. When we met, he brought the scarf and medication I'd left at home. At the bottom of the bag was a key."You left in such a hurry," he said.I took out the scarf and pushed the key back toward him. "I don't need this."He didn't take it back. Instead, he apologized first and agreed that Leah shouldn't have contacted my employer.Nolan said, "I've told her not to interfere in your affairs again."I countered, "How many times has she heard that already?" Nolan lowered his head. He looked more worn out than before, and his shirt collar was wrinkled."Erin, we could move out."After a slight pause, he continued, "We could live farther away from your parents. If you want to work here, I'll arrange my schedule so I can visit. We don't have to be apart."I pulled out my phone and opened the screenshot of the competition schedule. "You chose this particula

Leah had attached a photo of me taking medication at the clinic, along with screenshots of a few messages where I'd mentioned severing my blood telepathy with the family. She'd asked my employer to put my transfer on hold until my family came to get me.She ended her email with a glaring line. "Erin isn't listening to anyone right now. Please don't do anything that might upset her further."I stared at the photo for a while. So she'd been hiding behind the blanket and taking pictures of me without my knowledge that day. I never expected her to have captured that scene.Colin didn't rush to any conclusions. "Your transfer is done according to the proper procedures. What we need to verify is whether you require any medical support."I contacted my healer and asked him to provide a written statement. In reality, the medication was meant to relieve the heart palpitations caused by the blood telepathy. It had nothing to do with the condition Leah implied I had.The examination I'd u
