Chapter 1

Kapitel 1~ Der Segen

As I looked at the mountain of papers scattered across my desk, I sighed.

My God, I really had a lot to do.

My head started spinning. It was probably because I'd been staring at the same documents for hours.

"Hey, are you ready for a break?"

Liam stuck his head through the door of my office.

Liam was practically my best friend at work. We ate together, talked constantly, and spent a lot of time together – especially before I married Adrian.

“I can’t,” I said without looking up. “I still have so much work to do.”

"But your head is still spinning."

I frowned and finally looked at him.

"How do you know that?"

"Because you've been rubbing your temples for the last twenty minutes."

I rolled my eyes.

"You pay far too much attention to me."

"Someone has to do it."

He entered the room and went to my desk. Then he picked up one of the files.

"You've been working since this morning. Come on."

"Do you want to dig your own grave?"

I laughed.

"Don't be so dramatic."

He opened the file and pointed to one of the paragraphs.

"Do you even remember what this says?"

"Of course I know that."

"Okay. What does this sentence say?"

I looked down.

I stared at the words.

I could see them very clearly.

But somehow they didn't make any sense at all.

I groaned and pushed the papers aside.

"Okay. Maybe I really do need a break."

"Finally."

He grinned.

I reached for my handbag.

"Let's go before I change my mind."

As we left my office, my mobile phone vibrated in my handbag.

A smile immediately spread across my face when I saw who the message was from.

Hi my angel

How is your day going?

I hope you ate.

Don't overexert yourself.

Take care of yourself. I love you. ♡

Had I married the best man ever?

My life was so simple and beautiful. And this news was simply the icing on the cake.

Grinning, I leaned against the doorframe and answered.

Hey, my love. ♡

Work is stressful as always.

I'm on my way to the canteen for lunch.

You should take good care of yourself too.

And please eat something too. I love you too. ♡

My stomach fluttered with butterflies as I put my phone back in my handbag.

When I looked up, I noticed that Liam was looking at me.

I couldn't quite interpret his expression.

Sadness?

Fury?

I pushed the thought aside and smiled.

"Come on, let's go. I'm starving."

Most of our colleagues were already in the canteen.

I looked around for a free table and finally spotted one.

"There's someone! I'll reserve a table for us. You can get our food. The usual."

I was already halfway to our table when my vision suddenly blurred.

I felt dizzy and lost my balance.

I held my head and tried to grab hold of a nearby pillar.

But before I could reach her, I fell to the ground.

Through my blurred vision, I saw Liam running towards me.

Then everything went black.

I grimaced when I heard a steady beeping sound.

I slowly opened my eyes, but the light in the room was much too bright.

I blinked a few times and tried to get my bearings.

A hospital?

What had happened?

I looked towards the door and saw Adrian talking to the doctor there.

As soon as Adrian noticed that I was awake, he rushed to my side.

"Baby, how are you feeling?"

Relief and joy were written all over his eyes. His voice sounded almost excited.

“What’s going on? What happened?” I asked, frowning.

"You fainted at work. Liam called me and let me know, so I came here immediately," he explained.

Then his face suddenly took on a radiant expression.

"Angel, there's something else."

He paused briefly.

"You're pregnant. We're having a baby."

There was a clear note of excitement in his voice.

Tears filled my eyes.

I cried and smiled at the same time.

"It's really happening, honey."

The doctor came in at that exact moment.

"Sorry to bother you, but you can go home now. Please get more rest, avoid stress, take your supplements, and make sure you eat enough."

He continued talking for quite a while and gave us a lot of instructions.

I was only half-listening.

Lost in thought, I placed my hand on my stomach and gently stroked it.

We got a little Me and Adrian book.

Our own little miracle.

The most beautiful gift ever.

I was overjoyed.

Adrian helped me get ready so we could leave the hospital. Afterwards, he went out to pay the bill.

A knock on the door pulled me out of my thoughts.

"In."

Liam.

Oh… he was still here.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, concerned.

"Did you think you'd get rid of me that easily?" I teased him.

Then I smiled.

"Thank you so much, Liam. I thought you had already left."

"I just wanted to make sure you were okay," he said.

His eyes betrayed something that I couldn't quite understand.

“Thank you,” I said.

I smiled and stroked my stomach.

"I'm leaving now. And this time I'm leaving the hospital with an extra person."

Liam looked at me.

"Oh... wow. Congratulations, Eli."

His voice sounded happy.

But there was something else too.

Something I couldn't categorize.

Perhaps sadness.

"Then I'll go now. Take good care of yourself and call me if anything happens."

He hastily left the room.

I watched him go and frowned in confusion.

Liam had always been a bit strange.

I pushed the thought aside and changed my clothes again.

Adrian returned shortly afterwards.

We left the hospital together.

With a new member of our little family.

It was the happiest day of our lives.
